Messages from the Board

President’s Message

The Saskatchewan Target Shooting Association hosted its Annual General Meeting and match at the Wascana Pistol Club in Regina on February 27. The event enticed a few new shooters to come out to try ISSF target shooting for the first time. I hope they’ll be back…and bring their friends!

As I mentioned in my last message, we need to continue growing the STSA membership. A great way to do this is through the new Associate membership, available to members of STSA affiliated clubs. Associate memberships cost $5 and have a significant benefit to target shooting, because membership numbers influence the amount of Sask Lotteries funding that we receive via Sask Sport. Associate memberships are an easy way to support your provincial organization and target shooting in Saskatchewan. If you have any questions regarding memberships, please ask us – every club and member helps us grow!

The recent Airgun Provincial Championships held in Saskatoon was a huge success, with 38 athletes participating in the 10m Air Rifle and Air Pistol events. We hope to see just as good of a turnout at Outdoor Provincials on July 1-3, 2016 in Prince Albert.

STSA learn-to-shoot clinics are available to any club interested in target shooting. If you would like to see target shooting kick-started in your community, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help you host a learn-to-shoot event.

Stay safe and good shooting.

Lowell Strauss, President

VP – High Performance

The STSA pistol and rifle team members attended a clinic in Prince Albert April 2nd. Coach Lisa Borgerson did some one on one coaching as well as three presentations on nutrient, mental preparedness, and stretching.

Still waiting to hear from SFC on time and location for Nationals in Pistol. Rifle Nationals will be in Cookstown, Ontario on July 29-August 7th. Once we have the notices we will post them to the website.

We are looking for coaches and officials from all the zones throughout the province to help get ready for the 2018 Sask Winter Games. Anyone who is certified please contact us. There are several clinics that are coming available in the fall we want to fill so let us know.

Several of our athletes are heading off to Germany to compete in the Junior World Cup this week. Randi Gyoerick, Julia Warren, and Jeremy Ruddick are travelling to Suhl, Germany representing Canada. We wish them well and good shooting.

Kerry Ruddick

UPCOMING CLINICS The STSA is hoping to host a few learn to shoot clinics over the summer and into the fall to help advance our sport and bring new shooters into the association. Plans are in the works to have a Learn to Shoot in Swift Current possibly May 14th or 15th. Details are TBA. More information to be posted to the website as it becomes available. If you want to host a clinic in your area, let us know.

As more information on coaching & officials clinics becomes available throughout the province and western Canada the STSA will be posting this online onto our website. We are in need of coaches and officials so please consider these volunteer positions as members of the STSA. Email us or check the website for more information.

Calling all Coaches – or ‘wanna’ be Coaches What is Respect in Sport? RiS is an on-line training program for coaches and sport leaders (officials). It is designed as a tool to assist in identifying and dealing with abuse, neglect, harassment, and bullying in sport. All sports organizations who receive funding from Sask Sport (like STSA) are required to have all coaches take this program; however, it is open to anyone who wishes to participate. Anyone wishing to become a rifle or pistol target shooting coach with the STSA must take this course to become certified as a coach or sport leader.

How do I take the course? It’s EASY! From the comfort of your own home, sit down at your computer and open a Google search and type in “Sask Sport Respect in Sport”. Once you navigate to the Sask Sport RiS page, the very first sentence has a link to a set of instructions.

Also on the main RiS page there are links to 3 different RiS courses. One is for hockey, one for gymnastics and one for all other sports. Please take the one for all other sports unless you also coach hockey or gymnastics (the courses are transferable between the sports but hockey and gymnastics have extra information).

Pick English or French, then click on “Register your profile” – the course will guide you through the rest. If you have any questions or concerns, there is access to a help desk via phone or email from the RiS home page.

The STSA RiS administrator will be provided notification that you have completed the course so there is no need to notify or send your certificate to anyone. Keep reading below if you would like more information!

Why is this being implemented? Sask Sport and STSA believe that we should be proactive in making sport in our Province as safe as possible and welcoming for all participants. Respect in Sport helps us promote those values through this simple and convenient on-line tool. It is being implemented to provide a better sport environment for all participants.

Why is RiS mandatory? Identifying and dealing with abuse, neglect, harassment and bullying in sport is very important and we believe ALL coaches and sport leaders must understand the fundamentals. In knowing that all of our coaches have had this essential training we will also be better prepared to mitigate liability both personal and organizational.

How is Respect in Sport implemented? Respect in Sport is presented as an online curriculum and includes audio/visual presentations, quizzes and printable handouts.

What equipment is required to take the Respect in Sport course? All that is required to complete the Respect in Sport curriculum is a Flash enabled computer, an Internet connection and speakers or a headset. Optional equipment includes a printer to print the handouts and/or your certificate of completion. If you need assistance accessing a computer, check with a family member or a friend. Most community libraries have computers available for the public to use.

As a coach I am being asked to do another course? RiS really is one of the most important courses you’ll take as a person who is responsible for teaching and training athletes. With this training you should feel more confident in dealing with issues relating to abuse, neglect, bullying and harassment and hopefully feel much more secure in this often overlooked area. This course will protect you and the athletes in your care and hopefully make you feel more comfortable in your leadership role.

How long is the course? It’s a total of three hours but its split into 6 simple half hour modules.

Do I have to do it all at once? The program allows you to complete a section within a module and knows where you left off in order to bring you back to that point when next you sign-in again.

What is the deadline? All existing coaches should have this course already. Anyone wishing to become a coach must take this course prior to being certified as a coach with the STSA. How much does it cost? It is free for users. Sask Sport Inc. & STSA believes so strongly in this program and the values it promotes, that the costs will be absorbed for all coaches and other sport leaders in our province.

Do I have to take the course every year? No. You take the 3-hour course in year one and you’ll get certified. In subsequent years you will be able to access the program as an on-line resource. If there becomes a major change or additions to the program in the future a refresher course may be required.

What are the benefits for a coach? • It will help you better understand the responsibilities, reward and respect that come with being a coach. • It will make you more confident in identifying and dealing with abuse, neglect, bullying and harassment. • It will help create a safer and more respectful environment for you, other coaches and the athletes in your care. • As a more knowledgeable coach, it will also better mitigate your own personal liability associated with this very volatile area within sport.

What if I coach more than one sport? RiS covers all sports within Saskatchewan and your certification is good across the board. You will only have to complete the course once. Inside the program on your profile page, you have the ability to add additional sports to your profile. This is an important step as it allows each PSGB you are involved with to access your certification details. Important Note for individuals involved with Hockey Saskatchewan and Gymnastics Canada If you are involved with Gymnastics Canada or Hockey Saskatchewan, you will access those specific versions of Respect in Sport. Sask Sport will still absorb the costs of the program and if you coach additional sports, you may “Port Your Certification” into the Sask Sport version of the program. See the HELP files to learn about Porting Your Certificate.

What happens if I don’t do the program? If you decide not to take the course, you will not be eligible to coach.

Why do I have to take this course if I am coaching adults? Values are values. Whether you are coaching youth or adults the issues of abuse, neglect, bullying and harassment are the same.
