◦The people of the Texas panhandle and the Great Plains would trade buffalo meat and products of the buffalo with the Pueblos of New Mexico for agricultural products such as beans, corn, and squash which led most traders.

◦In 1846, the Mexican-American War began. The Army of the West followed the Santa Fe Trail to invade New Mexico.

◦. The Trail opened in 1821, the year Mexico gained its independence from Spain. A decade later, the Trail had two main routes: the Mountain Fork, which went through Colorado, and the Cimarron Fork, which went through Kansas.
