in his long leather trench coat and designer suit, Gamroni was greeted by shop owners, security guards, police offi cers and even by some shoppers.

“Hello Mr Sandton,” said a young girl.

“Hi Mr Sandton, good to see you” said a shop owner.”

“Look! It’s Mr Sandton, how are you my friend?” asked a policeman.

Gamroni’s explanation in this regard was simple,

“Sandton City, Nelson Mandela Square and now Legacy Corner have become part of my daily routine for the past 10 years. I eat at the best restaurants, read, and do all my shopping here because I love the class and atmosphere.”

Head of mall security Paul Dibate said, “We all know Mr Sandton. We appreciate his presence as he is a good customer, and we have never had any problems with him.”

Born in Morocco, Gamroni was an ex-jewellery consultant who completed his studies in France and Russia.

He has worked and lived in many countries but considers South

Africa his home.He was inspired by the late

Moroccan King Hassan II, whowas always dressed by top French designers.

Gamroni was not only well known at the Sandton mall but inthe nearby townships of Alexandra, Tembisa and Diepsloot because of his many charitable contributions.�[email protected]

Three armed men got out and forced her to remove her keys from the ignition. They opened the boot and stole a laptop, camera and cellphones.Woodmead: On 28 June at 8.05am a vehicle was stolen from the Woodmead Offi ce Park. A white VW Polo was allegedly used to enter the premises to commit

the crime.

CHRONICLE REPORTERNOMINATIONS for the third annual Centrum Guardian Project (CGP) are now open.

The CGP initiative acknowledges and celebrates acts of bravery and selfl essness that the men and women in the Emergency Services demonstrate every day.

The participants in this national campaign include the Department of Health’s National Committee on Emergency Medical Services, the National Sea Rescue Institute, SA Red Cross Air Mercy Service, the

Institution of Fire Engineers and the Southern African Emergency Services Institute.

The 2009 CGP winner was Mlungiseleli Ciko, Firefi ghter and shift commander for Fire and Emergency Services in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

As a result of the overwhelming amount of public votes, Ciko received a cash prize and his base station received R30 000.

The station used the money to purchase a fl at screen TV and DVD player and gym equipment,

and treated members of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro EMS to a braai.

A woman was watching the big screen TV at the public viewing area at JB’s Corner, when two women stole her handbag and left the scene with two men.

After reporting the incident

to security, the footage from the scene of the crime was rewound. The suspects were shown stealing the handbag and making their way to a secluded place where the contents of the bag were emptied and the bag dumped.

The suspects were later arrested by security and Norwood police.�[email protected]

STUART DICKINSONFOLLOWING the article warning residents about the shady dealings of numerous building material companies run by the same individuals, more victims have come forward.

These companies bait residents across the northern suburbs to pay money up front for very cheap construction materials, which are never delivered.

And it appears the fraudsters create new companies every two weeks, using different aliases and great deals to catch customers fl at-footed. Many ads are posted on Gumtree.

New reports include that of resident Ursula Armitage, who said she was scammed by a company called Matcon for just over R1000 for goods, but all she received were lame-duck excuses.

The alias used in this case was Robyn Matthews. But the Chronicle noted that the account details on the Matcon invoice matched those on invoices issued by SA Building Supplies, another fraudulent company run by ‘Robyn Schmidt’ and ‘Pam Rennie’.

Local company Build Supplies was also caught by the fraudsters. “We lost R32 840,” said company partner Amanda Steyn. “We dealt with a ‘Robyn Jenkins’ of DIY Plus, who went through us to buy materials for delivery to another customer they scammed.”

Steyn asked Jenkins to pay a deposit for the materials, but she forged the proof of payment and kept the materials. Jenkins then asked customer Karin Jensen to pay a deposit of about R25 000, but never delivered the goods.

“People like this break down the name of honest supply businesses,” said Steyn. “Because we are a cash business, we will need customers to pay a deposit. And this is why it is so easy for these criminals.

“They can just create registration details to make their company seem credible, and the man on the street won’t know the difference. We work our butts off, and they get away with doing nothing.”

Again, the culprits could not be reached for comment. So far, the Chronicle knows of over 12 people who have been scammed. �[email protected]

Shady business booming

Smile, you’re on camera... The woman on the right is behind a number of fraudulent business deals across the northern suburbs. She was caught on CCTV footage at the UN offi ces in Sunninghill after collecting payment for building materials which were never delivered. She drove away in a silver Hyundai Getz, registration WJT968GP.

IN PURSUIT of justice, Steyn made a case with the Johannesburg Commercial Branch of the SA police, where Captain Barries Barnard took over the case.

Barnard said it was only a matter of time before the fraudster was caught. “We have her address, but before I can make an arrest we need to investigate. I need to apply for

section 205s in order to trace where the money is going, and trace details through her bank. We’re also very busy with the World Cup at the moment, so after 13 July things will return to normal and I can put my time into this.”

Barnard encouraged those scammed to contact him via e-mail to strengthen the case.

WHEN people are employed to do a job, they must do just that.

The stakes are even higher if the employees in question have millions of ratepaying residents as their bosses. But sadly that’s not the case in the City of Johannesburg.

A classic example is Johannesburg Roads Agency spokesman Thulani Makhubela, who fl atly refused to talk about potholes, saying ‘the issue has been dealt with already in Joburg’.

Perhaps our good friend should be forgiven, as most of the roads around the city centre where his offi ce and those of other municipal departments are based, were resurfaced as part of work on the Rea Vaya infrastructure.

If Makhubela was a star performer of the week, his Joburg Water colleague Baldwin Matsimela took

top honours.Despite being informed of and

having commented on water cuts in Craigavon in the past, the spin doctor denied any knowledge of

such a complaint. But this is the same

man who, a few weeks ago, said the matter had been referred to the commercial loss section for investigation, as underground water was believed to be the problem.

Seemingly, our learned friends are enjoying the 2010 Fifa World Cup™ so much they forgot their duties and the happenings across their city.

If that’s the case, the sooner 11 July comes and the football feast ends the better, in order for the likes of Makhubela and Matsimela to regain their sanity.�[email protected]

Phishing scams are designed by criminals to divest you of your banking details to empty your account.

The very offi cial looking e-mail tells you money is in your account and provides a link to lead you to a webpage containing links to South

Africa’s four major banks. A link leads to your bank’s apparent log-in page and any information entered here will be used by the scammers to empty your account.

No bank, or Sars, will ever send you an e-mail requesting you to update or confi rm your details. Beware of e-mails that ask for personal, tax, banking and e-Filing details.

Eskom’s free self-exchange roll-out, which runs until end July, gives participating suburbs the opportunity to exchange up to 20 incandescent bulbs. This will result in an estimated saving of up to R1,690 on annual electricity bills and a total energy saving of up to 7.84kWh per day or 2861.6kWh per annum per household.

Residents are urged to make the effort to ‘switch and save’ by visiting their local temporary self-exchange point, bringing with them their ID documents and proof of residence.

No more parking, pleaseNATASHIA BEARAMEMPLOYEES in Sandton were left frustrated when parking rules were suddenly changed for no apparent reason.

Norwich Close is a little road that leads to a business park. For over a year, employees have parked alongside the road but, without warning, Metro police arrived and started handing out fi nes.

Mark Carle was one of the disgruntled motorists who insisted there were no clear warnings or demarcations to alert them to the sudden change being enforced by Metro

police. He said, “There is a ‘no parking’ sign and a

red line at the beginning of the street, but not all the way down.”

Carle had an argument with the Metro offi cer issuing the tickets and said it emerged that the boss of one of the companies in the area had asked the Metro police to fi ne everyone parking along the street.

Edna Mamonyane, spokesman for Metro police, explained, “If there is a parking infringement on a public road, or if the free fl ow of traffi c is obscured in any way, anyone

affected may alert the police and have them enforce the relevant parking laws, even if these laws weren’t previously enforced.”

According to Mamonyane, should you be served with a parking notice you deem unfair or seek to dispute, you have the right to fi ght this in court upon receiving a summons.

In the case of Norwich Close, Mamonyane has told the Chronicle that further investigations would have to be conducted into the signage prevalent in the area before any conclusion is reached. �[email protected]

Where have the cars gone?... Norwich Close used to have cars parked along the road, but now stands empty after a Metro police blitz.

KATE HENRYA MONTH after the Gautrain streaked into our lives at a decent 160km/h, it is becoming a household name.

At Sandton Station during afternoon peak hour it didn’t take long to fi nd the main entrance, where eager customer service agents waited to assist.

Once the Gautrain card was in hand, loaded with enough money for parking plus a round trip to Rhodesfi eld, it was down to the platform where Francis Lepitikoe was waiting for his fi rst trip. “I need to be in Kempton Park by 5.30pm and my friends said this would be the quickest way.”

Four minutes later at 5pm, the train arrived.

Theresa Edwards, a regular commuter since Gautrain’s inauguration, said, “I spent an hour and a half every morning and afternoon in traffi c. I don’t miss that! I’ve stopped taking my car to

the station. I walk from home to Rhodesfi eld and from the Sandton station to my offi ce. I love it.”

Minutes later, the train arrived in Marlboro to the astonishment of Lepitikoe, “That was so quick! If I want to go to Sandton I drive from home in Bernado Park to Kempton Park, leave my car at my sister’s house, wait for a taxi to Alex, and transfer in another taxi to Sandton. If I was going home by taxi today, I’d still be at the rank waiting.”

With the average taxi trip costing R17, compared to the Gautrain’s R21, he was sold well before we arrived in Rhodesfi eld at 5.10pm.

On the way back, passengers Clive and Lynne Parks, who had just arrived from Durban, said it was fantastic. “Terrifi c!” said Clive. “We’re so impressed not just with the Gautrain but everything. South Africa has done us proud!”

How many people have used the Gautrain so far? During the fi rst 20 days we had about 255 000 passengers.

We have had an average of 10 000 passengers a day during weekdays and 20 000 a day on weekends. The support has been overwhelming, far more than we initially expected. Some of it has been due to World Cup demand, but there is also a huge demand from Gauteng commuters.

The Gautrain buses look empty, why is that?The uptake of the bus service has been slow, but is gradually increasing. We will be launching a high-profi le campaign that specifi cally focuses on this bus service.

Will Gautrain extend its operating hours, particularly along the airport route?The initial operating times between 5.30am and 8.30pm will be subject to review at a later stage. The Gautrain Management Agency has also indicated it is aware of the need for extended operating hours.

Will the price structure remain the same? The Gautrain fare structure will be subject to review at a later stage and fares will be periodically adjusted.

Billing fiascoNIE CELETHOUSANDS of Joburg residents are up in arms over inaccurate interim meter readings and late receipt of accounts for rates and taxes.

This has occurred for the past eight months without notifi cation or explanation from the authorities. Affected residents received letters of notifi cation and apology only last week. City council said delays were due to the roll-out of Project Phakama, a new multi-million rand IT system aimed at improving revenue management, standardising practices and providing a one-stop shop for customers.

According to Kgamanyane Maphologela, deputy director of customer communications at city council, “Processes are also being introduced to ensure solutions to customers’ problems. Implementation of the initiative was taking place in phases, to minimise possible snags.”

But Democratic Alliance councillor John Mendelsohn disagreed and said the project was piloted unsuccessfully in the West Rand in 2009.

“The real problem is that this system should have been rolled out before the implementation of the Municipality Rates Act in July 2008. It also gives account holders inaccurate interim meter readings.

“No one from city council knows where the problem lies. Some say it’s technical, others say it might be a staffi ng and training problem, but the fact is there is a combination of challenges posed by this new system.”

Rissik Street post office fire saga still raging onNIE CELEA REPAIR order for the old Rissik Street post offi ce building is causing a war of words in the provincial legislature.

This document is believed to have been issued by the Provincial Heritage Resources Agency, compelling authorities to rebuild the post offi ce after it was gutted by fi re late last year.

There were also fears that the building might be demolished. Mike Moriarty, DA Finance spokesman said a repair order was issued by the agency, compelling authorities to rebuild the property, but government was dragging its feet. “In May, I asked for a copy of the order from Nelisiwe Moerane, MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation but was told I needed to obtain the document from the Speaker Lindiwe Maseko’s offi ce,” said Moriarty.

“This is extraordinary. Why can’t she just give me a copy? It is quite plain that the building is being neglected in the hope it will decay further. But the fact remains a repair order has been issued. Failure to give effect to the repairs is a defi ance of this order.”

Moriarty said he was also advised that a new opinion was sought about the ‘structural soundness’ of the building.

“What was wrong with the old opinion? Why a new one?” asked Moriarty.

But Mzi Khumalo, the Speaker’s personal assistant denied anything underhand. “The DA must just wait for the order to reach the Speaker’s offi ce.”

Helpline launched for sex workersKATE HENRYA NATIONAL toll-free sex workers hotline is now up and running.

Launched by the Sex Worker Education and Advocacy Taskforce (Sweat) and Sisonke Sex Worker Movement, Eric Harper of Sweat explained that it came about in response to a call by sex workers.

“We initially shunned away from the idea as it is a huge undertaking. With the increase in police harassment and more sex workers having to work in isolated conditions without feeling they have recourse to justice, we thought we had to take this bold step.”

The helpline will initially run from 9am to 5pm.

Trained peer counsellors will offer a confi dential counselling service staffed by peer counsellors trained to provide advice and information on issues such as sexual health, human rights abuses, employment conditions, emotional issues and drug and alcohol concerns.

Depending on the person on

call, languages offered include Xhosa, Zulu, Tswana, English, Afrikaans and Shona.

Harper said, “A core dimension of sex work is about secrets. Sex workers get exposed to a ‘secret’ dimension of society that people don’t want to acknowledge or talk about.

“So the sex worker absorbs many things, much like a therapist or social worker, but unlike the therapist or social worker there is nobody to talk to.”

The helpline has already been subject to abusive calls.

“Sadly people think they have the right to be abusive when it comes to sex workers,” said Harper.

“It took humanity a long time to appreciate that racial or gender hatred was not acceptable. It seems it will take even longer for people to realise that as long as you accept violence against sex workers you accept violence against women.”

Surge in demand for space close to GautrainCHRONICLE REPORTERAS THE Gautrain development gains momentum, so does the demand for commercial space in the close vicinity of the stations.

According to Lia Pauley, leasing and sales broker for property services company JHI, this trend is already evident near the Sandton and Rosebank stations.

She said, “We’re seeing a surge in interest and enquiries from local and international corporate tenants wishing to relocate to the CBDs of both areas.”

A prerequisite is being in close proximity to the Gautrain stations, followed by a preference for ‘green’ buildings.

“This reveals that prospective tenants know that by being in these hubs they are within easy reach of hotels, shops and residences.

The shift in tenants and businesses seeking ‘green buildings’ refl ects a growing awareness of the green council ratings and a desire to benefi t, in the long-term, from realistic rentals and reduced service charges.”

Existing and new retail developments near the stations are likely to enjoy increased trade as commuters have the convenience of being able to purchase goods en route to their destinations,

particularly with the proposed new tolls set to be imposed on commuters.

Pauley said in Sandton the demand was mainly in the rental market, with gross rentals, which include operating costs, rates and taxes, somewhere between R120 and R171 per square metre for A grade space and about R80 to R100 for B grade premises.

Investors also showed an appetite for the acquisition of land or buildings for redevelopment.

“Sandton remains the fi nancial hub of Joburg and still has room for development, particularly in the sectional title offi ce unit sector and in offi ce blocks where owner-occupiers can refl ect their own identity,” she concluded.�[email protected]

Rats and cockroachesJacqui Thompson writes:I ENJOYED your article on Sandton City shoppers smell a rat.

Firstly I don’t understand what all the fuss is about!

The bubonic plague was over several hundreds of years ago yet we still react to the sight of a rat or a mouse like it is the end of the world. Relax people.

They are just trying to eek (or should that be squeak) out a living too. I was enjoying a salad at a coffee shop when a cockroach popped out and sat on the edge of the bowl looking up at me. I called the waiter

over who said ‘Oh, sh*t’ and took the salad and cockroach away. None of them (even the waiter) was seen again.

A few months later I was enjoying music on the square. My chocolate milkshake had a lump in it which I bit into half thinking it was a piece of chocolate… hmm it was a cockroach. The manageress was very apologetic but also furious, saying Sandton City had a pest problem for ages and nothing was being done.

Me personally, I’m happy to share my space with a mouse or a rat but

I’m not too keen on cockroaches. Cockroaches to me mean food

prep areas that are not cleaned properly or food left lying out and about. So humans, clean up properly. Get cats to keep the rodents in check. They are effi cient, determined (no Pampers makes them super keen hunters) and less toxic than environmentally destructive chemicals. And less brutal than medieval traps that break their necks and leave them twitching for days.

We were initially nervous when we heard there would be a fan-park on our doorstep. Our apprehension has turned to admiration.

The fan-park has been incredibly well managed and there has been minimal disruption. In fact, it has been convenient and fun having the fan park in walking distance. The constant spirit and soccer enthusiasm has been infectious.

Well done to Fifa for coordinating the best fan-park in Johannesburg!

There is one soccer issue which I fi nd surprising, namely the non-utilisation of technology during the games. On several occasions

there have been confusing or controversial decisions regarding goals, penalties or possible fouls by players. The referee cannot be everywhere and see everything.

In rugby the ref will refer via headphones to the referees in the viewing rooms, who have access to slow-motion replays.

Reliance on technology in this day and age is quite acceptable.

There have been several instances during this World Cup where spectators have witnessed blatantly incorrect decisions on slow-motion replays.

Glaring examples include red-carding the Bafana goalie who, as evident on replay, was well within his goal area. The opposition player

who screamed foul was clearly offside, and the controversial English goal which clearly crossed the goal line should have been awarded.

The outcome of these matches may have been the same despite the unfair decisions, but they certainly upset the morale of the teams.

I am surprised Fifa does not utilise the technological resources available to ensure such controversial decisions do not happen.

Aside from reliance on judges with access to TV replays, I am sure it must be possible to have sensor-pads on the inside of the goal area to confi rm whether the ball is in when a goal is scored?

Proper legislation neededM Greenfi eld writes:THE by-law limiting the number of dogs and cats in a household will do absolutely nothing to prevent animal abuse.

It will not stop backyard breeders, horrifi c puppy mills or the sale of sick and under-age puppies and kittens.

It will not stop the illegal trade in exotic pets nor the fi lthy conditions in which animals are transported.

It will not stop depraved people from infl icting harm on defenceless creatures.

It will not stop fi reworks, or encourage sterilisation and responsible ownership.

Cruelty knows no number. People have to be educated

and the Animals Protection Act upgraded so it can serve the purpose for which it was intended.

I suggest individuals who support the by-law visit their local SPCA and hold a healthy, friendly animal that is to be euthanised because of lack of space, before they speak of the asinine idea of giving up ‘extra’ pets to the SPCA.

Many people have multi-pet

homes, where a vast majority of animals have been given a second chance.

If one applies for a permit and it is turned down, what then?

Does one now have to select which pet stays and which equally beloved pet must be given up to an uncertain future?

What happens if malicious neighbours make unfounded accusations about ‘offensive’ pets next door?

Who benefi ts from the money raised from permits?

No animals, I bet.This law seems to target

people who care enough to open their hearts and homes fully to abandoned pets but ignores people who really do cause damage.

I call on people who actually care to adopt a homeless dog or cat from the local animal shelter.

I call on the NSPCA, animal organisations and members of the public to protest against this thoughtless, unnecessary and unconstitutional by-law and to lobby for legislation that protects people and animals.

Pet by-law not end of the worldCouncillor Darren Bergman writes:I HAVE received several panicked phone calls from residents about Joburg’s new pet by-law.

Some people are planning drastic actions like giving up their pets and others want to put their pets down.

This was not the intention of the law. As usual, city council’s mishmash has led to terrible confusion.

People are supposed to collect documents from their regional offi ces, and the forms and other documents naturally aren’t available. What a surprise!

Here are the facts as laid out in the pet by-law.

Residents may keep two dogs and two cats in a fl at.

Up to four dogs and four cats in a house, and six of each per small holding.

If you would like to have

more, or already have more, please apply for a permit.

It costs R495 once off. Please don’t do anything

heartbreaking by taking your pets to the SPCA or having them put down. That is not the

intention of the by-law.

It is intended to protect those animals which are abused and exploited in, for instance, puppy mills or dog fi ghting. Like most

legislation it takes time to come into effect and there is a small window of grace.

Please don’t abuse this, get your pet registered as soon as possible.

The Democratic Alliance is also pressing for an extension of the registration period and would like city council to communicate with residents more clearly, particularly about something so emotional.

What about all the millions of pet owners in the townships?

They get free medical assistance from the SPCA, food gets donated as do veterinary services etc. But they won’t register them, as this costs

It looks to me that this country doesn’t want to have any animals, especially helpless dogs and cats.

Millions of starving, abused dogs and cats live in townships.

They need love and a warm bed but so what?

However, thanks to Dr. Remo Lobetti from the Bryanston Veterinary Hospital who had our little feline angel back to good health, and dear Val for the warm jerseys she knitted, Arabella’s life has changed for the better.

Not only is Arabella healthy again but has been warm during the chilly winter days! To all the animal lovers out there, thank you for making a difference in an animal’s life. Val, on behalf of Arabella and all the doggies out there, thank you for being our Earth angel.

KATE HENRYPUT up TVs in the townships and they’ll get stolen.

That’s the warning Morningside’s Graeme Joffey received when he told people about his idea. Ignoring their pessimistic warnings, the Highveld Stereo radio sports presenter took his dream of providing the disadvantaged communities with free entertainment and ran with it.

Initially conceptualised by Cherie Eilertson of Platinum Planet Real Estate Group, Joffey was entranced by the idea. “We were talking about how it was all well and good having fan parks for the World Cup, but what about communities like Diepsloot. That’s when

the idea hit me. “However I didn’t just want to make it

a 2010 thing. I wanted this to be a way to really give back to the communities. We took a drive round Diepsloot and were impressed by the well-kept parks.”

With the help of Joburg City Parks and DSTV, his fi rst big plasma screen was put up in Diepsloot City Park in 2007. Without a proper power supply, they were forced to ran back and forth with diesel to keep the power running. Switching on at 2pm each day, the TV shows everything from cartoons to travel, education, music and sports programmes during the afternoon.

After roping in MTN, Township TV

was able to spread out even further. With electricity to power the free TVs and the channel switching now taking place automatically via satellite, it started appearing in Ivory Park, Eldorado Park, Diepkloof, Lenasia, Alexandra, Thokoza, Joubert Park and Orange Farm, even as far out as Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape.

Joffey is hoping to continue spreading Township TV and is always looking for help. “It would break my heart if for some reason we had to pull out. The free entertainment viewing areas have been adopted by the communities. This is their TV now.”

CHRONICLE REPORTERA TEAM of beauties from 13 countries, the current Miss World (Gibraltar’s Kaiane Aldorino) and about 300 community members took part in a walk at Joburg Zoo to help raise funds for a new seal enclosure.

The beauty queens from Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Slovakia, Paraguay, Mexico, Portugal, Brazil, South Korea and Ghana were in the country to support their soccer teams and act as brand ambassadors for Joburg.

They also visited the Tebogo home for handicapped children in Orange Farm, which received special beds, donated through the Miss World Pageant.

The zoo currently has no seals, perennial favourites for many years. Last year Sushi the seal died of old age. As seals are pack animals and need company, his 13-year-old partner Priscilla has been moved to the Hartebeespoort Aquarium until the enclosure can be rebuilt.

“The new pool will house at least six seals. It will cater for animal introduction and separation, required when they are sick, need medical checks or give birth.

“There will also be a marine education centre, amphitheatre and stage for public presentation, off-display holding, training facility and life support system, making it a state of the art display arena,” said Joburg Zoo spokesman Letta Madlala.

The seal enclosure will cost an estimated R10 million, which the zoo plans to raise over the next two to three years. Other fundraising initiatives included additional walks and approaches to corporates for sponsorship.

NATASHIA BEARAMSCHOOL may be out but Redhill high was abuzz when it played host to a Scrabble workshop hosted by 5FM.

A school Scrabble tournament will be held during July and the winners will be invited to play against local celebs on 14 August.

The benefi ciary of these events is Active Learning Libraries SA.

All proceeds of the tournaments go to toy libraries. Nicki Wiggett, organiser of the workshop said, “The idea is to get teens to start a scrabble club at school and from there they can enter national Scrabble competitions.” Gareth Cliff had this message for the youngsters in attendance, “With half of all university entrants illiterate in SA it is important to understand that improving your vocabulary can only make you a better and fuller person.”

HHP is a strong proponent of the Scrabble cause and encouraged everyone to get involved and have fun by claiming that ‘Playing Scrabble is über cool’. Garth Van Vliet of Scrabble SA said, “Scrabble is traditionally a game for older people and Scrabble SA would like to encourage the youth to participate as it is good for literacy logic.” All schools in Gauteng are invited to start their own Scrabble clubs. CHRONICLE REPORTERFIGHT Force is back, and will come out the corner swinging as it presents the latest Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) tournament on 15 July.

Fight Force Overload will see 30 ferocious fi ghters take to the cage at Randburg’s Walter Sisulu Hall over 15 action-packed bouts later this month. Top ranked fi ghters including Donavin Hawkey, Martin van Staden, Leon Mynhardt, Nico Squassero, Daniel Sinclair and Jeremy Scheepers will be looking to

prove their MMA mettle, and are no doubt training hard leading up to the event.

Several up-and-coming fi ghters from the Quantum Tribe stable under trainer Nathan Raath will also do battle, like Calvin Mawale, who is making his pro debut, as well as exciting amateur Dino Bertolis. Fourways fi ghter Brandon Dean will also take to the cage on the evening.

KATE HENRYTHINGS are hotting up at Bryanston Tennis Club.

The idea blossomed last year when Bradley Dore fi rst proposed the idea of running a master series fi nals, where players compete in a league before facing off in a series of fi nal matches.

David Meyerowitz explained, “You often fi nd groups of players don’t mix or top seeded players don’t play social games. Here we have regular social days where everyone plays and we’ve found the league table has brought an air of competitiveness to the club.”

With the league table, anyone can challenge up to two spots above their current position. And if the person challenged hums and haws? If they avoid or miss a challenge three times they forfeit the match.

New players are allowed to challenge anyone in the table, even the top ranked players, but should they lose they get tossed to the bottom of the rung where they must work their way up.

At the cut-off date, only the top 16 players will be eligible to enter the master series fi nal.

Dore, who won last year’s tournament, said, “Often you look at the strength of a fi eld and can guess who’ll win, but this year the competition is very strong. Anything can happen.”

The fi rst matches take place on 17 and 18 July, with the semi-fi nals and fi nals on 24 and 25 July. The public is welcome to watch.

About 13 teams from around the world competed in the amateur, fi ve-a-side Champ into the Arena football tournament at the Wanderers Club’s newly-built, state-of-the-art Astroturf courts.

The tournament, organised by KIA Motors, saw less-than-fancied countries collide in an attempt to become the best in one of the fastest-growing sports on the planet.

Teams participating were South Africa (‘A’ and ‘B’), Italy, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, China, Korea Republic, Germany, The Netherlands, England, France, Malaysia and Syria. Qualifi cation was achieved through an inter-continental knockout competition, with the top 11 teams making it to the fi nals. South Africa qualifi ed through the Africa zone, and was given the prerogative of having another team in the competition based on the fact that they hosted the tournament, a tricky and controversial rule. The tournament was a hotly contested affair, with tensions boiling over during the Italy-England match when both sides came to blows.

South Africa ‘A’, led by retired football star Edelbert Dinha, fared much better than their illustrious Bafana Bafana counterparts, making it to the fi nal where they were beaten by a talented Netherlands team on penalties.

The tournament takes place every four years, running concurrently with the Fifa World Cup™. The next competition will be held during the 2014 Fifa World Cup™ in Brazil.�[email protected]
