1st annual team Sarcoma 5k run/Walk and 4th annual Sarcoma Picnic

What a gorgeous day at Saratoga State Park. The inaugural event was an overwhelming success on many levels:

• 300 participants and volunteers

• $12,000 raised for sarcoma research

Funds were donated to the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative, whose founders, Bruce and Beverly Shriver, joined us for the day’s events.

The Times Union featured a blog post of the event as well as CBS 6 Albany and Time Warner Cable News aired coverage of the event to help increase awareness of sarcoma in our community.

Saratoga Springs Mayor Joanne Yepsen attended the event, addressing and inspiring the crowd.

The event was followed by our 4th Sarcoma Awareness Picnic with patients, their families and friends gathering at the warming hut to share stories, enjoy a meal, relax and soak up the incredible weather and energy of the day.

William Fisher enneking, m.D.May 9, 1926 – July 17, 2014

Pioneer of surgical science, beloved physician, curious explorer, mentor to all, educator, fisherman, friend, and family man, Dr. Enneking was respected and admired by doctors all over the world.

MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

• Started the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at the University of Florida in the 1960s

• Renowned expert and father of orthopaedic oncology

• Guided generations of orthopaedic surgeons with his wisdom and warmth

• Developed the staging system for bone and soft tissue tumors used by physicians worldwide to communicate more effectively about patients and outcomes; the system carries his name, the Enneking Staging System

• Established a course in musculoskeletal pathology at the University of Florida over 45 years ago, which was attended by physicians from around the globe

• Published scientific manuscripts over a span of seven decades

• Helped found the International Society of Limb Salvage

• Served as president of every major orthopaedic organization at some point during his career
