CLIFTON PARK Ever since theShenendehowa High School foot-

ball team lost to Shaker in theplayoffs last year, then-juniorquarterback Ryan Van Galen wason a mission to be the best quar-terback in Section II, accordingto head coach Brian Clawson.

In his senior campaign, notonly was Van Galen the best quar-terback in the section, he had themost distinguished season as asignal caller in Plainsmen history.

The 6-foot-2 gunslinger setthe Shen single-season recordfor passing touchdowns (23) and

passing yards (2,137) both topsin the Capital Region en routeto leading Shen to its first Sec-tion II Class AA championshipsince 2011.

For his performance this fall,Van Galen was chosen as TheSaratogians Offensive Player ofthe Year.

Ryan is a dream to have as aquarterback. Hes a senior andhes graduating but I wish he wasa sophomore, Clawson said. He

worked at it and he didnt reallycare about his statistics, he just

wanted to lead the team to v ic-tory every week so that says a lotabout his character.

CLIFTON PARK The adage insports is that defense wins cham-pionships.

The Shenendehowa HighSchool football team displayeda dominant defense this fall enroute to a Section II Class AAchampionship, and linebacker Ol-iver Robinson is a big reason why.

The 5-foot-9 senior produced ateam-high 100 tackles, includingthree sacks, on a unit that alloweda mere 47 points in seven regularseason games.

On top of that, Robinson calledall the defensive signals for the

Plainsmen and was an extremelyreliable asset in the middle ofShens D.

For his performance this sea-son, Robinson was chosen as TheSaratogians Defensive Player ofthe Year.

Oliver was the rock that heldthe defense together, Shen headcoach Brian Clawson said. Hesa freak of nature, hes extremelystrong and hes bright. I feel thathas was our most valuable playeron defense this year.

With 1:47 remaining in theClass AA Super Bowl, CBAs of-fense had the ball on its own33-yard line looking to mount agame-winning drive.

While the Buffalo Bills 2014season has been full of ups anddowns, one thing remains con-stant every other Sunday nightthere will be a new 26 Shirts Buf-

falo sports themed t-shirt madesolely to benefit those in need.

I like the concept of 26 Shirtsbecause its a litt le more per-sonal, 26 Shirts customer andUAlbany senior Max Schwartz-

berg said. When you donate toa charity you dont really know

where the moneys going, its just

going to a place. With this you seethe people its going to and its afamily, or something like that. 26Shirts creates a much better con-nection I think.

26 Shirts is a social good proj-ect created by Bills Mafia co-founder Del Reid which creates aBuffalo sports themed shirt ev-ery two weeks. Each t-shirt is de-signed with a specific Buffalo Billsor Sabres player in mind and stayson sale for two weeks. At the end

of those two weeks, the t-shirt isretired and never sold again.

But the best part about eachshirt? 26 Shirts and Reid do notprofit from a single shirt they sell, and eight dollars of every shirtsold goes directly to the shirtsspecific beneficiary.

The whole motivation behind26 Shirts is to channel peoplespassion they have for sports intosomething productive in the com-munity, Reid said. Thats the

whole goal. While Reid doesnt fiscally ben-

efit from his endeavors with 26Shirts, the feeling he gets fromhelping out those in need is morethan enough.

When you get to meet a familymember and you get to actuallymeet that person whos so grate-ful because you made a t-shirt andsold it and gave them the money theres nothing like that, said

occurred in the Class AASuper Bowl against CBA,

when he orchestrated thegame-winning, 71-yarddrive capped off by a MattTaft touchdown run with1:47 to lift Shen to thechampionship.

When I threw that pickto give CBA the ball backI thought our season wasover, but everyone got be-hind me and said were go-ing to get another opportu-nity, Van Galen said. Wecame down on that lastdrive, punched it in and

won the section title.Van Galen, a two-yearvarsity player, did not riseto stardom by accident. He

was diligent in terms of hispreparation, lifting threetimes a week and engag-ing in four film sessionsper week.

Ive never really sat aplayer down and game-planned with him for anopponent, but (Van Galen)

was so smart and he pre-pared so well, we would sitdown twice a week and goover the passing gameplanfor our opponent, Clawsonsaid. I think the open com-munication line that Ryanand I had was great and tohave him prepare like thatreally sets him apart.

Even before the seasonstarted, Van Galen and histeammates possessed greatchemistry in the passinggame after competing inthe 7-on-7 tournament inHoover, A la.

    Down at Alabama there

were a lot stronger kidsand they jammed, so ourreceivers had to time theirroutes a lot better and Ihad to get it out quicker, said Van Galen, who set thesingle-game passing recordon Sept. 26 with 338 yardsagainst Saratoga. Going

into the season we werevery, very confident in ourpassing game. Our prepa-ration was amazing and itdefinitely paid off.

The last play of Van Ga-lens high school careerended with a sack on ado-or-die two-point con-

Al though the sen iordidnt achieve his ultimategoal of playing in the statechampionship game, VanGalen, who plans to com-pete collegiately next sea-son, will look back at hissenior campaign with asmile.

11 and 1, dont get me

wrong its a great recordbut our goal was to be inthe state championship butunfortunately we came upshort, he said. All of us

were sad after the gamebut its been a great runand as a whole we had anexcellent season.

CLIFTON PARK With a deep, distinctvoice that could project all the way fromShenendehowa High Schools lobby to thelocker room, Plainsmen football coachBrian Clawsons presence is always felt.

This past fall, Clawsons impact was feltin more ways than one.

The third-year head coach guided thePlainsmen to an undefeated regular sea-son record, its first Section II Class AAchampionship since 2011 and a state semi-final appearance.

For his efforts this season, Clawson was

selected as The Saratogian Coach of theYear.Im in a great situation here. To be able

to have a great staff, great administratorsand the kids are amazing. Theyre verysmart, theyre very committed year-roundto making themselves better, Clawsonsaid. We had a great team this year and it

was nice to see everything come together.Clawson coached a Shen offense that

accumulated more than 2,500 rushingyards and 2,100 passing yards. In addi-tion, the Plainsmens defense held theopposition to less than seven points pergame during the regular season, makingfor an extremely balanced swuad on bothsides of the ball.

To be able to have Mark McQuaid, JimWard and Ryan Fenton... weve knowneach other a long time and we were assis-tants growing together through the sys-tem before I became head coach, Claw-son said. Theyre extremely loyal to theexponential degree and I know I can trustthem. They put in the time, they havegreat rapport with the kids and theyreknowledgeable.

According to senior co-captain OliverRobinson, Clawsons burning desire towin rubbed off on the entire Plainsmenteam this season.

Hes very passionate about the game,Robinson said. Hes really into it, hes aleader and he pushes us to get better. Healways puts us in a position to win and

you can see he puts his heart into every-thing he does. Hes a great coach.

But Shens defense, justas it had all season, cameup with a huge stand andforced a turnover with 34seconds left to seal Shensfirst Super Bowl title since2011.

Us making a stop on thegame-winning drive, forc-ing a turnover and givingour offense the ball back

    was definitely the high-

light of the season, Rob-inson said. We came to-gether as a team and we

just got it done.Other than being phys-

ically gifted, Robinson, aco-captain and three-year

varsity player, was proba-bly the smartest linebackerweve ever had, accordingto Clawson.

In fact, in some in-stances, Robinson knew

the opposing offenses playbefore the ball was evensnapped.

With his film study,he could sometimes callout different plays the op-ponent was going to run

based on their formation,Clawson said. He was theone who made the adjust-ments and he would cancelus out of blitzes if he hadto. To be able to combineintelligence with powerand speed makes for a

very good football playerand the intangibles Oliver

brings to the table as far asleadership and the respectfrom his teammates justmade him outstanding.

While Robinsons pri-mary role was being arun-stopper for the Plains-men, he exhibited notice-able improvement in passcoverage this fall due inlarge part to his offseasonexperience competing inthe 7-on-7 tournament in

Hoover, Ala.Hes going down to Al-

abama and matching upagainst these 6-foot-4 tightends and slot receivers andhe held his own, Clawsonsaid. He was very goodat defending the pass this

year and that facet alonemade him the completelinebacker that he was.Hes physical at the lineof scrimmage, hes goingto get that jam on the re-ceiver and if he crosses themiddle, (Robinsons) goingto hit him.

The humble Robinson, who is undecided on wherehell play collegiate footballnext year, lauded his defen-sive line for his success thisfall.

We had a great defen-sive line this year, he said.Just them being a forceand having great playersat those positions makes iteasy as a linebacker to justmake plays.
