„Santara“ Valley experience in new health technologies

„Santara“ Valley • Integrated scientific and business center was established in
2008. It will be finished by the end of 2013.
• Main objectives are: biotechnology, molecular medicine, innovative medical technologies, ecosystem and information, communication technologies.
• Goal is: to reach global level in biotechnology, bio pharmacy and IT sectors.
• It is planed to create 1200 new work places.
• 5 times growth in biotechnology and bio pharmacy generated GDP (approx. up to 0,5% of GDP per year).

– 2 GMP-compliant pharmaceuticals plants

• Biotechpharma R&D and Production plant,

• Baltic Solar Energy plant
• Valleys’ monitoring group is composed from Lithuanian and foreign experts.
• 100 mln. EUR were invested in “Santara” valley
• Several R&D sectors are going to be developed:
• biotechnology,
• bio pharmacy,
• innovative medicine technologies,
• molecular medicine,
• solar batteries and IT technologies

Biotechnologies • Sicor Biotech and Biotechpharma both biopharmaceuticals developers and
producers are members of „Santara“ Valley
• New biopharmaceutical for hepatitis C is being developed and produced in Biotechpharma
• Monoclonal antibodies used for different purposes are in stage of development
• Bio similars are developed and produced. Sicor biotech has developed and is producing GCSF, which has passed EMA and FDA audits

Innovative Medicine center • New research and development center for
innovative medicine and biopharmasy is being built in „Santara“ Valley.
• 7000 sq. m. for different purposes laboratories and “Open” laboratories.
• Laboratories for research:
• immunotechnology,
• biopharmaceutical processes,
• biomedical information and visualization algorithms,
• innovative medical technologies,
• bio models,
• stem cells.

Medicine • Vilnius University hospital Santariškių Klinikos is a hospital constantly
investing in innovative medicine technologies
• Development of :
• Medical imaging
• Health system online – E-HEALTH
• Molecular diagnostics
• Personalised medicine
• Minimal invasion technologies
• Clinical research infrastructure

• MOOG Medical Devices a member of „Santara“ valley
• Development of medical technologies
• Research for new technologies
• Producing innovative injection medical devices

Results • “Santara” valley is developing according to the program:
– there are well established scientific centers,
– established new biotechnology company “Biotechpharma”,
– MOOG medical devices invested in their research and development center,
– Vilniaus Universiteto Sanatarškių klinikos are establishing new centers and providing new innovative medicine services.

Results • Innovative product development and scientific research is being promoted
by combining private and public entities.
• In 2011 0,3% of GDP was generated by biotech and bio pharmacy companies – 3 times increase since 2009.
• Global investors identify “Santara” Valley as a Innovation Hub of Northern Europe.
• Global companies are investing in infrastructure or outsourcing their R&D and other biotech services.
