Letter from the Chairman of the Boardby Kel Kronemeyer

HERE COMES SPRING!!As I sit here in Florida on the 19th of March, one day before spring, it feels more like summer with temperatures in the high 80’s. I’m sure that’s not the case as we go farther north, especially at Sandy Pines. Spring is anticipated especially after a long hard winter. Spring is tantalizing with some nice days followed by cool wet dreary days. Spring is like a yoyo with our emotions, because we want so desperately for it to continue. Spring is invigorating as we hear the happy sounds of the birds, as the early owers begin to pop up and blossom, as the owering trees bud and bloom and as other trees bud, and move through the stages of leang out. Spring is a time of new life, a time of digging, of planting, of renewal. Spring brings new

hope in anticipation of increasingly warmer weather, of summer, of a fun time at Sandy Pines with family and friends.

So here comes spring…ready or not. Final preparations are being made by our wonderful staff for our return and a summer lled with fun activities. You are planning

now to have your lots raked and cleaned and homes washed by June 1. You are planning any improvements and planning to get the necessary permits. You are planning family gatherings and other friends you want to entertain, and setting times.

Let’s decide right now to have the attitude and the desire to make this the very best season we’ve ever had at Sandy Pines. Let’s spend time asking and answering this question: “How can we make it happen?”

My thoughts go to the words of one of my favorite hymns. “Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, sun, moon, and stars in their courses above, join with all nature in manifold witness to Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.”

Looking forward to seeing you at Sandy Pines very soon!

Letter from the Presidentby Gene Van Koevering

On the 15th of this month, we will begin welcoming back many of our Members and are excited to do so!! I hope it has been a great winter for you wherever you spent it, but on behalf of our Staff here at Sandy Pines and Lake Monterey Golf Course, we say “Welcome Home”!!

As Members, we will all begin our spring cleanup, and I encourage you to please pay attention to the timelines for cleaning, leaf removal, mowing, etc. that must be met, to avoid being surprised by charges for not having the sites ready by June 1st. This timeline may be tight for some, but it is the intent of the Board to be showing our “Best” by that date, which generally coincides with the selling season here in the park, as well. Let’s make our Park, in 2015, the most beautiful year of our history!!

March gave us an opportunity to gain some momentum in some of the areas I mentioned in the March newsletter, specically:

• WewereabletoreceivelowerinternetservicepricingfromCharter!!Wewillnowofferthegreat speed and service for $78 less a season. 2014 pricing was $270/$45 a month for a six month minimum. 2015 pricing, including taxes and fees, will be $192/$32 a month for six months. This is a signicant savings to the membership and we are excited to offer the new price.

• ProgresshasbeengreatwithrespecttodevelopingourownSandyPinesTVchannels,we should have at least two channels up and useable by the opening of the Park on April 15, 2015.

• Asmentioned in theMarch newsletter,GaryPeters has been hired as the newGolfCourse Operations Manager. We welcomed him on March 23rd as he began his tenure here with us.

• WeshouldhaveaRecyclePlaninplacebythetimetheparkopens, howeverIdonothave the details as of this writing. The intent is to hopefully have a Service Provider offer curbside pickup, with direct contract with those Members wishing to reycle.

As soon as the Golf Committee gets back in town, it will be their charge to develop one or more options to present to the Board by the June meeting. Such requests will be for approval of language for placement on the election ballot in August. This is a vitally important issue to the future of one of our greatest amenities.

I believe you, as Members, feel the same due to the quantity of returned surveys that we received from the membership, taking advantage of a time when your voice and choice could be heard. I am condent that the committee and the Board will submit an option or options that most closely match the results of the survey and the comments from the membership. Please pay attention to the forthcoming information. Plan to attend one of the many forums that will be held by committee members. Most importantly, plan to vote!! If you want to sell the course, keep the course, and want to have a voice in how to fund the course, you need to vote!!

Another reminder and reason to vote: As you know each year there are three Board Director seats open for incoming Candidates. This year will be no exception. If you believe you have the background and experience with managing a company, I (and the Board) would encourage you to think about sharing that experience and knowledge with the park through your willingness to run and serve as a Director.

My personal perspective is that we are living in exciting times with opportunities for Sandy Pines. Every day seems like another day of new possibilities that were not available before. Will we be able to take advantage of these opportunities? Yes!!

Our membership is comprised of many talented and gifted people in my experience of working with many of them. Add the talented and gifted Staff we have that is committed to their work and this membership, and I can’t think of any place I would rather be, working with anyone other than I do, serving anyone other than the Members here at Sandy Pines!!

With that said, I implore you to not “just think about running for the Board”, but ask you to step forward and lend us your expertise and use it to make Sandy Pines, Lake Monterey Golf Course and Sandy Pines Condo Development better than it has ever been, for the generations to follow.

Thank you for the extreme pleasure and honor to serve you in this position, here at Sandy Pines.

Letter from the President ...continued from page 3WELCOME

GARY PETERS!Be sure to stop by Lake Monterey Golf Course during our period of transition this spring. Jim Spray will be retiring in mid-June, so stop in to wish him well in his well-deserved retirement. Gary Peters has been hired as the new Manager of Golf Course Operations. Be sure to welcome him to our Leadership Team as you return to the Park.

Adult Recreation Updateby Mary Applehof

Every year, we work on new activities and events for our summer fun at Sandy Pines! This year I am working on a human foosball game. It is exactly how it sounds. You are the players in the court, and have to hold on to a sliding bar, while trying to score! It is sure to be fun for everyone!

Another new event this year is the 1st Annual Sandy Pines Highland games. We will be watching all the Highland competitors participate in six events that include the Caber toss to the hammer throw. The Caber toss is a tree that has been cut and trimmed down so one end is slightly wider than the other. It can vary in length from 16 to 22 feet and between 100–180 lbs. The caber is thrown, and judged on accuracy of the throw. The Highland Games will be held on Saturday, June 13, with Games to start at 12 noon, in the Flea Market area. Camping is available for Friday and Saturday night. If you are a Highlander, and want to camp, please callGreg Breen at 248-640-5239 to make a reservation (he is a member) and for any questions you may have. If you go to the website (www.sandypines.com), you will see that they have absolutely everything there and more for the Camper.

We will also be doing the second annual Rainbow of Color Run/Walk on Saturday, August 1! I’m quite sure you have heard about the color runs that are happening all over the United States. Well, we are going to create rainbows all over Sandy Pines! This is going to be a fund raiser for Sandy Pines to purchase two new AED’s (automatic external debrillator) for our Administration Ofce and the Phase 3 gate. Let me explain a color run: The Rainbow of Color Run is a unique paint race that celebrates healthiness, happiness, and individuality. The Rainbow Color Run is not about how fast you nish the race, but it is more about having the time of your life! The Color Run is an un-timed race for all ages, in which participants are doused from head to toe in different colors at different stations along the route. The fun continues after the color runners/walkers complete the course, with an unforgettable nish celebration including music, refreshments and a massive color throw! We are making Rainbow’s all over Sandy Pines! We are looking for some sponsors for this race. Your name will be printed on the back of the participant’s T-shirts, and we will also put your business or name on all of the registration forms and announcements that will be distributed all over the Park! Please let me know if you are interested by e-mailing the Recreation Dept. at [email protected]. Thank you in advance.

We have implemented a new volunteer system for all of our fun events. I hope that some of you have heard of sign up genius. It is a very simple sign up website where I will put details of events that we are in need of volunteers. You simply sign up your name to the time and event at which you are willing to volunteer. In order to get this under way, I need your e-mail address! If you would please send me your e-mail address, I will then include you in this sign up genius. I will only use your e-mail address/sign up genius for event volunteer purposes. Please e-mail your address to: [email protected]. Thank you, in advance.

A new group is forming this summer for all Ukulele players! This group will meet on Tuesday afternoons from 1-3 p.m. at site K-91, beginning June 9. Sales Department Newsby Kathy Molner

Hello, and welcome back!

I would like to offer a sincere thank you from the Sales Ofce, for making our 2014 season such a huge success. We appreciate all of your kind words in the surveys.

Just a quick note…Some of you were asking if there is a Park like ours, down south. Well, I went to Tampa in January for two reasons. I attended a very large RV show at the State Fairgrounds in Tampa, to see if this was a place where we should be advertising our Park. I also wanted to see if there was a Park comparable to ours for the members of Sandy Pines.

I decided, after spending two full days of touring and talking to people down there, that it is probably not a place for us to spend our advertising dollars. The majority of people there are motor home folks, and with our narrow roads and our garages being so close to the streets, it is almost impossible to bring these big rigs into the majority of our sites.

I was unable to nd a Park that could even come close to ours in amenities. We certainly are a privileged group of people to call this place our summer home. The value that we have here, is like no other. We should be very proud.

Thank you all for making this Park the wonderful place that it is!

Park RangersRecently, four members of our Rangers staff completed the Medical First Responder course. All full time Ranger staff are currently trained from the Medical First Responder Level to Paramedic Level. This training affords us the ability to provide immediate care and response to the injured and ill, within Sandy Pines.

Congratulations goes to the Ranger staff, who continue to train, to better serve the members and guests of our Park.

Inspector Newsby Ralph Smith

Well, here we are…ready to get back to the place we all love to call our summer home! I will be back on my regular hours beginning April 15th. Can’t wait to see everyone again.

One thing that I would like everyone to keep in mind, is the magical date of June 1st. That is when we all need to have our lots cleaned. This means leaves removed, dirty trailers need to be washed, sheds, porches and clutter on your site, all need to be taken care of by this date. Remember…if your lot is not cleaned by the June 1st deadline, and we need to have it done for you, you will be charged for the cost of the clean-up, plus an automatic $100 ne.

Another thing I would like you to look at is the green area by you. If you are using it as a storage area, you must remove your items from those spaces. Green areas are for all to enjoy.

Please feel to get in touch with me at [email protected], or call me at 616-896-7286, with any questions or concerns you may have.

Looking forward to another great summer at Sandy Pines! See you all soon!

Country Café and Country Store Newsby Craig Van Noord

As of this writing, we have had several days of sunshine and 40 degree+ temperatures here at Sandy Pines. Winter is fading fast. We, at the Cafe and Store, are looking forward to seeing you all again and hearing about the adventures and events that you all had over the winter.

Weather providing; we plan to have the Cafe open Saturday and Sunday, April 18 and 19, and again on Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26. The store will be open during Cafe hours, and more, depending on how active the Park is.

We have some new menu items planned for the Cafe, so come in and check them out. We are stocking the store as well. There will be items from Byron Meats again this year. We added several salad choices from Dutch Treat at the end of last season, and plan on continuing to carry those. We are always adding new items, so come in and see what’s new, and let us know what you would like to have available.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon. Stay Safe.

Technology Committee Newsby Jon Novakowski

Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, spring is here. The Sandy Pines season pregame warmup is in full swing, with some great updates to share.

Cable internet – Same lightning fast 60MB service as last year, for a whole bunch less. This season’s price is $192 that is $78 less than last year.

HBO has just announced a $14.99 streaming service. Now, a stand-alone, unbundled subscription streaming service is available exclusively on Apple products. For $14.99 per month, HBO Now subscribers will get full access to HBO’s full catalogue of past and current TV shows, as well as any movies available on its streaming service at a given time. The content will be streamable on any Apple device, including iPads, iPhones, and Apple TVs.

The cable TV line up is just about ready to be released. As soon as we have the new line up we will post it.

Our Sandy Pines TV channels broadcasting equipment will be installed before the end of the month, and we are working very hard to bring you some of our very own stations. “Stay Tuned.”

The ber has been installed at the Administration Building and we are now working on getting the ber to the Main Gate, to connect the two facilities.

We have started to interconnect the park facilities with a backhaul system to give better controls over the environmental, security, and to create wireless hot spots.

We are continuing to try to get a cell tower installed. We have led all the necessary paperwork and the surveys have been done. Now, we just need some of the phone companies to get onboard with it.

Some items we are currently working on: Charter phone system offering; better free WIFI in the common areas (pools, lounges, CC’s); DVR systems that will work with our current system; Updating and interconnecting the camera system throughout the park; New, improved website with more features and functions; and Uber service (just kidding)!

If you are interested in being on the Technology Committee, we are interested in having you join us. This year’s meetings will be held virtually, so all you need is a telephone to go to the meetings!

Park and Garden Newsby Jack Schmidt

The month we have all been waiting for is nally here. In a few short weeks, Sandy Pines will be alive with members and activities, once again.

The Park and Garden will again be open for your landscape, RV, Hardware and Rental needs. If you didn’t notice in our past articles, we have added more golf carts this year to help take care of your needs. When you are having those extra visitors for a weekend, please consider renting from the Park and Garden. We have four – six passenger carts this year and 40 – four passenger carts.

We added Kayaks last year and have four of them for your enjoyment on the lake. We also have rowboats available.

You should have received information from Park and Garden recently about the Water Softener program that we have had for the past four years. Still no increase in price. If you haven’t conrmed your order to have a softener installed, please contact the Park and Garden. Either call us at 616-896-9334, or email us at [email protected] to let us know. We will attempt to have the softener at your site or ready for pick up when you return.

We are adding several new items in the store this year, so stop by the Park and Garden and see what we have to offer. If we don’t have it, we will try to get it for you.

Outreach Committee Newsby Kel Kronemeyer

Thank you to all who have gotten excited about our “MEMBER SINCE” signs. We will be placing group orders when we have at least 50 or more. If you have ideas for a custom order, please speak to me. If you prefer a more immediate delivery, and don’t mind paying a little extra, that can be arranged.

Several of our members have caught the vision of giving the sign as a gift for a special occasion.

Pictured, is a prototype for a license plate sign for your car or golf cart, which will be generic and available for purchase this season.

Grounds & Landscape Manager Updateby Nels Bouma

This morning, the temperature is -5, and it is too cold to do anything outside…even Ice Fishing, so I thought I would write my rst spring article. We got a lot done last fall and now we can begin the 2015 season!

The next phase of rental sites will be completed with 15 new picnic tables and re pits throughout the Park. New parking pads for camping trailers and motor homes will also be installed. We will then have 34 of the 56 rental lots updated and ready for our guests. We have two more years to complete this project.

A lot has been done to improve Phase 3. New electric, water and cable have been completed in six of the sites, each with a new Crimson King Maple tree planted. The brush along the roads has been trimmed back so motor homes and 5th wheels will have easier access to their camping sites.

CC #13 in Phase 6 will have the landscaping completed this spring.

The Memorial Tree area is more uniform now and we will be putting stakes in, so members can choose where they would like to have a Memorial Tree planted, according to Park requirements.

Most of the ‘circles’ are cared for by the members in their own areas. If you need mulch or stone this spring, please call me to get approval for purchase.

Our CC gardens are cared for by volunteers from the Garden Club. If you need owers, be sure to call me at 616-644-4691. Mulch will be sprayed in before Memorial Day.

The Maintenance staff built a new trailer from what was in the maintenance yard, so you won’t see the little truck with a red trailer behind it this summer.

Please remember to take your leaves to the designated area at the leaf dump across the street from the Ranger’s Station. Smoke Detectors & Available exits:Please remember to replace your smoke detector batteries and carbon monoxide detector batteries. Dog Park Newsby Bill & Joanne VanderWall

Welcome back to Sandy Pines – to all of our members–both old and new!

We would like to tell you about our Dog Park. It is located in Phase 6, behind the bathroom. It is a fenced in area for your pet to run and enjoy themselves, in a shady area. There is water for them to get a drink, with a bench and table in the shade for you to sit, while they play. There are baggies for you to pick up after your pet, and a pail to dispose of it.

Keeping your dog exercised and content, will keep your neighbors happy too.

thunderstorms is occurring - such as high winds, lightning, hail, sleet and ooding.

Tornado Watch: Atmospheric conditions exist that could permit the creation of a tornado.

Tornado Warning: A tornado warning means that a tornado has been sighted or detected on radar. Tornados often, but not always, occur in conjunction with a severe thunderstorm.

Early warning preparation suggestions:Be aware of changing weather conditions and weather forecasts. Listen to local radio and television stations. Purchase a NOAA weather radio. These commonly have a weather alert tone that activates when watches or threatening weather approaches. These will alert you to changing conditions, and wake you as you sleep. Be prepared for electrical outages, with ashlights and spare batteries. Try to refrain from using candles, which are a major cause of house res. Remember that trees may block roadways after a storm and stay away from damaged electrical boxes and downed power lines.

Membership Cards:New Membership cards and Replacement cards may be purchased at the Ranger Station. Changes for your membership cards can also be made at the Ranger Station. The Golf Course requires membership cards with Photos in order for you to get free golf. Stop at the Ranger Station to get your new membership card with a photo if you have not already done so. Cost of a replacement card with a photo is $3. As of January, 2016, all membership cards will require photos. After the 2016 deadline, the cost to renew a membership card without a photo is $25/card.

Maintenance Updateby Ben Fifelski

I hope everyone had a good winter. I feel safe saying it now, that I’m pretty sure spring is nally here.

By the time you read this, CC#8 should be opened up. The snow has melted off the roofs and the sidewalks are safe to navigate now. Although the remodel has been completed, we will continue to close CC#8 for the off season, but will close it after October 15, and open it earlier in April, weather permitting.

We xed some leaks on the indoor pool and smoothed out the pool bottom. As it looks right now, the water will be turned on the week of April 13. So far, the weather is cooperating, but we all know that could change.

There’s always a lot of work for us to do in the spring, so we will be very busy.

There were some repairs done at the Core CC this winter. We’re waiting to pour our sidewalks before we can open that CC back up. Thank you in advance for your patience, as we strive to do the best possible job for you.

We look forward to seeing you all again – Welcome Back!

Florida Winter Gathering Recapby Marc and Jan Yats

The Florida Winter 2015 gathering was a huge success again this year. We had 70 excited folks show up for an afternoon at Miller’s Dutch Kitchen in Bradenton, FL. What a great time we all had catching up with our Sandy Pines friends about what we had been doing since we left the Park last fall. There was so much to catch up on, that after nishing our meal, folks continued to talk for over an hour. Hopefully next year we can get more of our fellow Sandy Piners’ to the 2016 Reunion.

Those in attendance enjoyed great conversation, some nice give-a-ways, and good food. We are now looking forward to another wonderful season at Sandy Pines. See you all soon!
