SOLUTION DESCRIPTION
Connected Transportation Safety
Problem :
Transportation safety is a major global issue. Every year more than one million people die on the
roads, making road traffic incidents one of the top 10 causes of death around the world. According to
the World Health Organization, traffic injuries are also the leading cause of death among young
people aged between 15 and 29 years, and cost governments approximately 3% of GDP. Safe and
efficient transportation is the backbone of our society and the global economy. Ensuring roads and
highways are accident-free serves the best interests of a sustainable world.

SOLUTION DESCRIPTION
Connected Transportation Safety
Solution :
Although road traffic injuries have been a leading cause of mortality for many years, a substantial
portion of the crashes are both predictable and preventable. NTT and SAP collaborated to develop an
IoT solution - Connected Transportation Safety, aiming to provide more accurate and real-time
information about vehicles’ and drivers’ conditions. In Connected Transportation Safety, we integrate
SAP Cloud Platform with NTT Internet of Things analytics platform and NTT’s hitoe®, which is a smart
shirt capable of measuring biomedical signals. Based on the collected data, which includes GPS
location, driver’s posture and driver’s biological data, we can provide a comprehensive safety analysis
and detect safety threats in real time. By reducing the accidents caused by driver fatigue and
abnormal driving behavior, this solution can provide benefits for all parties.

Connected Transportation Safety
Customer Story :
Keifuku Bus Company is located in Fukui, Japan and has approximately 300 employees and 200
buses. The company aims to speed up its digital transformation, and hopes to monitor the status of
all drivers and buses to ensure transportation safety. It began to pilot Connected Transportation
Safety system since October 2016. During the pilot, over a dozen of drivers took on the shirt and
drove more than 50 shifts. The data are collected and analyzed by CTS system in real time, and fleet
manager could monitor the health condition of each driver. The pilot turned out to be a great success
as it demonstrated how SAP system and cutting-edge IoT technology can be combined to reduce
traffic injuries and fatalities.

QUOTE FROM STAKEHOLDER
STAKEHOLDER QUOTE
Sachihiro Amaya, president of Keifuku Bus Company, “This project makes it possible to monitor a
driver’s conditions continuously in real time. Thanks to making good use of this data, we can catch
the drivers’ unusual movements when he is driving and an abnormality occurs. We expect that this
will help us make the vehicle stop safely.”
Jun Sawada, senior EVP, CFO/CIO/CCO, NTT Group CEO, NTT Security, *“NTT wants to contribute
to business transformation for its enterprise customers by providing quality, value-added services
with partners. A global partnership with SAP is a significant step to strengthen our competitive edge.
This partnership will help NTT enhance capabilities to support our global clients, and can accelerate
digital transformation of industries.”

BUSINESS CHALLENGES
BUSINESS CHALLENGES
Connected Transportation Safety
In a report from U.S. Department of Transportation, we find that human error comprises 94 percent
of the vehicle crashes at the national level in the year of 2015. According to the Saudi traffic police
report (Ministry of Interior, 2013), 91% of all accidents involved human factors, 7% accounted for
vehicle factors, and 2% were associated with road environments. It is obvious that if we can
strengthen the least reliable part of the system, the driver, we can make significant improvement in
transportation safety.
In order to provide a comprehensive and real time monitoring on driver’s status. We need to capture
the precise bio signals from the heart and muscles of the driver without disturbing his delivery work.
No delay should occur during data transmission. Furthermore, specialized and accurate algorithms
are required to handle the multidimensional data efficiently.

HUMAN EMPOWERMENT
HUMAN EMPOWERMENT
Connected Transportation Safety, serving as a perfect monitoring tool for the manager level, can provide
comprehensive safety analysis for fleet manager and detect safety threats before accidents occur.
A safer and efficient transportation system can improve the quality of people’s lives and lower
household expenses resulted from traffic injuries and fatalities.
As a strong support for drivers, Connected Transportation Safety combines the predictive capabilities
of SAP Cloud Platform with NTT’s IoT analytics for hitoe, to detect driver fatigue, stress level and
abnormal driving behavior in real time. Once threats occur, the system will radio the drivers and alert
them on mobile device.

BUSINESS / SOCIAL VALUE
BUSINESS AND SOCIAL VALUE
Social Value:
Traffic accidents impose intangible and financial costs to society. These costs include reduced quality
of life, reduced productivity, medical and other resource costs. According to a report from New
Zealand Government, “social cost of road crashes and injuries 2015 update”, in per-crash terms, the
updated average social cost is estimated at $4,709,000 per fatal crash, $900,000 per reported
serious crash and $ 95,000 per reported minor crash. By improving transportation safety, we hope to
save people’s lives and lower social cost of road injuries.

Project Reputation:
Connected Transportation Safety showcase has been demonstrated to many global leaders and
enterprises in a lot of high-profile events in 2016 such as Guiyang Big Data Expo, SAP IoT Summit in
Beijing and Tokyo, World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, Huawei HCC, and was reported on various
newspapers, televisions and web portals. The demo was also showed to Chancellor of Germany
Angela Merkel during her visit in Shenyang, China on June 14th, 2016. For the coming 2017, as a
candidate showcase, CTS will be introduced to more people in the Mobile World Congress in
Barcelona and CeBIT in Hannover. Furthermore, the government of Abu Dhabi is also considering
piloting CTS to ensure school bus safety. These events not only exhibit the companies’ strong
technology foundation and social responsibility, but also demonstrate how the cutting-edge IoT
technology can be utilized to save people’s lives.
