Annika & Friends Benefit
A Pro Gives BAck:
By Sallie W. Boyles
Having stepped away as a professional golfer in 2008, Annika has since pursued en-trepreneurial and philanthropic endeavors with the same work ethic, dedication, and spirit that drove her career. The ANNIKA Foundation, her nonprofit organization, “teaches children the importance of living a healthy, active lifestyle through fitness and nutrition, and offers aspiring junior golfers opportunities to pursue their dreams.”
As part of that initiative, Annika and her celebrity friends have teamed up with the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort to host an inaugural ANNIKA & Friends fund-raiser on May 12 and 13, 2012. Proceeds will support the implementation of SPARK—a nationally acclaimed physical education program that has served children for over twenty years—in Florida’s public schools. “My foundation chose the SPARK program because it is the leading physical education curriculum in the country,” says Annika. Selected Northwest Florida elementary schools in Okaloosa and Walton Counties will be among the first to benefit.
Over her sixteen-year professional
career that began in 1993, Annika
Sorenstam earned worldwide fame
as one of the best golfers in history. Along
with ninety victories and ten major champi-
onship titles, she also won the admiration of
fans and peers for her ethical and gracious
conduct on and off the fairway. Underscoring
those sentiments, the United States Golf
Association recently honored Annika with
the Bob Jones Award for her distinguished
sportsmanship in golf.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to assist the local community.”
“This is a wonderful opportunity to assist the local community,” says Annika. “SPARK will go into the schools that have the most need with principals and physical education instructors who are excited about implementing it. Our goal is to put SPARK in every school in Florida, like they are doing in North Carolina and Arkansas.” Explaining why such efforts are essential, she adds, “Physical educa-tion is disappearing in schools. Less than half of all schools offer PE today, which is alarming.”
Devoted to enlightening children about healthy living, Annika found another like-minded partner in Sandestin. “I want to inspire kids to be active,” she says. “Sandestin shares our passion for health and well-ness, as evidenced by the lifestyle you see here. With it being a first-class development with wonderful amenities, the resort is the ideal host for our event.”
Sandestin, likewise, recognizes the value of teaming up with the ANNIKA Foundation. “We are delighted to be associated with Annika, who has such a positive brand,” says Laurie Hobbs, Sandestin’s director of public relations and marketing communications. “This is an opportunity to host an important children’s cause while also show-casing our four championship golf courses, dining and entertainment venues, and Beach to Bay experience.”
The weekend tees off on Saturday evening with a wine tasting and hors d’oeuvres reception on the Elation Lawn at the Grand Sandestin Hotel. Wines featured are from the Annika and Wente Vineyards of Northern California, a relationship that reflects a commitment to winemaking. This year, in fact, a fifth generation of Wentes celebrates the family’s 125th year as vintners. Celebrities and sports stars plan to share a toast with Annika, who hosts the event. Dinner at the Grand Sandestin Hotel and a private draw party with a concert and dancing are to follow.
The big day of golf begins on Sunday morning with a Mother’s Day breakfast with Annika. From there, Annika and her celebrity friends will conduct a golf clinic at the Raven Golf Club Practice Facility, which will be followed by the pro-am tournament; the shotgun start time is set for 11:00 a.m. Twenty-six teams of four amateurs—each paired with a celebrity, LPGA player, PGA Tour player, or sports personality—will compete for exciting prizes as they play on the course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. A roster that includes a name-dropping list of actors, musicians, and professional athletes, some of whom are listed here, heightens the fun and excitement.
Alice Cooper, one of America’s most prominent and, according to Rolling Stone, “most beloved” heavy metal rock musicians, has
continued his success as a film actor, golfer, restaurateur, and radio DJ.
John O’Hurley, the actor best recognized for playing the role of J. Peterman on the NBC sitcom Seinfeld, is also known as the MC for the American Kennel Club’s National Dog Show for the past ten years and as the former host of the TV game show Family Feud.
Bode Miller, the most successful male American alpine ski racer and the only one to win five World Cup events in all five disciplines (slalom, giant slalom, super giant slalom, downhill, and combined), is an Olympic and World Championship gold medalist with more medals in the Winter Olympics than any other U.S. skier.
Alfonso Ribeiro, an actor remembered for his rich-kid role of Carlton Banks, the cousin of Will Smith’s character, in The Fresh Prince
of Bel-Air, also directed some episodes of Fresh Prince and later hosted the Game Show Network’s Catch 21.
Yani Tseng, a Taiwanese professional golfer on the U.S.-based LPGA Tour who is current-ly Number One in the Women’s World Golf Rankings, stands as the youngest player ever, male or female, to win five major champion-ships, earning her such titles as the LPGA’s Rookie of the Year in 2008 and Player of the Year in 2010 and 2011.
Nancy Lopez, the American professional golfer who won forty-eight LPGA Tour events with three major championships dur-ing her career, remains the only woman to earn LPGA Rookie of the Year, Player of the Year, and the Vare Trophy in the same season (1978). She was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1987.

Suzann Pettersen, a Norwegian professional golfer who plays on the U.S.-based LPGA Tour as well as the Ladies European Tour, was named Ladies European Tour Rookie of the Year in 2001, counts the LPGA Championship in 2007 among her fourteen professional wins, and is currently ranked Number Two in the Women’s World Golf Rankings.

After returning to the Raven Golf Club for an awards ceremony, players and VIPs will be guests of Fleming’s at Grand Boulevard for a reception. The festivities then continue with a public concert by Darius Rucker, another of Annika’s friends, along with other musicians at Grand Boulevard.

SANDESTINWINE FESTIVAL
By Sallie W. Boyles
SPRING 2012 | SANDESTIN LIVING | 19
In its twenty-sixth year, the Sandestin Wine Festi-val has flourished as an internationally respected, eagerly anticipated event. Participants include vintners and chefs from across the globe, and they, along with partners like Coastal Living magazine, create a buzz that spreads to wine lovers near and far.
“We continue to acquire new partners while maintaining our loyal following,” says Lanier Motes, special events manager for The Village of Baytowne Wharf at Sandestin, the festival’s primary venue. “The festival has certainly devel-oped a sense of community. People begin calling
us in August to learn when tickets are going on sale, and the same volunteers return to us annually. We all look forward to seeing old friends and tasting some-thing new.” In addition to ticket holders, who wear a wristband for the privilege of tasting, nondrinking friends and family members are also welcome to shop and mingle.
Both sophisticated and fun, the celebration of wine and food attracts a range of participants—from the serious collector to the newly curious—with offerings to please their varied palates and levels of interest. Presenting over seven hundred domestic and inter-national wines, the Grand Wine Tasting, held on two separate days, gives attendees the opportunity to sample every possible variety, many of which are poured by the vintners themselves. The same wines can also be purchased by the bottle during the festival at special savings, and many sell for under $20. To make each sip as sensational as it can be, festival organizers find new ways to enrich the event every year, and they are especially excited about their plans for 2012.
Although the festival itself takes place in April—from Thursday, April 26 through Saturday, April 29, 2012—the excitement officially begins
“The festival has certainly developed a sense of community ... We all look forward to seeing old friends and tasting something new.”
when the wines are judged in January. This year, the six hundred wines submitted for judging were grouped into sixty-seven catego-ries. Without seeing their labels, regional wine experts selected gold, silver, and bronze medalists for each classifica-tion, awarding the “Best of Show Red” to the 2009 Domaine La Garrigue Vacqueyras from the southern Rhône region of France, and giving the “Best of Show White” to the Sancerre La Crêle, a Sauvignon Blanc by Domaine Thomas & Fils in the Loire Valley, France. Released in April, the annual Tasters’ Guide—available online and distributed to festivalgoers—lists all wines by category with a legend that distinguishes the gold, silver, and bronze medallion winners along with the best value in each group.
“We have very knowledgeable wine judges,” says Chan Cox, founder of the Sandestin Wine Festival and owner of Chan’s Wine World. “The best always come out on top.” After judging, the public was invited to a Tasting of Champi-
ons, which featured the winners and paired them with gourmet
foods to sample.
The pairing of wine and food, a fes-tival theme, reflects the maturation
of America’s taste in wine. “Americans are more likely to look for a wine style that
complements food,” says Cox, adding that Califor-nia winemakers, in particular, are responding to the shift
in demand by changing their production processes. “They’re making fresher wines that are not over-oaked or so heavy in alcohol.” Interestingly, as consumption becomes less about cocktailing, the preference for sweeter wines is declining.

The 2012 Culinary Pavilion, open to all festi-valgoers, certainly allows tasters to experi-ment. Spotlighting Mediterranean cuisine, the main table features cassoulet. Chef Gary Serafin of Emerald Coast Catering will prepare the slow-cooked white bean and meat stew that originates from the Gascony region of southwestern France. Another anticipated attraction, the cheese table, offers Greek ma-nouri with orange blossom honey; Italian mozzarella with sliced tomatoes, basil, and vinaigrette; Spanish Rosey Goat with fig preserves; and French sheep’s milk Ossau-Iraty with crushed almonds. Other edible delicacies include prosciutto cotto and cornichons; a salad of lentils, olives, spinach, and tomatoes with balsamic; stuffed olives; sliced fig cakes.
“People are interested in elegant foods,” says Thibault. To satisfy their craving further, the festival has added cooking demonstrations by chefs who “represent the culinary history of this part of Florida.” Four masters will share their specialties, pairing each with wine, on the Coastal Living cooking stage:
• Johnny Earles, founder of Criolla’s, will prepare Scallops al Pil Pil with Valencia Cake, Almonds and Olives on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
• Irv Miller, executive chef of Jackson’s and considered an originator of “New Florida Cooking,” will prepare Tzatziki Pita Crisp and Thin-Sliced, Slow-Roasted Lamb Belly on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
• Jim Richard, proprietor, chef, and CEO of Stinky’s Fish Camp, will prepare Spanish Pa-ella on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
• Tim Creehan, chef-owner of Cuvee Bistro and the Great Events Center and creator of Grill Plus Instant Marinade, will pre-pare Creole-French Louisiana Crawfish Étouffée with Green Tomato Crisps and Steamed Rice on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
The entry for each show is $20 and limited to one hundred people.
Two important wine seminars are also on this year’s schedule. First, addressing an emerging
thirst for biodynamic wines, a top producer from Alsace will distinguish the myths from the realities of this method of growing with Amélie Buecher making a guest appearance. Attendees will take part in a wine tasting paired with cheeses. The second discussion investigates the 2009 Bordeaux—is it the
best vintage ever?—with a tasting paired with cheeses. Françoise Lannoye, owner of the Lannoye Estates and Vineyards near Bor-deaux, is the guest speaker. Reservations for both events are limited to thirty people.
Whether they participate in seminars or dem-onstrations, experts and novices alike are enriched by the wine, food, and people they meet at the festival. Furthermore, the spring-time temperatures are ideal for the resort’s other activities, inspiring many festivalgoers to extend their stay with friends and family.
“It would seem that you’d have to travel to the Mediterranean for such an experience,” says Cox, “but the Sandestin Wine Festival has it all.”
“This is a classy, efficient, well-done wine festival ... The wine dinners, wharf setting, and ancillary activities all make the weekend worthwhile.”
Correspondingly, one of the most highly anticipated happenings on the festival’s schedule are the winemakers’ dinners. Kicking off the festival on Thursday evening at Baytowne Wharf, local chefs and wineries team up to create special menus. When making reservations, diners can choose from a variety of cuisines and price points.
The epitome of fine wine dining, however, takes place on Friday evening, when Sandestin Wine Festival patrons gather at some of the most stunning private homes on the Emerald Coast for a feast of a lifetime. Each home has its own nation-ally renowned chef and world-class vintner, who produce a collaborative, multicourse meal with innovative cuisine plus wines from the vintner’s choice reserves. Granting such exclusive access to the world of wine and food, relished in the company of fellow wine enthusi-asts, the wine festival’s Patron Dinners are, perhaps, the social event of the season.
Patron tickets to private events plus the Grand Wine Tasting are available (for $2500 for two) through the Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation. In part-nership with the Sandestin Wine Festival, the Foundation serves carefully vetted, highly deserv-ing local children’s charities. Besides the exclusive wine dinners, the Destin Charity Wine Auction, in its seventh year, conducts a Reserve Tasting and Silent Auction for patrons only on Saturday afternoon. Internationally acclaimed vintners pour library wines that are paired with delicacies made by the area’s premier chefs. All the while, attendees place their bids on coveted auction items: distinctive wines, extraordinary trips for those with epicurean tastes, and one-of-a-kind treasures. The night culminates with a lively auction, musical enter-tainment, wine, and food.
New to this year’s festival, a VIP event—scheduled on Saturday and on Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.—uncorks rarely allocated wines not available at the Grand Tasting. “These are 98- and 99-rated wines,” notes
Cox. Among the celebrity vintners who will be on hand to share their personal insights are Cesar Perrin of Famille Perrin, Luis Burgueño of Marqués de Cáceres, Tom Burgess of Burgess Cellars, and Joy Sterling of Iron Horse Vineyards. In their company, participants will sip wines with a catered lunch that features a tasting menu provided by Marlin Grill. Tickets, available in limited qualities at $150 per person
per day, deliver the royal treatment, including valet parking. VIP guests are also welcome to join the walkabout
and take advantage of the Grand Wine Tasting at Baytowne Wharf.
A partner of this year’s festival, Michael Bryan, founder and execu-
tive director of the Atlanta Wine School, has offered his clients and newsletter subscribers who pur-chase general admission tickets the privilege of attending the VIP reception as his guest on a first-come, first-served basis. “This is a classy, efficient, well-
done wine festival,” says Bryan. “The wine dinners, wharf setting,
and ancillary activities all make the weekend worthwhile. You cannot
duplicate the coastal feeling, and with the caliber and quantity of wines, the Sand-
estin Wine Festival is on a very small list of its kind. I’ve walked away from the Grand Wine Tasting
having tried killer wines that people needed to know about.”
The desire to be in the know is, of course, a huge draw to the festival. Similarly, many argue that the best way to savor the flavors of wine and food is with a measure of understanding. “Wine cultures across the pond are more insular,” says Bryan, explaining that the art of pairing wine and foods is less complicated in other parts of the world, where flavors all come from the same region and naturally go together. “In Tuscany, you’ll be served a Pecorino cheese and unsalted bread with your Tuscan wine. When you’re in the States, the infinite food and wine choices become dizzying.” Educating students beyond what he calls “yum or yuck,” Bryan says, “What you learn about wine applies to anything gastronomic, and once you move past a stage of trial and error,
you gain a totally different dining experience.”
At the same time, Michel Thibault, director of sales and vice president of Chan’s Wine World, encourages flex-ibility. “Marriages are great when they are the same and when they are different,” he says, indicating that concerns about following rules should not interfere with one’s enjoyment of the festival—or wine and food in general.

HARBOR WALK VILLAGE • DESTIN COMMONS • MARKET SHOPS AT SANDESTIN
Luxury and quaintness are not often found together, but that’s just what Bill and Marilyn Chandler got when they bought their home at 3121 Merion Drive: a luxurious home in the quaintest of neighborhoods in Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.
Having moved from the beach after enduring the effects of Hurricanes Opal and Ivan, the Chandlers originally had no intention of buy-ing a home in Sandestin. However, after an off-chance meeting with a realtor who begged to show them the Merion Drive residence, the couple walked through three rooms in the 4,938-square-foot home before declaring, “Sign the contract!”—they hadn’t even seen the upstairs yet. They immediately bought the four-bedroom house from previous owner Chandler Huff of Huff Development, who had built the home for his own family. The Chandlers have now been living in the home on Merion Drive for six and a half years—a year and a half beyond their “five-year mark” of moving to a new house. And the reason for that? Location, location, location.

Merion Drive, located in the Burnt Pine subdivi-sion of Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, boasts some of the largest lots and most immaculately groomed yards in the development. Inhabited mainly by full-time residents—a feat for a beach community—Merion Drive is a quiet, quaint street complete with “Pleasantville” images reminiscent of yesteryear.
It is in this safe haven that the Chandlers’ home at 3121 Merion Drive is situated, framed by beautiful landscaping that draws the eye to the impressive residence. With an extraordinary sense of community, the residents of Merion Drive—young professionals, families, and retir-ees alike—partake in neighborhood parties and watching out for one another’s homes. Safety and serenity is valued here; when the Chandlers’ granddaughter wanted to learn how to ride a bicycle, she brought her new bike to Merion because the lack of traffic and the wide streets made her feel safer rolling on two wheels for the first time.
Inside the front door, a grand foyer is flanked on either side by the formal living and dining
rooms, both exquisitely decorated and com-plemented by travertine tile. Take a right, and you’ll find yourself in a large guest bedroom with a companion bath and a private screened porch that overlooks the home’s beautiful pool. (Actually, the home is built in a U-shape, allowing for two of the three screened porches to have a direct view of the swimming pool and the finely groomed backyard.)
Or, instead, take a left and follow the hallway past the bar and into the grand kitchen that overlooks an intimate family room. “The kitchen is a chef’s dream,” says Bill. With two separate refrigerators, a warming drawer, two ovens, and many other state-of-the-art appliances, it would seem that two separate meals could be prepared at any given time. “It’s my favorite room in the house,” says Marilyn. “And it’s Bill’s favorite, too—when I’m in it!”
The family room also has access to a large screened porch, one that features an outdoor kitchen and dining area—perfect for balmy summer nights or an afternoon pick-me-up

as 2011 came to a close, Sandestin real estate (Sre), the exclusive brokerage for Sandestin Golf and Beach resort, reported sales of 110 million dollars, well ahead of expectations. This boost in sales can be directly attributed to
Sandestin’s team of expert sales professionals, its
support staff, and its strong leadership making the
most of the current upward trend in the real estate
market along the Emerald Coast.
In February, 2011, the second Annual Sandestin Real
Estate Top Producer Awards dinner was held at Bistro
Bijoux in the Village at Baytowne Wharf. After cocktails
and happy hour in the private dining room, the entire
staff and their guests enjoyed the fine dining, from
hors d’oeuvres to dessert, offered by this exceptional
restaurant.
To close the evening, awards were presented by Joe
Bracciale, Broker and President of Sandestin Real
Estate. Karen Phillips received the Top Listing Agent
of the Year; Christine Thompson received the Top
Selling Agent of the Year - Sales units; and Jo Stewart
was awarded Realtor of the Year 2011 and Top Selling
Agent - Sales Volume.

“I am proud to be Sales Executive of the Year 2011,
much of my business was through client referrals and
for that I am especially grateful. The pundits said
2011 would still be a year of recovery for real estate in
Florida. The forecasters said we were still 18 months
away from turning the corner. They were all wrong.
We not only turned the corner in Sandestin we’re now
moving steadily in the other direction. Inventory is at
a five year low. Demand is up. Sales are improving.
As successful as I was in 2011, I believe 2012 will be
even better – for all of us.”
Christine Thompson, Realtor®850.428.0873 | [email protected]/ChristineThompson
“2011 was a great year for Realtors in Sandestin as we
watched the real estate market begin its slow climb back.
With inventory down it is even more important to un-
derstand the needs and desires of prospective buyers and
provide them with all the information necessary to help
them in their decision making process. I owe my success
to all the new Sandestin homeowners who chose to work
with me in 2011.”
Karen Phillips, Realtor®850.598.6440 | [email protected]/KarenPhillips
“Over the past 24 years I have been honored to work
with and help my clients find their piece of paradise in
Sandestin. Most of my listing business has come from
clients who purchase their first piece of property with
me and were ready for something new. My years of
experience and my love for the area has helped me to
achieve Top Listing Agent for 2011. I look forward to a
very busy and successful 2012.”
Many thanks to our customers who make our work a pleasure every day!

Every holiday season, Sandestin transforms into a winter wonderland! With exciting holiday activities for the whole family, December is a wonderful time to visit the area. For years, Sandestin’s nationally recognized pastry team has created a gin-gerbread house for the holidays, and it gets bigger and better every year. The 2011 gingerbread house, based on a “Santa’s Workshop” theme, was an estimated fourteen feet tall! Santa even made a few appearances in the area!
The Baytowne Wharf Beer Fest, a favorite of locals and visitors alike, is held every year in October. The “Best Beer Fest on the Emerald Coast,” as it is known, features more than a hundred domestic and international beers, forty craft brewers, beer samplings, seminars, and live music—all in the charming Village of Baytowne Wharf at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.
