they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Dear Trojan Families and Friends, As the Advent Season begins, the Alliance for Catholic Education sent out its first
“Advent Reflections” series and focused on Hope. What a fitting theme for our school
considering our own ongoing theme of bravery in the face of change! Dr. Richard Boyatzis,
professor of Organizational Behavior at Case Western Reserve University, explains that hope is
the driver of change. When an individual, small group or organization has an ideal image
toward which they are working, three elements drive the realization of change: “ (1) an image of
a desired future; (2) hope that one can attain it; and (3) aspects of one’s core identity, which
includes enduring strengths” (Boyatzis, 2006, 613). My wish for us as a Catholic community is
that we may be a school of individuals with hope to bring during this Advent Season.
As the year progresses, I am especially hopeful because of my interactions with our
students and families. The school’s first “Pastries with the Principal,” held November 1, was a
success! Families joined together to share their homework woes and successes, and to encourage
each other regarding ways that families and the school could better work together to help our
students grow. We learned about resilience and grit, and even shared a few laughs! I think one
of the finest outcomes of the evening was learning that we are all not so different, even in terms
of homework. Thank you for attending and for being so open—what a great way to show the
union in our school!
I am hopeful, too, because of our parent volunteers. Thank you to Mrs. Cheryl Ross and
Mrs. Diane Clagg for helping to set-up and manage the Trojan Book Fair! With their help and
with an outstanding turnout, the school was just shy of the $3,000 goal! THANK YOU
PARENTS AND STUDENTS!
As we enter Advent, I look back on November with much thanks, as well. With the help
of our school’s parents, Mrs. Huss and our Pre-Schoolers prepared a feast for our youngest
learners! As an honored guest, I can attest to the delicious treats, copious amounts of turkey,
mashed potatoes, and mac and cheese. What a feast ! Thank you to Mrs. Huss and to all of our
parents for helping make this learning experience so special for our school.
A special thanks to Mrs. Pogorelc, for launching and managing the school’s
Thanksgiving food drive benefiting the needy right here in our community through the St.
Vincent de Paul Society. Thank you to all families and parents for their time and efforts in
making this year’s food drive a success!
This last month has also brought new faces to St. Anthony’s. Please help me in
welcoming Mrs. Barbara Hunt, the school’s afternoon activities manager, and Ms. Jenna Hall,
lunchroom and recess monitor. You’ll see that Mrs. Hunt has included some information
regarding lunchroom rules in this month’s newsletter.
I send you, the families, friends, and students of St. Anthony School many blessings for
the holiday season. I pray that we may all find hope in the chaos that is sometimes life, and
kindness and patience for one another, especially around the holidays.

Buon Natale, Feliz Navidad, Joyeux Noël, Feliz Natal, Felicem Natalem Christi --Merry Christmas!
Mrs. Lucia Heddleson
The Pre-School class is celebrating
Thanksgiving and preparing for Christmas
with love in their hearts! The students wrote
journal pages about what they are thankful
for during this holiday season, including
Jesus, St. Anthony of Padua School, family,
pets, friends, good food and warm beds! In
the spirit of the First Thanksgiving, each
student brought something to share with
their friends to the Pre-School Thanksgiving
Feast! We said prayers of thanks for
everything good in our lives and shared a
delicious meal together!
Best of the Month in Pre-School & Kindergarten
Pre-School learns all about being Thankful & Giving!
Kindergarten gives back The Kindergarten children took on the task
of providing the homeless women and
children of Lorain with socks for the coming
cold, wet winter. We were inspired by a
video of a young man who calls himself
“Kid President”. He is funny yet very
serious and after watching him we decided
to participate in the socktober movement!
Our campaign was very successful as we
collected over 500 pairs of socks!!! We
donated them to the Haven Emergency
Homeless Center for women and children in
Lorain. The director was very appreciative
and we recently received a heartfelt thank
you from some of the residents. Good job,
Kinders!!
After learning about St. Nicholas, the Pre-School class
prepared the St. Anthony of Padua Parish Giving Trees as a
service project for our community. The students decorated
the Giving Trees with “angel ornaments” from Lorain
County Birthright that have gift requests for babies in need
this holiday season. Our class raised donations to purchase
some of these much needed gifts, wrapped them in class and
put them under the Giving Tree in the school vestibule! The
students are excited to live in the way of St. Nicholas and
help others prepare for Christmas! They have truly
embraced the joy of giving and sharing! We thank you for
your support and generosity! May God bless us all this
holiday season!

We have been learning about animal habitats. Habitats are homes for plants and animals where an animal
can find food, water, and shelter. We have also marveled at God’s amazing creation and how He created so
many animals that adapt to the many different environments.
2nd Grade has “Snow Much Fun” Second graders are busy making an acrostic poem with the word
SNOWMAN. We are thinking "cool" and coming up with
phrases that remind us of the snow and winter fun that is ahead
of us, especially with the snow that we saw this past week.
Next, we will be busy making a snowman drawing to go with
our poem.
Best of the Month in Primary – Grades 1 & 2
1st Graders learn all about Habitats!
3rd Grade becomes builders The 3rd grade worked on designing and then building the tallest freestanding towers they could. They were
only able to use spaghetti noodles and marshmallows. After, time was finished the structures were measured
and they discussed what helped the tallest structures stay standing. Students reflected on what went well and
what they would change to give their tower more stability.
Best of the Month in Middle School – Grades 3 & 4
4th Grade becomes Poets The 4th grade class studied poetry in Reading. Each student wrote a Haiku following the very specific
guidelines that are necessary to make their poem a Haiku. The assignment required them to write a 3 lined
poem where the first line had 5 syllables, the second line had 7 syllables, and the third line had 5 syllables.
Their Haiku also had to be about any aspect of nature and include a either a simile or a metaphor. Before
turning in their first draft, the Haiku had to be checked by a classmate, making sure all of the necessary
criteria were met. The final draft had to be glued onto a piece of construction paper with a picture
representing their topic.
5th Grade writes Bio Poems
For a book report during November, the fifth graders
read biographies and wrote a bio poem about what
they learned. They followed a format which allowed
them to express their ideas in a creative non-rhyming
poem.
Below are some examples of their hard work:

6th Grade continues
to travel the World! 6th Grade’s World Tour continues as we study
the countries of Western Europe. Each student
created a mobile that displayed the flag and fun
facts about a Western European country of
their choice. The students showed off their
artistic talent and knowledge of their country as
they shared their fascinating facts with the
class.
7th Grade learns about
God’s Spokeman The 7th grade has been working very hard in all of their
subjects. In Religion class, we have been learning about God’s
Spokesman, the Prophets and how they foretold the future.
8th Grade learns how to be
Good Researchers The 8th students have been working hard
researching all of the specific content from varied
reputable sources for science fair in Language Arts!
Prior to this, they studied plagiarism and the
importance of giving credit to sources as well as
learning and understanding from the content that
they research! This is a cross curricular assignment
as they get graded for both their Science Fair essay
in Language Arts as well as their content for the
project in Science. The students have really been
working hard and we cannot wait to see what they
come up with!

Best of the Month in Spanish In Spanish, during November, the middle school children have begun to learn about verb conjugation and,
along with the intermediate grades, he subjective articles. The primary grades and pre-school children
continue to work on learning the Spanish alphabet and the sounds that each letter makes. All of the
children have been learning the Mexican folk song De Colores.
Mr. Shaffer’s Art Class makes Turkeys! My favorite project we worked on in November is definitely the Thanksgiving turkey project! I wanted
the students to do something cute and different, and not the traditional “trace your hand” turkey art. They
were urged to use basic shapes like circles, rectangles, and triangles to form the basic concept of their
turkey. We outlined them in black Sharpie markers, and then used watercolor paints to fill them in. Here
are some examples. I was very surprised by the uniqueness and quality of the turkeys everyone produced.
I’m looking forward to showing off our Christmas and winter projects! Hope everyone had a great month!
Here is a picture of Miss Guenther’s 3rd grade class learning about the articles
from a YouTube video featuring Señor Jordan and Lucas.
