Volume 29, Issue 7 July 2020

Love divine all loves excelling,

Joy of heaven to earth come down; Fix in us thy humble dwelling; All thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus thou art all compassion,

Pure, unbounded love thou art; Visit us with thy salvation;

Enter every trembling heart.

These words of Charles Wesley have inspired me for 43 years of ministry and I trust they will inspire you as well. There is no greater love than God’s love that came down to earth in Jesus. It is a faithful, compassionate, pure and unbounded love that has visited all of us. My prayer is that such love enter all of our hearts.

Well aware that one only gets one chance to make a first impression, the impression I seek to make is one of love.

It may seem difficult to do under the restrictions we begin our work, however, with Christ, all things are possible and as the Apostle Paul stated in 1 Corinthians 13:13, the greatest of all is love!

Over the next few months, I’ll be introducing more about Brenda, me, and our family. For now, the first impression I’d like to make is centered in and around love. A very good friend of mine, D. T. Thompson, made a speech in Raleigh at the Capitol on June 13, 2020. In that speech he called for brotherly love, relief, and truth. His rally cry was “Let’s show everybody what right looks like.”

Love looks right to me.

Brenda and I are looking forward to getting to know and love you, but more than anything else, we look forward to sharing the love of God with all. These changing, challenging, and difficult times are made better when we love God and love one another.

Let’s show everybody a love that is divine, all loves excelling. Let’s show everyone what right looks like.

Let’s show love!

I’m excited about coming to Seaside!

I am excited about the joy of heaven that came down to earth and how these days of our service together will reflect the pure, unbounded, love of God.

May our first impression be a lasting impression of divine love among all of us until God’s love and our love is found in every trembling heart!

Seaside UMM Annual Golf

Tournament Cancelled

The United Methodist Men have announced

that the annual golf tournament re-scheduled

for August 15 has been cancelled.

All golfers will be offered a full refund.

Sponsors and donors will be contacted and

refunds offered. Door prizes will be returned

to the donors.

Like most everything else, Holy Friends Small groups have been on hold during the Coronavirus pandemic. As we look to the possibility of moving to Phase 3, we are thinking about beginning to meet

again—possibly in July or early August. There are currently 10 Holy Friends groups with a new group that will begin to meet when members are comfortable. In addition, there are a few opportunities to join one of the existing groups. Dan and Sharon Derbyshire will be the facilitators for the new group. Holy Friends is a small group made up of 6-8 people who meet regularly—usually monthly. This new group will meet in the evening in the member’s homes. The format of the groups includes sharing a meal together, sharing a devotion, and sharing about yourself and your faith. Group members are becoming Holy Friends. These groups provide an opportunity to meet people from Seaside and build friendships with those whom you have not had an opportunity to meet in other settings. PLEASE NOTE: For Dan and Sharon’s group it will be necessary for you to be able to climb two flights of stairs. They do not have an elevator in their home. The existing group meets in the evening, following the same format mentioned above. There are no requirements for stairs at this home. If you are interested in either of these two groups, at your earliest convenience, please contact: Sue Amyx-Eggert- Holy FrIends Small Group Coordinator [email protected] or 317-752-4134

Seaside’s Calendar Has Been Cleared

As you work with your ministry team, plan to resume classes or

meetings, please contact Kathleen Thompson as soon as

possible to reschedule your 2020 meetings, etc.

With the uncertainty about each group’s plans, the

calendar has been cleared and Kathleen is starting from scratch.

Seaside Plan for Re-Gathering and Re-Opening Dear Seaside Family,

As you may be aware, three weeks ago the Board of Trustees of Seaside appointed a Covid Response Team (CRT) made up of individuals representing various areas of ministry within Seaside as well as the Pastors. This team has worked diligently to come up with a plan for Re-opening the Building and Re-gathering for Worship as well as protocols for how to keep our facilities as safe and clean as possible for all who enter the building.

On Monday evening, June 8, our Board of Trustees approved the plan as recommended by the CRT. This plan includes a timeline for re-engaging “in house” worship and other ministries as well as the expectations for all who use the facilities, classrooms and other spaces at Seaside. The following is a timeline for Re-opening and Re-gathering. The entire 16-Page document containing best practices and procedures is available on our website. Wednesday, July 1st: Church Cleaning

The church will have a deep disinfecting done by a professional cleaning company. We ask that NO ONE enter the building from July 1 - 4. NO EXCEPTIONS! Sunday, July 5th: Sanctuary Worship, 9 a.m. & 11 a.m. We will hold worship inside for the first time. The schedule of Contemporary and Traditional services at 9:00 a.m. & 11:00 a.m. will remain the same through the month of August, with that schedule being reconsidered towards the end of August. PLEASE NOTE: We have no intention of making this a permanent change. We hope to return to a three-service schedule as soon as it is possible, with the goal of Labor Day Weekend. We have several reasons for holding only two services during the summer, and they mostly relate to our ability to clean in between services. This would simply not be possible on a three-service schedule. We are also asking that all who come to the 9:00 a.m. service use the restrooms in the Office Hallway, and all who come to the 11:00 a.m. service use the Parlor Restroom as well as the Restrooms by the Choir Room entrance in the back hallways. We encourage continued social distancing as well as the use of masks. There will be signage to remind you of all of these things. Monday, July 6th: S.T.A.R.S Program Begins Our summer literacy program will be held for the month of July this year instead of the typical six weeks. Additionally, the afternoon enrichment piece of the program is being suspended this year. Monday, July 6th: Restricted Building Use By Permission Only Groups that need to hold meetings or studies in the church will be granted permission to utilize the church on an ap-proved basis only. PLEASE NOTE: The church offices will not yet be open. The doors will remain locked, and any approved group who needs entrance to the building will be let in by a staff member. Do not assume that because you had scheduled something on the church calendar months ago that your group is approved to meet. Indeed, the entire church calendar has been cleared and we are now rebuilding it based on new calendar requests that must go through Kathleen Thompson. Once the request is made, the meeting, class or event will require approval. After the approval, the person who made the request will then be contacted. Only then is the event, meeting or group “officially” on the church calendar. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes, but this is the best way to ensure that there are a limited number of groups in the building at the same time. Also note, the staff will continue to do most of their work from home and will hold meetings by appointment only. Monday, August 3rd: Church Offices Open Our church offices will reopen with the normal hours of Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The staff will be working with their doors closed and locked. This does not, however, mean that the staff is inaccessible. Rather, this allows the staff to feel comfortable working in their offices without masks on, and then anytime someone needs access to them, they can first put on their mask before letting someone into their office. This is for both the protection of the staff as well as the congregation.

We appreciate your continued patience and support as we navigate these uncharted waters. As already stated, please keep in mind that this proposed timeline is contingent upon the recommendations from the CDC, NCDHHS and the Bishop and could change at any time. If this timeline needs to be altered for any reason, we will inform the congregation immediately. Blessings, Seaside Covid Response Team ***The complete 17 page guide can be found on our website at www.seasideumc.org.

We need your input. The following was sent via email to all who receive the Thursday emails. If you have not responded to the on-line survey, please do so now. If you are unable

to respond to the on-line survey, please contact Kim at 315-729-6476 or Carolyn at 315-253-8107.

The Country Fair Steering Committee sends its well-wishes to ALL our Seaside friends. Almost everyone is asking about Country Fair. We cannot predict what the health situation will be like in the months leading up to the Fair. This makes planning difficult. The 2020 Country Fair is currently scheduled for Friday, October 23, 8:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, October 24, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with set up on the preceding Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. In order to plan, we need to know if our congregation has what it takes to carry it out.

Being mindful of the health and safety of our volunteers and visitors is the Number 1 priority. First, the Fair could be modified to be a smaller than normal event. It would not have all of the events that normally occur. This would keep the sales areas more open and make social distancing more effective. Another consideration would be to hold the Fair ONLY on one day, Saturday, October 24, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Signs would be posted around the church campus encouraging all to maintain social distancing and wear facial coverings. This cannot be enforced.

To get a sense of the number of volunteers needed to make this happen, we need your input. Your responses will help the Steering Committee makes plans. Your additional comments are welcomed as well. The survey will run for two weeks and then be closed for data analysis. The Steering Committee is looking to make a decision by the middle of August based on the data received. We thank you for your time and comments. Be well!

Choose ONE:

• Country Fair should not be held until 2021.

• Country Fair week should be as originally scheduled. Set up and Prep: October 20-22, with the Fair on October 23 (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) and October 24 (8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.)

• The Country Fair should be October 24, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with set up dates on October 21-23.

• At this time, I would commit to helping pre-Country Fair to set up tents, tables, display merchandise, etc.

• At this time, I will not commit to helping pre-Country Fair.

• At this time, I would work the actual day(s) of Country Fair interacting with customers, taking money, replenishing merchandise and other necessary tasks.

• At this time, I will not work the actual day(s) of Country Fair.

Monday, July 6—Friday, July 31 8:15 AM—1:45 PM Daily

Monday, July 6th Seaside will welcome our 2020 STARS Summer Literacy Program students. While the children will not

have the benefit of on-site afternoon enrichment activities, they will have activities to take home with them each day, most of

which they can learn from and enjoy with their families.

Thank you to all who offered to assist with the program this summer. In order to reduce risk, we have limited the number

of volunteers who will be involved. Volunteers will pick up food from West Brunswick High School Monday—Thursday, and

volunteers will assist the children during breakfast and lunch. We look forward to a more “normal” year in 2021 with many more

volunteer opportunities.

Please keep the students, their families, our teaching teams, volunteers and staff in your prayers during the month of

July, for the safety of all involved, God’s guidance as we make decisions, and for young minds that are ready to learn and prepare

for the upcoming school year.

"Lord, heal our land; Father, heal our land. Hear our cry and turn our nation back to You." Tom Fettke A beautiful anthem that you will hear on Sunday, July 5th as we honor this one nation under God and pray that we will turn back to Him to heal our land. We hope to be back in the sanctuary that Sunday and I hope you will feel comfortable joining us.

It has been hard to make many plans during this time of quarantine but please know that we are working on ideas and making plans for the future. We know that all of our plans can be changed in a heartbeat and we are learning to be really flexible! Change is all around us these days and we thank you for your prayers as we move forward into a new normal. Other than worship on Sundays, I am trying not to schedule anything in the building during July in order to keep everything clean for our STARS program. But we hope to have some things returning in August. Here's what we have planned: Wednesday, August 5th - Joyful Noise Children's Choir will try to wrap up their choir year with a fun afternoon ending in a program for their families and pizza for all! We wish we could include our congregation but I know you understand the restrictions and will pray for our day! Wednesday August 5th through Wednesday, August 26th we hope to be able to invite you to a time of Meditation and Praise Music in the sanctuary from Noon-12:45. We began as a church to spend time each Wednesday in prayer and this is an extension of that idea. Also, we missed 3 of the Lenten Meditations and this will be our chance to share those talents with you the congregation. Music will begin at Noon quietly but may build up to an ending of PRAISE! We ask you to come, police yourselves with space and wearing masks and enjoy a time of prayer, meditation and praise. Let's pray now that all of this will happen!!! We will continue through July and August to provide music as you enter and an anthem each Sunday but no choir. We miss our choir and miss singing for you and look forward to their return!! Continue to stay safe and keep us in your prayers! With a voice of singing, Kathryn

After almost 15 years as Assistant Director of Music for Contemporary Services, Lynn Enzor has decided to retire. Sunday, July 12th will be Lynn's last official service at 9:00 AM. Lynn began her musical career at the early age of 12, serving her church as an organist/pianist. Since then she has served many different churches and given her talents to many weddings, funerals, etc. Oh the stories she can tell! While at Seaside UMC, Lynn has been instrumental in establishing the Contemporary service and developing the wonderful Praise Team we enjoy. She has used her gifts of leadership

and music to enhance and lead us each week. During her tenure the Praise Team has presented concerts both in our church and in the community. While we will miss Lynn on a weekly basis, we have been assured that she will still be with us and, on occasion, play when needed! So, we say a special "Thank You" to Lynn and wish her well in the next steps of her journey. Godspeed, Lynn!

Seaside will be closed to everyone, including staff from Wednesday July 1 through Saturday,

July 4 for cleaning and disinfecting. As of this writing, in-person worship will resume at 9:00

AM on Sunday, July 5. Please check the re-gathering document on our website for more

information. Please note that there are “no exceptions” to the church closing. This is to insure

that the cleaning/disinfecting process is safe and effective. Thank you for your cooperation.
