I would also like to thank CKNW Orphans’ Fund, the Vancouver Camping Bureau, the Burnaby Camping Bureau, the United Way of the Lower Mainland, the Government of BC and the Federal Government, and the many individuals who donated to “Send a Kid to Camp”. Your funding helped to support program costs and to make camp possible this year for children from families with limited resources. Without this type of assistance, program fees would rise above a manageable threshold for many families. Thanks as well to all of our staff and volunteers for making Sasamat Outdoor Centre a special place for each of our campers, and making my job so much fun. I look forward to working with each of you again in the coming year. We look forward to seeing all of our campers again next year. Your smiling faces and laughter are our greatest reward. -- G. Staff Welcome We wish to welcome Brandon McClounie as our Director of Community Programs. Brandon joins us with a twelve-year background as a staff member and director at camps across British Columbia and Ontario. A recent graduate of the University of Northern British Columbia, where he studied Geography and Resource & Recreational Based Tourism, Brandon and his wife Liz are expecting their first child in December. Brandon is also a board member for the British Columbia Camping Association and has been recognized for his work with in the Canadian Camping Association. We are excited to have Brandon on board and welcome him to the Sasamat family.

New Roofs This fall the Helm Lodge, along with Cottage D and the Maintenance Shop, received a facelift by getting new metal roofs. Placed on by Affiliated Roofers Inc. the finished product looks great. The lodge itself looks spectacular with a dark silver roof reflecting the natural environment. The new additions are another step in the long-term care and development of our site and facilities.

Summer Camp Reflections As the days become shorter, wetter, and colder; I grow fonder of those long hot summer days at Sasamat Outdoor Centre. Sasamat Camp 2009 was a busy 9 week summer filled with excitement. I still remember the campfires, cookouts, swim-times, camp-wide games and canoe races. I want to give a big thank you to all of the staff who worked long hours, making sure campers had a great experience. I am inspired by our staff who are caring and compassionate. The highlight of my summer is when Day Camp and Resident Camp worked together to produce amazing Carnivals (Special Events). In these Special Events, campers had the opportunity to get their face painted, ride the “scream machine” and of course…make ice cream floats. I can’t forget to send a special thanks to the dedicated volunteers for creating fantastic special events and helping new campers get through their first day of camp. Without volunteers, we couldn’t have pulled off such an extraordinary summer. Finally, many of the campers last summer went on wild adventures. I am especially impressed with our wilderness trippers, who spent 5 days on Stave Lake and 4-days on Granite Falls. Many campers experienced adventures in different ways; some campers went on a one night out-trip at Widgeon Creek and some slept away from home for the first time. So, thanks to everyone who made the summer of 2009 a great experience…the best summer yet!

NEW Challenge Courses in 2010

The Sky is the Limit Sasamat is excited to announce the installation of three high rope challenge courses set to open in summer 2010. The courses will include a climbing wall, vertical playground and six interconnected high rope elements. Campers, school groups and rentals of all ages will have the opportunity to play in this fun and safe climbing environment. Groups will be lead by a certified instructor through the age appropriate elements. All elements are team belayed which will keep non-climbers involved and active. Elements will not only challenge participants at their own accord but foster greater team building, communication and climbing skills. Keep an eye on our website for photos detailing the installation process and the inaugural climb. Starting in summer 2010 the sky is the limit at Sasamat Outdoor Centre.
