It is a testament to the deepening of the relationship between our churches since 1999, when the Catholic Church and the Lutheran World Federation signed a Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification.

In these dark days leading up to Christmas, the promise of light and hope, as personified by Saint Lucy, continues to be a strong message for our world.

May this Service be a reminder of the faith that we share. May this Service be a time of joy for all of us.

GREETINGI am delighted to greet you, on behalf of The Swedish Church in London, at this, the third Sankta Lucia Service in Westminster Cathedral. We are most grateful to the Archbishop of Westminster, the Administrator and the College of Cathedral Chaplains for their invitation.

My thanks go to Martin Baker, Matthew Martin and the Choir of Westminster Cathedral; Bo Tobiasson and Mäster Olof ’s Choir, Stockholm; and in particular to Anne Sofie von Otter, our eminent soloist.

I thank Britta Snickars, Director of Music at The Swedish Church in London, for her work with Ulrika Eleonora Church Choir throughout the year, of which this service is a fine example. LUCIALong ago, the night between the 12th and the 13th of December in Sweden was the longest night of the year, a night when it was believed that extra protection was needed against darkness and evil. It was the custom in some parts of Sweden to prepare a meal and serve it by candlelight during that long and cold night. Swedes sometimes called this “att lussa” – to light, to celebrate Lucia. Lussa is a Swedish word created from lux, Latin for “light”, which in Italian is luce or lucia.

On December 13th A.D. 304, a young woman called Lucia died in Syracuse, Sicily. She had refused to make a sacrifice to the emperor Diocletian and the punishment was death, martyrdom. Legend asserts that Lucia had declared herself willing to sacrifice even her eyes for her true belief. At the end she said: “I know of no other God than my Creator in Heaven and I am prepared to die for him”. Lucia is an enduring symbol of light in darkness.

Lucia’s name and her story reached Sweden from Germany and England, where she is known as Lucy. In the middle of the 19th century, Gunnar Wennerberg brought the Lucia song to Sweden from Naples, after a visit to Italy. The song, Sul mare luccica l’astro d’argento, is about a little fishing port, Santa Lucia. It was given a Swedish text and became very popular. In 1927 the Swedish newspaper Stockholmstidningen organised a contest, “crowned” its first Lucia and so introduced the modern way of celebrating Lucia. Formerly the procession (lussetåget) had consisted only of men.

Nowadays the name “Lucia” has a special place in every Swede’s heart. Lucia is celebrated in practically every home and church, community and club, school and office. Lucia appears, dressed in a white gown, with a crown of candles, accompanied by a group of girls, also dressed in white, and sometimes by young boys wearing tall paper cones with stars on them. They all sing the Lucia song and Christmas carols.

The many legends surrounding St Lucia cannot alone explain why, in a Protestant country, she has come to mean so much. For Swedes she is a powerful symbol of the blessed light we all need. Jesus said: “I am the light of the world: those who follow me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8.12).

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1.5). May this Lucia celebration inspire us to receive Christ and his light into our hearts this Christmas.

SANKTA LUCIA SERVICE 2010

The Choir of Westminster CathedralWestminster Cathedral Choir is acclaimed as one of the world’s great choirs. Since its foundation in 1903 it has occupied a unique and enviable position at the forefront of English church music, not least because of the ground-breaking work of its first Master of Music, Richard Terry, who revived the great works of the English and continental Renaissance composers. The choir’s fame grew under Terry as it presented this forgotten music, revolutionising attitudes to the repertoire. Innovation continued under George Malcolm who pioneered the development of the choir’s sound along continental lines, resulting in a choir that was truly revolutionary in both what and how it sang.

The choir continues these traditions under its present Master of Music, Martin Baker, and it remains the only Catholic Cathedral choir in the world to sing daily Mass and Vespers. More recent holders of the post have included Colin Mawby, Stephen Cleobury, David Hill and James O’Donnell.

The choir’s reputation is ever-expanding and it continues to reach new audiences through its series of acclaimed recordings on the Hyperion label, the two most recent being the Palestrina Lamentations and a sequence of music from Advent

to Epiphany featuring music written specially for the choir.  Forthcoming releases include two Palestrina Masses, Missa Te Deum laudamus and Missa Tu es Petrus. In 1998 the choir was awarded the Gramophone Awards for ‘Best Choral Recording of the Year’ and ‘Record of the Year’ for the performance of Frank Martin’s Messe and Pizzetti’s Requiem. 

The choir has a history of commissioning and performing new music, famous examples being Britten’s Missa brevis for boys’ voices, the Mass in G minor by Vaughan Williams and compositions by Wood, Holst and Howells. Within the last decade the choir has commissioned new Masses from James MacMillan, Peter Maxwell Davies, Judith Bingham, John Tavener, Matthew Martin and Stephen Hough, all of which were first performed in the context of the regular liturgies at Westminster Cathedral. 

Westminster Cathedral Choir features frequently on radio and television.  When its busy liturgical schedule permits it takes its music further afield.  In addition to regular concerts around the UK, recent tours have included Hungary, Norway, Germany, Belgium, Italy and the USA.

Martin Baker, Master of Music

Born in Manchester in 1967, Martin Baker studied at the Royal Northern College of Music Junior School, Chetham’s School of Music and Downing College, Cambridge, then held positions at London’s Westminster and St Paul’s Cathedrals before being appointed to Westminster Abbey at the age of 24. During his eight years at the Abbey, initially as Sub-Organist and subsequently as Acting Organist and Master of the Choristers, his performances on broadcasts and recordings with the Abbey Choir received wide critical acclaim.

Martin Baker is recognised as a dynamic choral conductor. Since his appointment to Westminster Cathedral as Master of Music in 2000, the choir has maintained its high profile both in the Roman Catholic Church and in the musical world in general. He has commissioned and directed the choir in the premieres of a number of new choral masses, including works by composers such as James MacMillan, Peter Maxwell Davies, Judith Bingham and John Tavener.

Under Martin’s direction the choir has given concerts regularly in the UK, participating in many prestigious festivals such as South Bank’s Messiaen and Maxwell Davies celebrations, and toured in the USA, Hungary, Germany, Belgium, Norway and Italy. In 2005 Martin Baker was invited to address the Congregation

for Divine Worship at the Vatican on the Liturgical Role of the Choir. In 2006 he founded the Conference of Catholic Directors of Music, an association which brings together the leading catholic cathedral and church musicians in the UK and Ireland, and which aims to promote and foster quality of music in Roman Catholic worship. In November 2009 he attended a meeting of Pope Benedict and a select group of artists from all over the world in the Sistine Chapel, to mark the tenth anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s Letter to Artists.

As an organist, Martin Baker is much in demand all over the world. Performing regularly in the UK, he has recently given concerts in France, Holland, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Austria, the USA, and Russia. The winner of the St Alban’s Improvisation competition in 1997, improvisation features regularly in his recital programmes.

Matthew Martin, Assistant Master of Music

Matthew Martin was born in 1976 and read music at Magdalen College, Oxford where he was organ scholar. After graduating in 1997, he went on to the Royal Academy of Music, London as a post-graduate student winning all the major organ prizes and subsequently continued his studies in Paris with Marie-Claire Alain. He was recently elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music and is currently a teacher in keyboard skills and organ improvisation there.

In 2000 Matthew was appointed Organist and Choirmaster at the University Church of St Mary the Virgin and Assistant

Organist at New College, Oxford before moving to Canterbury Cathedral in 2002 where he played for the enthronement of Dr Rowan Williams as Archbishop. Since 2004 he has been Assistant Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral. In addition to daily work with the cathedral choir, he organises and gives many of the cathedral’s organ recitals. These recently included performances of the complete organ works of Jehan Alain over five concerts and Messiaen’s Messe de la Pentecôte and La Nativité du Seigneur.

As well as his busy schedule as a recitalist and director, Matthew is in increasing demand as a composer and his music is widely performed both in this country and further afield. Recent commissions have come from the Cardinall’s Musick, the choirs of Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s Cathedral, as well as a Mass to celebrate the Feast of the Dedication of Westminster Cathedral.

Each year during August, Matthew directs the Nave Choir of boys and men as part of the Edington Festival of Music within the Liturgy.

Anne Sofie von Otter, Mezzo-sopranoConsidered one of the finest singers of her generation, Anne Sofie von Otter continues to be sought after by many of the major conductors, orchestras, opera and recording companies of the world. Recent operatic highlights have included Bizet’s Carmen (Glyndebourne and Santa Fe Festivals), Gluck’s Orfeo (Stockholm, Munich) and Alceste (Paris Chatelet), Ottavia in Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea and Lully’s Thesée (Paris, Theatre des Champs-Elysees), Strauss’ Clairon/Capriccio (Paris Palais Garnier), Ravel’s L’Heure Espagnole (Stockholm), Didon in Berlioz’ Les Troyens (Geneva), Baba the Turk in The Rake’s Progress (Vienna), Wagner’s Brangäne (Los Angeles) and Waltraute (Festivals of Salzburg and Aix-en-Provence), Offenbach’s La Grande

An acclaimed recitalist, Anne Sofie von Otter performs around the globe with her accompanist, Bengt Forsberg and is renowned for her fresh and explorative programming. An equally busy concert career takes her regularly to the major halls of Europe and North America where she enjoys a regular partnership with some of the world’s pre-eminent conductors.

Boasting an extensive and diverse discography, Anne Sofie von Otter recorded exclusively with Deutsche Grammophon between 1985 and 2009 but began an exciting new recording relationship earlier this year with Naïve Paris. The first Naïve recording, Love Songs, a collaboration with legendary jazz pianist Brad Mehldau, was released in October 2010.

Anne Sofie von Otter’s current season includes an extensive recital tour of the USA and Europe together with Brad Mehldau, orchestral concerts with the Israel Philharmonic/Zubin Mehta, the Los Angeles Philharmonic/Esa-Pekka Salonen and the San Francisco Symphony/Michael Tilson Thomas, as well as tours with Concerto Copenhagen/Mortensen and Les Musiciens du Louvre/Minkowski. In a season of operatic debuts, Anne Sofie von Otter will sing new productions of Rameau’s Castor et Pollux at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien and Charpentier’s Medee for the Frankfurt Opera, as well as Händel’s Tamerlano, alongside Placido Domingo, at Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona.

Ulrika Eleonora Church Choir

The Ulrika Eleonora Church Choir, some 50 men and women from the Anglo-Swedish community in London, sing at church services and concerts throughout the year. Their repertoire includes music from all epochs. The Lucia services being held this December in Brighton, at the Ulrika Eleonora Parish Church in Marylebone, the Swedish Seamen’s Church, Rotherhithe and at Westminster Cathedral are a highlight of the choir’s year. As part of the celebrations held earlier this year to mark the tercentenary of The Swedish Church in London, the choir performed a Te Deum for choir and orchestra by the Swedish composer, Otto Olsson in Ulrika Eleonora Church, and also travelled to Paris to sing at Église du Saint-Esprit and the Swedish Church.

Britta Snickars, Director of Music

Britta Snickars has been the Organist and Master of the Choristers of Strängnäs Cathedral, Sweden, since 2000. She is currently on leave of absence from Strängnäs and fulfilling the position of Director of Music at The Swedish Church in London until August 2011.

During her initial academic years, Britta studied several aspects of music, including piano, song, harmony, the organ and conducting, qualifying later on as a cantor. Her first post was as Cantor of The Swedish Church on Gran Canaria.

Britta holds an MA in organ playing and choral teaching from the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, where she studied with, among others, Eric Ericson (choir), Anders Öhrwall (Baroque choir), Gotthard Arnér (organ) and Anders Bondeman (organ improvisation). She subsequently spent 14 years at the Academy teaching improvisation and musical accompaniment to the organ students.

Britta founded and developed the music department of the Parish of Kista, Stockholm, over a period of 16 years from the parish’s inception. She followed this with an eight-year music consultancy to the Bishop’s Office within the Diocese of Stockholm, where she initiated collaboration between the Royal Academy of Music’s organ faculty and the diocese, encouraging the students to play at churches within the diocese during the academic year. She has composed, arranged and set to music a number of hymns and chorales that appear in the current Church of Sweden hymnals.

Mäster Olof’s Choir, Stockholm

Mäster Olofskören was founded in Stockholm in 1940. After being dormant for a number of years, the choir was revived in 1984. It is based in Gamla Stan (The Old Town) in Stockholm, where it is linked to Mäster Olofsgården, a centre for history, culture and the performing arts. Mäster Olof was a well-known personality in Swedish 16th century history. He was advisor to King Gustav Vasa and very much involved in the Swedish reformation from Catholicism to Protestantism.

The choir currently consists of around 40 singers, male and female, ranging in age from 25 to 60. They pride themselves on having a broad repertoire, ranging from traditional Swedish folksongs to pop, and from sacred hymns to modern secular pieces. This allows them to give very varied performances, although they generally

have a theme for each concert, and they enjoy working with other choirs, or music groups. In order to enhance their rapport with the audience – and with the conductor! – they generally perform without sheet music.

Under their conductor Bo Tobiasson, Senior Lecturer at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, the choir usually gives two major performances a year in Sweden, in the spring and the autumn, as well as taking part in traditional Sankta Lucia and Christmas concerts. They are also occasionally invited to the Royal Palace Church to participate in Mass. Every other year the choir goes on tour abroad, mostly within Europe, performing at a variety of venues, including cathedrals, music festivals and concert halls. Among the countries

visited are Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Great Britain and several countries in Eastern Europe and the Balkans.

En sekund är jag evig och sen vet jag inget mer bara ett – att jag lever lika fullt som någon annan. Jag är här och mitt på en frusen väg finns det värme ändå fastän snön börjat falla och himmelen blir grå.

Här är stillhet och tystnad nu när psalmen tonat ut men jag bär dom gamla orden i mitt hjärta som förut. Och jag sjunger för himlen kanske någon mer hör på “Hosianna i höjden” sen så börjar jag att gå. Och jag går till dom andra jag vill känna julens frid. Jag vill tro att han föddes och finns med oss här i tiden. Det är jul – och det finns ett barn i mig som vill tro att det hänt och som tänder ett ljus varje söndag i advent.

And I can see how they sparkle and they fade before my eyes, and the truth is coming closer like a wonder in disguise. We are caught here for a moment like an imprint of a hand on an old and frosted window or a footprint in the sand. For a while I’m eternal – that’s the only thing I know, I am here and we share our dreams about our destination. It is cold out there, the snow is white but I am warm deep inside, I am warm ’cause I know that my faith will be my guide.

Now there is silence around me, I have heard those words again in a hymn of grace and glory, saying: nothing is in vain! I can sing – and I believe it, let the message reach the sky. Oh silent night, let your promise never die! And I long for the others, it is peaceful in the church. He was born for a purpose and that’s why we’re here together. Holy night, I feel like a child inside, and I believe he was sent. So I’m lighting a candle each Sunday in Advent.

Det folk som vandrar i mörkret ser ett stort ljus, över dem som bor i mörkrets land strålar ljuset fram. Du låter jublet stiga, du gör glädjen stor. De gläds inför dig som man gläds vid skörden, som man jublar när bytet fördelas.

Oket som tyngde dem, stången på deras axlar, förtryckarens piska bryter du sönder, som den dag då Midjan besegrades. Stöveln som bars i striden och manteln som fläckats av blod, allt detta skall brännas, förtäras av eld.

Ty ett barn har fötts, en son är oss given. Väldet är lagt på hans axlar, och detta är hans namn: Allvis härskare, Gudomlig hjälte, Evig fader, Fredsfurste.

Väldet skall bli stort, fredens välsignelser utan gräns för Davids tron och hans rike. Det skall befästas och hållas vid makt med rätt och rättfärdighet nu och för evigt. Herren Sebaots lidelse skall göra detta.
