Brethren –
November 4, is our next Stated Meeting and we will have the second reading of our
Officers for 2014. Please make your dinner reservations with the Scottish Rite Office 714-
543-7277. Starting January 1, 2014 if you don’t have dinner reservations, the cost will be
$19.00 per person, please get in the habit of making your reservations now. We have been
losing money on the dinners because we have to guess how many will attend and if we
guess too high we have to pay for the extra dinners.
Brethren if you have not had a chance to stop by our Language Center please stop by and see the wonder-
ful changes that have been made. So far the outside of the building has been painted, a new driveway has
been put in and sometime next month a sprinkler system will go in. Our new security system has been
installed and is up and running inside and out and new carpeting will be installed soon. Many special
thanks go to: Honorable Dave Price 32° KCCH for finding the contractor who installed the driveway,
power washing the building, and recruiting all the other Brothers who gave their time to get this job
done. Brother Mike Selix, 32° for recruiting Hugo from Long Beach Scottish Rite, two other gentlemen
(who are not even Masons but want to become one), plus several other Scottish Rite Masons. Thanks to
Honorable Jack Slagel, 32° KCCH, and Frankie Rosario, 32° (President of the Language Center). I have
been under the weather and there are some names that have just left me but we thank all of you for a fan-
tastic job.
Our Reunion Class will be held November 22nd and 23rd. Our Degree Teams have been working very hard
and will be well prepared. Please mark your calendars and come out and support this important ceremo-
ny. It is always good to have sideliners to let the Teams know they have your support and to let our new
candidates know that we are a family that cares.
Kristi and I send our best wishes to all of you and your families for a very blessed Thanksgiving.
GET INVOLVED AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!

Rick

My Brothers— I found this article and thought that it might be of interest to you.
"IF WITHIN THE FIRST SQUARE OR ANGLE OF MY WORK"
Our Study Club committee has been asked the following question: what is the meaning of "If within the first square or angle of my work?" We should greatly appreciate any light you may be able to shed upon the subject.
L. C. H., Arizona.
The expression, "If within the first square or angle of my work," is found in a certain part of the work of some states. Back in the early days of the society, a brother from Idaho requested an explanation of this phrase, I noted as I was reading over some of the old files of THE BUILDER; apparently, no one could then shed any light on it. I hope he will see this also.
In the oldest American ritual known to me, which I believe to date back to 1805 or 1808, I find the following notation which sets forth the explanation that was offered by whoever inserted the phrase in the ritual:
"At the building of King Solomon's Temple, the Fellowcrafts had certain angles or squares marked out for them to work in and they were under no obligation to attend any sign or token given them beyond that angle or square."
In other words, they were assigned certain sections of the work and had no responsibilities outside of these sections. You will see that the phrase corresponds to the other one, "if within the length of my cabletow." It has that same significance.
I would hesitate to even guess as to how this phrase came to be included. It might be simply a fanciful in-vention and then again, the idea might be found in Josephus or some other early Jewish writer. The most interesting feature is how this phrase came to be handed down from perhaps 1808 and included in the work in some of the Western States while generally discarded in the East.

From the Editor
Greetings from the Council of Kadosh,
It is November and my time serving in the Council of Kadosh is nearing its end. It
has been my honor to serve you in our Valley this year. I will, however, be leaving you in
the very capable hands of Brother Ray Ramirez. He has been a linchpin in the kitchen
and a driving force behind many of our Super Breakfasts.
It is important to note that the Officer lines in our Valley are filled with Brothers
with strong character and determination. With our leaders Ill. Rick Wood and Ill. Bob
McNamara, we are bound to have a positive effect on our world. I thank them for their
support during my time serving in the Council of Kadosh. Our fall Reunion class is com-
ing up on the fourth weekend in November and I’m looking forward to participating in
our degrees.
I hope to see you there.
Fraternally,
Luke Keith

After our American flag at the Language Center was shredded in the last
wind storm a replacement was needed and Ill. Bob McNamara took up the
challenge. He contacted the El Bekal Shrine Center where the El Bekal staff
was more than happy to provide a new flag to fly on our pole. Big thanks to
Ill. Bob McNamara and the El Bekal Shrine for the gift of a new flag for the
Scottish Rite office and Language Center.

Childhood Language Center News
Greetings my Brothers !
For the past 4 weeks our Brothers have volunteered tirelessly in improving our
Valley Office and Childhood Language Center. The asphalt parking area and drive ap-
proach have been repaired or replaced. The exterior of the building has been pressure
washed and given 2 fresh coats of white paint…the columns received an accent beige
color. The porch and sidewalks have been pressure washed and 20 years of dirt and
grime washed away. In December we will be installing a new irrigation / sprinkler
system and over seeding the lawn with Winter Rye for a green lush lawn. A new sign
with the new CLC Logo is being made and will adorn the property corner. Special
thanks go out to Brothers Wood, McNamara, Godeke, Rosario, Slagle, Olsen, Ramos,
Selix for deciding to make a difference in OUR Valley.
Feel free to join in the fun…ask me how ! Bro. Dave Price
We are rapidly approaching the end of the year which means that the 2014 dues
notices are just around the corner. If you have not yet paid your 2013 dues this means
that you are in danger of falling 2 years behind. If you are or know of a Brother who is
struggling to keep his dues current, please let us know so that we can offer assistance
where possible.
There are a number of ways available to help members if they are having prob-
lems paying their dues. Please call the office at 714 543-7277 and we will try to help.
Our goal is to treat this in a Masonic way and not a business way. After all, we are all
Brothers and Scottish Rite Masons!
