Building a better WA togetherSupporting a summer of celebration

Symphony in the City – enjoying the finest classical music under the stars.

Welcome

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to City of Perth Symphony in the City, an evening of beautiful music from your West Australian

Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

Under the baton of Richard Mills, the talent of the Orchestra will be showcased with music from the ballet, opera and concert stage. You’ll hear highlights from WASO’s exciting 2015 season, popular film music and solo performances from some of the wonderful musicians from the Orchestra.

Symphony in the City is a great way for WASO to celebrate with the people of Perth and Western Australia, the end of another successful year of music making. We are delighted to once again be able to share the concert with regional Western Australians thanks to a live broadcast and webcast.

Tonight, we also take the opportunity to thank and farewell Jan Stewart, who retires as CEO of Lotterywest this year. WASO is immensely grateful for the instrumental role Jan has played in championing community programs, and for setting an exceptional example for support and engagement with the arts. Thank you Jan. We hope you enjoy your next endeavour.

Each year, Symphony in the City is made possible by the generosity of two major sponsors: the City of Perth and Lotterywest. My sincere thanks go to both of these organisations for their continued support.

Thanks must also go to Wesfarmers, WASO’s Principal Partner, The West Australian, 720 ABC Perth and the Water Corporation, who provide the magnificent Sound Shell.

Enjoy the concert and best wishes for a safe and happy festive season.

The City of Perth Symphony in the City is an annual highlight for the people of Perth and visitors to our Capital City. It is an opportunity to enjoy the inspiring performances of

the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and the WASO Chorus under the stars.

Through the generous support and commitment of Lotterywest and West Australian Symphony Orchestra this partnership with the City of Perth continues to ensure the success of this event each year.

I would like to acknowledge the considerable contribution that Lotterywest CEO Jan Stewart has made to the delivery of community and arts programs in Western Australia. Jan’s leadership has been instrumental to the success and sustainability of the City of Perth Symphony in the City and the WASO Chorus. I wish Jan all the very best for the future after 22 years at the helm of Lotterywest.

This year we welcome Richard Mills back to the City of Perth and thank him for being with us this with us this evening. I also thank the many staff, artists and volunteers for their valuable contribution and for sharing their immense talents with us tonight.

Tonight’s concert program offers highlights from the WASO 2015 season, music from popular film scores and audience favourites including the much anticipated and explosive 1812 Overture.

The City is extremely proud to contribute to this major cultural celebration and on behalf of the City of Perth I hope you enjoy the concert and have a happy and safe festive season.

Welcome to the 2014 City of Perth Symphony in the City where we will once again experience the power and excitement of our very own West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Symphony

in the City has become a premier event in our City’s cultural calendar and gives us the opportunity to watch world class music in the beautiful surrounds of Langley Park.

Lotterywest is proud to support events like this that bring people West Australians together to connect and celebrate what is great about our State. We are very lucky to have such an exceptional State symphony and I’m so glad that the joy of their performances will be experienced by everyone, both here tonight at this free outdoor concert and through the live simulcasts to regional WA.

On behalf of everyone at Lotterywest and our Lotterywest retailers, I would like to thank WASO, the WASO Chorus and all the staff and the hundreds of volunteers for your contribution in making this unique event happen.

Now it’s time to sit back, relax and enjoy tonight’s wonderful show.
