Sangin Para-Vets Shine Teaching Farmers Livestock Training Mentored by GA ADT Vet Team Who : GA ADT Veterinary Team What : GA ADT Conducts Microscope, Fecal Analysis, Infertility/Breed Improvement, Artificial Insemination (AI), Castration, and Ketosis Training with DAIL Ext. Manager, Para-Vets, and farmers When : 8-10 Oct 2013 Where : Sangin District Center, Helmand Province Why : To provide essential livestock technical skill training that will be utilized by DAIL staff to train farmers in the Sangin District END STATE/EFFECTS : The GA ADT Veterinary Team mentored the third of three days of training with Sangin Para-Vets, Mohammed Qasam and Saddiqullah Sarwani, leading classes on microscope parasite analysis and castration techniques to Sangin farmers at the District Center. The Para-Vets explained the procedures and answered farmer’s questions on the topics covered. A stool sample was collected from a sick cow brought by a farmer and Qasam showed farmers how to detect parasites with the microscope. Para-Vet Sarwani assisted examining the cow with the GA ADT Veterinarian, MAJ Johnson, and provided instructions for treatment to the farmer. The Para-Vets along with Abdul Aziz, worked together conducting a training demonstration with area farmers on proper goat castration in the Sangin demonstration farm. They explained the benefits, methods, and possible complications to avoid related to livestock castration. The Para-Vets are the DAIL Ag Ext. link to area farmers as local experts in treating and caring for their livestock. The presentation of livestock training taught by the GA ADT Vet Team helps connect GIRoA to the local Sangin community. SIGNIFICANCE : This training provided by the GA ADT Veterinary Team established essential knowledge and technical skills the DAIL Extension staff will utilize to teach local Sangin farmers on problems facing local livestock. The DAIL Extension staff will also help link GIRoA efforts to the Sangin farming population through District led instruction.

PATH FORWARD: Over a 9 month course of livestock training by the GA ADT Vet Team, a steady increase of DAIL Ext. staff, local Para-Vets, and farmers are actively participating and becoming involved with follow-on training. The DAIL Ext. staff is developing into Sangin leaders capable of conducting training to improve livestock care and treatment to guarantee future economic growth in livestock agri-business.
