Attention Senior Parents! If your child plans to attend college (certificate program, 2 year or 4 year college) next year, please plan to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) ASAP. This form allows colleges to award grants, loans and scholar-ships to your student and EVERY family should file. Myth: My family makes too much money; we won’t qualify for aid. Although it is true that you may not qualify for certain types of aid, not all financial aid is based on income. Many scholarships ask for information from the FAFSA, which you will not have if you don’t complete the FAFSA. Students also qualify for student loans with the best terms, including low interest rates and repayment grace periods, by complet-ing the FAFSA. Myth: I must be accepted to college to apply for financial aid. You’ll want to apply to the college ASAP if you haven’t yet, but you don’t need an acceptance letter before applying for aid. Apply for financial aid from all of the schools to which you have applied right away! Myth: I have to wait to finish my taxes in order to complete the FAFSA. You may miss deadlines if you wait, and that can be very expensive. The FAFSA may be completed with estimated figures; just remember to change your FAFSA once you have the actual figures. All of this can be simply done online. Myth: There’s no hurry to complete the FAFSA and other financial aid paperwork. Be aware that financial aid filing deadlines can be as early as February 1st. Deadlines vary by college, so be sure to check with all of the schools on your list to be certain of the deadlines. Please feel free to contact a member of the SRTC counseling team if you have questions about the FAFSA or need help completing the paperwork. Deanna Farrell, School Counselor (Sanford students), 324-2942 (ext. 1784) [email protected] Roland Legere, School Counselor (non-Sanford students), 324-2942 (ext. 1778) [email protected] Kathy Sargent, Career Planning Counselor, 324-2942 (ext. 1779) [email protected] SRTC is partnering with Sanford High School to host a Financial Aid Night on February 16, 2012 at 5:30pm in the SHS cafeteria. After the presentation, families are encouraged to stay and complete their FAFSA; assistance will be available and the SRTC counseling staff will be in attendance.4
