A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR OF SANTA FE

Late in October, I had the honor of gathering for a dinner with the vibrant and growing

arts community here in Santa Fe and awarding six truly special Santa Fe artists and art

advocates with the Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts.

This award not only recognizes outstanding achievement in the arts, but it also

highlights the central role the arts play in our cultural and community success.

Arts, culture, and creativity are key components of Santa Fe’s past; they are an even

bigger part of our future. We are home to an arts community that is unique in history,

size, and range. Our job is to preserve its authenticity while taking the arts to the next

level in a way that is sustainable and meaningful to everybody.

From film to sculpture, painting to theatre, Santa Fe’s arts community is world-

renowned, and deservedly so. I couldn’t be prouder of our artists and the foundational

attraction they have for visitors to Santa Fe, and that’s why I’m working on four major

policy initiatives to keep the arts in Santa Fe growing as we go.

We can and must do more to engage young people in the arts and share the benefits

of our community’s cultural resources with young people; develop strategies that

advance our community’s cultural assets for long-term viability; sustain spaces

throughout our community that promote dialogue and artistic exchange; and provide

all Santa Feans, and all visitors to Santa Fe, with access to and participation in the

creative life of our community.

We’re excited about making sure the arts in Santa Fe remain a pillar of our community

and our culture, and I am proud to work with our artists and arts advocates to do

everything I can as mayor to keep our culture strong.

Santa FeTHE CITY DIFFERENT

Santa Fe is truly a winning destination for our millions of visitors. Last month, Conde Nast

Traveler Readers Choice scored the city as the sixth best destination in the entire world—

ahead of the likes of Paris, Rome, and Prague.

This year we’ve also received several first place awards and a slew of top ten finishes

in other polls for best art, cuisine, culture, lodging, wellness, shopping, outdoors, and

friendliest and best overall destination. Both Money magazine and Kiplinger’s named

Santa Fe a top place to retire, while TripAdvisor cited us as one of the top U.S. vacation

rental markets. Meanwhile, our media coverage has doubled from 2014, which itself was a

record-setting year.

The range of these designations is proof we are “The City Different,” with a blend of

cultures that includes over 400 restaurants, 250 art galleries, 14 museums, and some of

the continent’s most dramatic outdoor recreation and adventure: mountain biking, golf,

fishing, skiing, hiking, and stargazing.

People ask what time is best to visit Santa Fe? Any time is the best time! This holiday

season there are many new and special things to see and do, and our santafe.org website

offers a calendar with descriptions of them all.

In March, we’re highlighting family activities — many hotels, restaurants, galleries, shops,

museums, adventure operators, and spas will offer special free kids opportunities with

adult participation.

Opportunities for Santa Fe adventure change just as the leaves turn color, the ski basin

gets a fresh layer of powder, the colors explode in the spring, and festivals burst on the

scene throughout summer. As Conde Nast Traveler readers and so many others have

declared, Santa Fe has it all — and in the best quality you can find.

Aheartfelt thank you to Sotheby’s Santa Fe Style for the opportunity to regularly share the work that

Creative Santa Fe does for our community. Enthusiastically dedicated to building lasting partnerships with residents, other nonprofits, and both private and public sectors, Creative Santa Fe leverages the work we do locally by engaging closely with other like-minded organizations across the country.

We continue our focus on attracting and retaining a younger demographic to Santa Fe. Creative Santa Fe is working closely with the City of Santa Fe and other community partners to actively develop new assets in our city that will attract new businesses and residents. Two major Creative Santa Fe initiatives that will make a lasting impact on our city are The Santa Fe Arts + Creativity Center and Startup Santa Fe.

The Santa Fe Arts + Creativity Center is envisioned as affordable live/work/creation space where Santa Fe’s creative workforce can develop individual and collaborative projects and learn

GROWING STRONG IN SANTA FE

entrepreneurial skills as they transition from training to independence in the art markets. This center addresses one of our city’s most pressing needs, the shortage of affordable housing that stands as a barrier to attracting and retaining young talent. We are thrilled to announce that Creative Santa Fe recently received a prestigious $150,000 National Endowment for the Arts matching grant to continue our work to make the Santa Fe Arts + Creativity Center a reality. The NEA received 275 applications and awarded only 69 grants nationwide. We are honored to be a part of this select group of grantees. This grant builds on our local momentum while drawing national attention and new funding resources to Santa Fe.

Startup Santa Fe’s goal is to help rebrand the city’s economic development efforts and to focus on expanding the economy for businesses and startups. This month we launched startupsantafe.com, a web portal where entrepreneurs can find everything they need at their fingertips, allowing them to learn, collaborate, launch innovations, and ultimately build strong businesses that become economic mainstays in the community. Formed in partnership with the City of Santa Fe, this new website portal includes a Resources Guide highlighting all of the resources available to launch businesses and support entrepreneurs in New Mexico as well as articles and the latest news.

Startup Santa Fe’s team of entrepreneurs also hosts regular informal discussion and networking events and offers free consultations with experts. A calendar of events lists these as well as related events hosted by other organizations throughout the region.

As Mayor Javier Gonzales said, “Startup Santa Fe is generating real energy and excitement and connecting Santa Fe startups to some of the most innovative entrepreneurs in the world. They’re bringing businesses together, and anytime you can do that you’re going to give yourself a real chance to grow the economy and create the space necessary for positive change.”

With the support of the City of Santa Fe, partnerships with extraordinary local nonprofits, businesses such as Sotheby’s International Realty, and citizens just like you, we are making a difference. Together, we can build on our assets, strengthen our economy, and attract and retain creative individuals and businesses to ensure Santa Fe’s sustainability and vibrancy for years to come.

WINTER/SPRING 2015–16 • VOL. 5, ISSUE 2

SANTAFEstyleTM

Sotheby’s International Realty is the leading Santa Fe real estate firm in both

listings and sales of residential properties, and I am pleased to report that our

brokers continue to lead our market recovery. Having represented buyers from

more than 80 cities in 30 states and five countries and territories so far this year,

our firm covers a broad spectrum of the market — particularly the luxury segment,

where we continue to hold a market share of greater than 50 percent.

According to the Santa Fe Association of Realtors MLS, so far this year, sales in

the $1,000,000–$2,000,000 price range have increased more than 14 percent

— a welcome sign for the local market. In addition, the recent sales of two trophy

properties — Forked Lightning Ranch, formerly owned by Jane Fonda and listed

at $19.5 million (Tim Van Camp and Ray Rush of Sotheby’s International Realty

represented the buyers) and the undeveloped portion of Monte Sereno (sold to

a Santa Fe partnership by Paul McDonald of Sotheby’s International Realty) —

emphasize improvements in the luxury market.

Has this increase in sales in the high-end sector altered the way buyers define

luxury? How is luxury defined in the post-recession market? Has the definition

changed? Luxury can be an elusive concept — each of us identifies it differently. Is

it a 5,000-square-foot residence in Las Campanas? Or is it a comfortable, though

smaller, home with a garden on the Eastside? Or a home with views in the Summit

or Tesuque? Is luxury simply the ability to say yes or no? However one defines

luxury, it is a catchword for selectiveness, a concept focused on details — quality,

texture, location, and lifestyle.

The properties featured in this issue — and online at sothebyshomes.com/santafe

— represent a wide range of tastes. We hope they will appeal to your own sense of

luxury — no matter the price range, no matter the size or location.

Sincerely,

GREGG ANTONSEN

SECLUDED EASTSIDE COMPOUNDmls: 201504936 | $2,900,000

A secluded Santa Fe treasure, this captivating gated estate includes three historically and artistically significant structures — the former home and studio of Willard Nash, a member of the Los Cinco Pintores school of painters, and the onetime studio of renowned sculptress Glenna Goodacre. The buildings have been refurbished, updated, and transformed into a spectacular three-bedroom main residence, a smaller two-bedroom residence, and a charming guest or caretaker’s house, which together would make an ideal private compound.
