FOREWORD
It has become a tradition that researchers who are working with saproxylic beetles meet every two to three years. The first symposium was held in Sweden in August 1999, the second took place in Great Britain three years later in June2002, the third was held in Latvia in June 2004, the fourth took place in France in June 2006, the fifth in Germany in June2008 and the sixth in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in the University of Ljubljana, Biotechnical Faculty, Department of Forestry and Renewable Forest Resources, from 15 to 17 June, 2010.
Forty-six contributions on the topic of saproxylic beetles in Europe and in Slovenia were presented (Sections: Red Listing and Monitoring, Population Studies, Saproxylic Beetle Assemblages and Environmental Gradients, Taxonomy and Phylogeography, Saproxylic Beetles and Forestry). The conference was well attended (more than 100 participants) and accomplished its goals: to present the state of the art on research concerning saproxylic organisms (primarily saproxylic beetles), alongside research dealing with transversal approaches related the environmental problems faced by different ecosystems, factors affecting the biodiversity of saproxylic beetles, phylogeography, taxonomy of saproxylic species, conservation and the management of saproxylic beetles, and to develop stronger cooperation and promote a saproxylic organism research network between different researchers around the world.
The organizers of the sixth conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia have summarised the results in comprehensive proceedings of eleven peer-reviewed contributions; special attention is dedicated to methodological insights important for the conservation of saproxylic beetles (as the IUCN European Red List of Saproxylic Beetles, working towards a European Saproxylic Beetle Conservation Strategy), biology (as fungivory of saproxylic Coleoptera), new knowledge of saproxylic beetle behaviour and management in protected forests (reserves, Natura 2000 areas and other) and in managed forests.
