THE SCOTTISH RITE CREED Human Progress is our cause, the enfranchisement of human thought our supreme wish, the freedom of human conscience our mission, and the guarantee of equal rights to all people everywhere, the end of our contention.

TO THE CANDIDATE You are about to begin your pilgrimage through the Scottish Rite Degrees, and it may become for you one of the greatest and most inspiring experiences of your life. If you become a Prince of the Royal Secret by receiving the Thirty-second Degree and are no better or wiser than when you began your journey, your investment of time and money will have been in vain. If, however, you bring a receptive mind and a sensitive heart to these Degrees, you will indeed be a wiser and a better man. It is the hope and prayer of the Masters and the Brethren that your experiences may be rich and significant.

WHAT IS A REUNION? A Scottish Rite Reunion is exactly what the term implies. It is a reuniting of the membership after a period of separation. It is a homecoming get-together of the Brethren in a continuing fellowship of the Fraternity. The days of the Reunion are rich in comradeship among those of like mind and purpose. We here recognize stability and strength, and feel proud to be a part of a program of such magnitude and worth. Within this fellowship, the horizons of our own lives are lifted. The lessons of the Scottish Rite are taken, for the most part, from Antiquity. But the application of these lessons is as contemporary as tomorrow. The conflicts, choices, decisions, and ethical dilemmas men face, and the ideals of how we should live, do not change in their basics, even if they change in their circumstances. The sheer beauty of Masonry enthral ls and amazes as the panorama of centuries passes by. It is a time of sharing the significance and sacredness of the Scottish Rite Degrees together.

MEALS There is a minimal cost for all meals for members. Meals for members’ wives, candidates and candidates’ wives will be free as in the past.

SCOTTISH RITE LADIESRobin Thornton has very graciously accepted the position as the

hostess for the ladies who attend the reunion. She will meet with those ladies attending the reunion on Saturday, May 2, 2015, at 10:00 AM in the upper lobby to assist in coordinating the activities for the weekend.

THE ALMONER’S FUND “If thy brother be waxen poor and hand fail with thee, thou shalt relieve him.” At each meeting of Scottish Rite Bodies, the basket of fraternal assistance is passed, so that the brethren may have an opportunity to participate in replenishing the Almoner’s Fund. This fund, which is disbursed under the direction of the Almoner, may be used for any worthy cause. It may be clothing for the widow, food for the hungry, shoes for unfortunate children, medical care for the aged. This fund is maintained by voluntary contributions and has made many a heart grateful in time of need. Every worthy cause is considered.

ENDOWED MEMBERSHIPS Endowed memberships can be purchased by any member in good standing for a fee of $4,400.00, which may be paid in installments. The money is placed in a fund the corpus of which is never spent. The interest it draws pays the member’s dues while he is living. It also insures membership when the member is no longer in control of his faculties due to age or other infirmities, and then continues to help the Rite pay its bills and maintain its building and equipment, and keeps giving after he has passed away.

SANTA FE COURT OF HONOUR The Santa Fe Court of Honour is actively dedicated to promoting the welfare and best interests of the Scottish Rite in the Valley of Santa Fe. All Knights Commander of the Court of Honour (which also includes all 33° members) are eligible to become members of this organization. This is the place to become more involved in the life of the Rite. For more information about the Court of Honour, inquire at the office.

THE ORDER OF THE THISTLE Chartered in 1998, the Order of the Thistle of the Knights of St. Andrew has already become a very active organization. Any Scot-tish Rite Freemason of the 32° or higher may become a member. You can recognize members by their distinctive Scottish balmoral caps, with the color of the hackle/feather to indicate 32° (blue), KCCH (red) or 33° (white). The Order of the Thistle is dedicated to the preservation of our beautiful Temple. Its members hold workdays to make repairs on the building, the stage sets and wherever else they are needed. They organize fund-raising and educational activities and act as docents or guides when public functions are held in the building. Candidates who complete the 32nd Degree will immediately be eligible to join the Order of the Thistle. Dues are currently $25.00 annually. There is also an initiation fee, which will cover the cost of the Balmoral cap, hackle and a name-tag to be worn at Temple functions. The Order of the Thistle has also established a pipe band, which meets at 6:30 PM each Tuesday at the Temple. These meetings include instruction for bagpipers and drummers. Membership in the pipe band is also open to non-Masons, both men and women. Dues are only $20.00 per year. For more information about these programs, inquire at the office.

THE TEMPLE The Santa Fe Scottish Rite Temple was started in 1911 and dedicated in 1912, the year New Mexico became a state. The present kitchen, wardroom room and workers’ dormitory were added in 1951, consistent with the original architect’s design.

The Temple is inspired by the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, and is said to be the only public building in the United States of pure Moorish architecture.

Shown above is the artist’s conception of the building prepared before construction by the architectural firm of Hunt and Burns, Los Angeles. The original structure was built by contractor C.H. Martindale.

TWO HUNDRED TWENTY EIGHTH REUNION

LUNCH – 11:00 AM

The Lodge of Perfection The work of the Scottish Rite is to inspire and teach man that he must improve, refine and perfect himself. He must become a fit and worthy recipient of the Royal Secret, with the requsite knowledge that such a responsibility demands. The degrees of the Scottish Rite constitute a journey towards ever broadening horizons of knowledge. They teach of a nobler Virtue, Honor and Truth, and of one’s duty to direct one’s life towards those ends in all we think, speak and do. Though each Degree, or Body of Degrees, may have a general theme, no Degree teaches only a single lesson. No symbol has only a single meaning. Rather, our Rite is a great tapestry of Knowledge, where various threads of moral, ethical, philosophical, religious, political and mythical thought and symbols are interwoven to create a great body of teachings and lessons. These lessons have their application both for the individual and for society as a whole. Some of the lessons are easily apparent, others reveal themselves only to the diligent and determined seeker, or worker in the quarry. What you put into your Scottish Rite experience will be returned to you in like measure. The Scottish Rite is composed of four constituted “bodies.” The Lodge of Perfection governs a group known as the Ineffable Degrees. They begin with the Fourth Degree, and culminate with the discovery of the “Ineffable Name of God,” or The Lost Word of Freemasonry, which is discovered in the Thirteenth Degree. Its explanation and meaning will be presented in the Fourteenth Degree, also known as the Degree of Perfection.

The Chapter of the Rose Croix The Fifteenth through Eighteenth Degrees comprise the Chapter of Rose Croix. It commences with the trials of those who have acquired Knowledge, and who wish to climb to yet higher truths. The Chapter of Rose Croix presents Faith, Hope and Charity as sure guides to our actions, and as the safest paths through adversity. We are instructed to follow them in their highest form of human expression: as Compassion and the Law of Love. By this means we will arrive at a solution to one of the great enigmas of Nature and the manifested world.

The Council of Kadosh The Council of Kadosh comprises the Nineteenth through the Thirtieth Degrees. Also known as the “Philosophic and Chivalric Degrees,” they present various concepts of Deity and man’s search to discover Him. Remember that these lessons are provided for instruction, not as doctrine. The manner in which you worship the Creator is a private concern, and Freemasonry will not interfere with it. Our symbols are to be interpreted within the confine of your own beliefs, without intrusion. The Degrees in this series also teach of certain Orders of Knighthood and the lessons we should draw from their history and deeds.\

Class Picture(After the closing of the Consistory)THE SCOTTISH RITE LIBRARY

Our library is located in the candidates’ dormitory on the floor above the office. The collection is limited, but you might find some treasures. Candidates and members are welcome to browse the library; we just ask that you put the books and pamphlets back in the spot you found them. Most of the books displayed may be checked out. Since many members come to Santa Fe only for the semi-annual reunions, books may be checked out to be returned at the next reunion. Take the book you wish to borrow to the office to check it out. Our library has been little used in the past. If interest increases, we may be able to add to the collection.

25

26

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!

Members of the class, you are no longer candidates. You are now full-fledged members of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Santa Fe. When you assemble for your class photograph you will be continuing a tradition that is even older than our building. The Scottish Rite was first started in Santa Fe in 1886, when we received our charter (signed by Grand Commander Albert Pike) for the Lodge of Perfection degrees (4-14). The other three charters were granted in 1909. These charters are hanging in the wardrobe room. Our very first class for all the degrees was held in 1909, before the building was constructed. A composite portrait of this class is displayed in the dining room. Enlarged copies of the photographs of each class since then, most of them taken on the front steps, are bound in albums and kept in the library in the candidates’ dormitory. You will not be forgotten by the Santa Fe Scottish Rite, and we hope you will not forget us. If you found the degrees you just received to be valuable and meaningful, we encourage you to return to help confer them on new brethren in the future. As you have seen, it takes many people to present the degrees, operate the stage sets, move props, provide music, cook and serve the food and so on. You will be welcome if you come back to future reunions to help us keep this worthy enterprise going. You will be able to stay in our dormitories without charge, and you will find that the fellowship you have seen here continues to grow each reunion. In addition to helping confer the degrees, you will be welcome to see them again and again. As you know, taking all 29 degrees in just three days is an intense experience, and there is much that you will have missed. Watching a few of the degrees at a time in the future, without the stress the candidates’ schedule naturally creates, will be rewarding. You will always see and learn something new. In addition to programs for each reunion, we will send you a quarterly bulletin. In the fourth-quarter bulletin you will find a dues envelope for the coming year. This is the only dues notice you will receive unless you become delinquent. You will also receive a monthly magazine from the Supreme Council informing you of Scottish Rite and other Masonic activities on the national level. Please remember to let us know when you change your address. We will notify the Supreme Council and thus its publications and ours will follow you to your new home. In addition to our semi-annual reunions, we have monthly busi-ness meetings at the Temple on the fourth Monday of each month except July and December. You are very welcome to attend!

HELP CHILDREN READNEW MEXICO SCOTTISH RITE FOUNDATION

The New Mexico Scottish Rite Foundation is a non-profit corporation which has been organized solely for a combination of educational, charitable and scientific purposes, including the establishment and operation of clinics for childhood learning disabilities and language disorders. Training centers are in full operation in the Temple in Las Cruces and our newer centers in San Juan Lodge No. 25 (Aztec) , Bethlehem Lodge No. 56 (Belen), Mesa Lodge No. 68 (Albuquerque); Sandoval Lodge No. 76 (Rio Rancho); and Edgewood Lodge No. 82 (Edgewood). They serve children in the area who have reading problems which the local schools do not have the resources to correct. Scores of children have successfully completed the program and have found new success in their public school experience, but many others are on the waiting list. Many New Mexico teachers have taken courses in multi-sensory techniques pioneered by the Dallas Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital and the Scottish Rite Learning Center of West Texas in Lubbock. Your help is needed to make this project a success! Tax deductible donations can be made to the foundation by mailing them to:

New Mexico Scottish Rite Foundation6501 America’s Parkway NE, Suite 3700

Albuquerque, NM 87110

WHAT YOU CAN DO: 1. Let your local school district know you have an interest in this area. 2. Help us build a contact list of local diagnostic staff and resource room teachers who would like more information. 3. Learn what your local school district receives, budgets and spends for educating the learning-disabled.

HELP PRESERVE THE TEMPLE

On December 13, 1995, the Santa Fe Scottish Rite Temple Preservation Foundation was born. A 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, it is charged with the preservation, renovation and maintenance of the Temple in Santa Fe. The Temple is our legacy to the future of the Scottish Rite, and we need to leave it in good condition for future generations of Scottish Rite Masons. Should funds be given for a specific project, they will be spent on that project when it is undertaken. Your support of this worthy cause is heartily encouraged.
