    Over 82 acres now provide open space and uniquerecreational opportunities for all who visit the facilities

    along the San Gabriel River in Lakewood.

    1967 Monte Verde Park is built on the west side o the San GabrielRiver, providing Lakewood residents a ully enclosed park or recreationopportunities including overnight camping experiences.

    1973 Lakewood purchased a strip o proper ty located on the east sideo the San Gabriel River. Eucalyptus trees and a variety o plant materialbeautied this unsightly land, which was named River Park.

    1975 Lakewood purchased the 7.5 acre Lakewood Stables, now knownas the Lakewood Equestrian Center.

    1990 Lakewood expanded River Park and developed the additionalacreage on the east side o the river. The completion o Rynerson Parkand the city owned Lakewood Equestrian Center brought a variety ounique outdoor recreation experiences to area residents.

    2001 Monte Verde Park was renovated adding a 3,000 square ootVista Lodge, improving the plant material consisting o several ecosys-tems representing elements o native Caliornia landscape and addeda 1/4 mile nature trail.

    2003 West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail provides 17-acreso trails and open space or passive activity. The beautiying o this gre-enway urther completes the connection o open space along the river.Funding or this project was provided by the State o Caliornia, State

    Resources Agency.

    2007 The West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail extension pro-vides an additional 2.5 acres o trails and open space along the riverand connects with the original trail at the south end o Monte Verde Park.Funding or this project was provided by the State o Caliornia, StateResources Agency.

    Habitat Along the RiverThe beautication and use o native trees, plants and grasses

    benets nature by promoting opportunities or wildlie use.

    From the oot o the San Gabriel Mountains along 56 miles to

    the Ocean, the river is a pathway or a multitude o birds search-

    ing or sh and other ood along the way. Watch, and youll see

    birds stopping to sip at the water and rest a while. Sparrow

    hawks, herons, and egrets with their long, beautiul necks can

    be seen. Ospreys create a nesting site and other animals such

    as squirrels and barn owls have been sighted. Butterfies and a

    multitude o other insects reside in the native environment.

    Regional PlanThe project is consistent with the regional plan prepared by the

    Caliornia Resources Agency, San Gabriel and Lower Los Angeles

    Rivers and Mountains Conservancy and Santa Monica Mountains

    Conservancy, called: Common Ground rom the Mountains tothe Sea, dated October 2001. This plan is a watershed and

    open space plan that provides guidance and direction or the

    uture restoration, preservation and development in and around

    the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Rivers.

    Rynerson Park

    Discover the newly expanded West San Gabri-

    el River Parkway Nature Trail. This additional

    2 acres o open space is located along the

    river just south o Del Amo Blvd. The nearly

    mile trail connects to the existing trail just

    south o Monte Verde Park oering walkers

    and joggers over 2 miles o trails (round trip)

    to enjoy. The entire project eatures numer-

    ous trees, shrubs and wildfowers that provide

    habitats or various birds and small mammals. It

    also provides a passive natural experience or the

    enjoyment and enrichment o the community.

    The completion o this phase enhances public

    ation in an urban setting.
