Abstract It is relatively easy for humans to detect that the question they asked has not been answered – we teachthis skill to a computer. More specifically, we develop a measure that detects the avoidance, dodging orrejection of answering in a Q&A setup. Using a supervised machine learning framework, on a large trainingset of 37,512 classified answers, we identify 873 trigrams that signal that the respondent tries to avoid toanswer the question he was asked. We show that this dictionary has economic relevance by applying it to avalidation set of contemporaneous stock market reaction after earnings conference calls. Our finding showsthat obstructing the flow of information leads to significantly lower cumulative abnormal stock returns. Thisresult holds in the cross-section of earnings calls as well as in the within-management team variation. Ourmetric is designed to be of general applicability for Q&A situations, and hence, can be applied outside thecontextual domain of earnings conference calls.

Corporate Culture and Banking (joint with Andreas Barth)Revise & Resubmit in the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization

Abstract This paper empirically analyzes the role of corporate culture in banking. We define culture based on theCompeting Value Framework (Quinn and Rohrbaugh, 1983) and find that banks with a more pronouncedcompetition-oriented culture have stronger bonus-focused compensation schemes, while banks with a strongfocus on creativity show lower stock returns and higher bankruptcy risk. These findings suggest that riskmanagement practices are not merely driven by incentives from compensation schemes, but rather driven bydifferences in corporate culture.

How to talk down your stock returns (joint with Andreas Barth, Fabian Woebbeking, and SeverinZoergiebel)

Abstract We analyze two competing hypothesis of how markets interpret (lack of) factual terminology when seniormanagements’ verbally convey information in earnings calls. On the one hand, less jargon could reducecomplexity and thus increase the effectiveness of disclosing information in communicating. On the otherhand, markets could interpreted jargon-free language as the unwillingness to share factual information by‘beating around the bush,’ i.e. blathering. We find a strong positive impact of the usage of factual jargon onstock returns around an earnings call, supporting the Management Blathering Hypothesis: Firms experiencesignificantly lower cumulative abnormal returns following their earnings calls when managers blather more. This finding cannot be explained by time-constant firm characteristics or management style. Further, weinvestigate the motives behind blathering and observe that blathering is particularly pronounced when earningsmanagement is more likely, when analysts’ questions are tougher, and when last quarters’ return on equitywas poor.
