DRESS
Blushing Brides
First it was Gwen Stefani in pop-art pink Vivienne Westwood. Th en came Reese Witherspoon in pale primrose from Monique Lhuillier (who is rumored to be sketching Jessica Biels gown for her summer nuptials to Justin Timberlake). Blushing brides are everywhereand theyre rocking more than the typical white. Bespoke bridal gowns in barely-there blushes from the likes of designers Vera Wang, Jenny Lee, and Angel Sanchez made a dazzling debut on the 2012 runways. All unveiled sartorial stunners with high-tint trimmingsthink fl urries of organza, fl oating silk crepe, and ballet-pink bolerosin the seasons hot-test shade. Th is subtle parade winked at pink from all angles and appeals to both conventional and slightly quirky summer
brides. Both aesthetic and ornamental, this fl irty, yet always appropriate hue nods to both mod and classic sensibilities and proff ers a decidedly feminine frame for A-line, Empire, Mermaid, Sheath, and Strapless silhouettes. Th is seasons couture covetables include the capped-sleeve Genevieve, with gold embroidery overlay in rose silk velvet from Claire Pettibone, and the equally sweet corseted Candy gown, a buzzed-about beauty featuring illusion strapless, embroidered tulle and modifi ed A-line skirt from Monique Lhuillier. A more accessible wow comes from Alita Graham, whose beaded, tulle-bedecked Princess/Ball gown is a fairy-tale come true. Haute pink, indeed!Jennifer Th ornton

FLOWERS
Desert Romance
The desert couldnt be hotter for summer nuptials. Now trending, Southwest-inspired bouquets curated with gorgeous, unexpected succulents that are a statement away from upstag-ing the brides who carry them. These exquisite arrangements, festooned with dainty, tie-on adornments (think pearl pins and shell clasps) offer femininity tempered by stylish bursts of earthdusty red, lusty rust and marigold orange. Even bet-ter? Contents for this tote couture can be sourced from local farms and our very own Delta harvest. Used in monochromat-ic greens, desert flowers are always sophisticated. But mixed with other earthly delights like feathers and seeded eucalyptus,
youll find a textured bouquet with considerable herbal essence. Refinement does not fall by the wayside when natures bounty meets her blooms. We love desert greens with fuzzy-headed bun-ny tails (a type of ornamental grass) and vintage pink roses. When mated, these elements give natural beauty a dose of glam. Desert florals also work as art for both the reception planters boxes filled with succulents, wood, and stone create artistic centerpieces with a sculptural lookand the wedding party. A desert in full bloom for your summer ceremonyisnt it organic? Jennifer Thornton

DCOR
Offbeat Brides
When it comes to details, brides are funneling their o -beat sensibilities into conceptual big day dcor. Flirting with the unusual produces artistic reinventions of tradi-tional elementsthink props as centerpieces, mismatched tabletops and splashes of unabashed color, (hello, neon!) Fabric scraps refashioned into wedding banners and bun-ting, and paint chips used as place cards are other staples of unconventional dcor, but theres no limit to what can be created. Among these whimsical reimaginings are emp-ty ea-market frames strung up for fun, vintage birdcages holding owers, candles or guests well wishes, vibrantly chalked menu boards, and cake toppers and cocktails that
infuse pops of playful pigment into every setting. When clustered, antique milk bottles chicly exhibit rustic oral displays that complement vintage doilies stitched together as heirloom table runners. Ribboned streamers, lollipop gar-land and paper crafted into unlikely incarnations ( owers, archways, and parasols) make for fanciful ceremonial and reception scenery, while a sweets-making station delightfully rechristens the candy bar. A custom-styled candy bu et-as-backdrop, meanwhile, creates a visual treat using retro con-fectionary like rock candy, old-timey suckers, ring pops and bottled soda. How sweet it is!Jennifer ornton

Get Glam with Glitter
Girls like sparklesome things never change. Not even when we grow up and meet the man of our dreams, hence the trendy move toward all that glitters. Amp up the drama of your a air with fa-vors that icker. When the lights are turned down lowthink dazzle; not only will your favors be fun, but theyll do double-du-ty as their sparkle amps up your tables decor. Whether its from real-deal gems or crafters glitter, a hint of glitz transforms the seemingly been-there-gave-that wedding favor into a glamtastic guest surprise. From iridescent papered trinkets to crystallized gift tags and gleaming favor boxes, use shining accessories like
sequins, craft gems, and glitter paint to prettify just about any-thingfrom the high-priced (glitzy wedding asks, diamond-inspired compacts) to the DIY adornment (think candles, wine glasses, or hanging ornaments). Even higher on the convenience and cost spectrums are edible treats like cupcakes topped with candied sparkles and nesting in glitter-dipped wrappers, and handmade soaps swathed in gold paper bound with ribbons that glint. For true bridal bling, add rhinestones to napkin holders, photo frames, or Champagne toasting utescheers to that! Giving has never been this glam.Jennifer ornton

Melissa & Johnny TrifunovicSeptember 30, 2011, Wine & Roses, Lodi
Theres no time like the presentthats what Johnny discovered after carrying Melissas diamond ring around in his sock for a week. We were in the hallway of our house and he just got down on one knee and said you know what, Ive been waiting for the perfect time and I cant find it so Im just going to do it. Off came the sock, out came the diamond, and as you can guess, Melissa said yes. Wanting to have a relaxed wedding with rustic flare, Wine & Roses barn and garden was an idyllic setting for the couple. The bride carried a bouquet of wildflowers in shades of blue and violet down the aisle, and recycled wine bottles became rose-filled centerpieces. Everything came together perfectly, despite one stressful moment where the bride ended up without transportation. I stopped and started to panic I told one of the groomsmen that I needed Johnny, recalls Melissa. I was falling apart because I didnt want to see him and I was nervous it wasnt working out how I planned, Luckily, the unfortunate oversight gave way to a memorable moment. I saw him and everything fell into place. Nothing mattered I dont know why I was going by the tradition of not seeing him, it was like, what am I doing? Im marrying you and spending the rest of my life with you. It reminded me what the whole day is about. At four a.m. when the couple finally crawled into bed after their celebration, they were able to look over all the photo booth pictures guests took and signed for them. We got to go through and see how much fun everyone was having it was the best part.

Kat & Spencer MarcelleOctober 1, 2011, Bare Ranch, Lodi
For Kat and Spencer Marcelle, getting married was something that came naturally. There was no extravagant en-gagement, just a decision made out of mutual love and adoration. The ceremony and reception reflected their down-to-earth personalities with many heartfelt, personal touches. To start, the two met at San Diego State and though the college had a population of 35,000 students, there were only thirty Latin majors in the schoolKat and Spencer in-cluded. So it was a clever and sweet touch when the couple contacted their Latin professor to officiate the ceremony. It was super special and really awesome, says Kat, who says she still remembers spotting Spencer in the back of the room during their first class together. The couple had other fun details that contributed to the vintage flare of their wedding. Each table had mixed-and-matched bouquet centerpieces utilizing various glass, silver, and white ceramic vases which Kat collected from thrift stores and antique shops throughout the year. They also walked down the aisle to their favorite Beatles songs, performed by a string quartet. Of all the memories the couple has of their wedding day, their favorite was when the last song of the evening was played. It was Love is All You Need by the Beatles. All of our guests just backed out of the dance floor and formed a big circle while we danced and they sang the song to us, recalls Kat. It was the most beautiful thing weve ever seen.

Rose & Bob HawkinsFebruary 12, 2012, Los Barriles, Baja California
Rose and Bobs atypical romance blossomed over the course of a long distance relationship. He lived in San Diego, I live in Fairfield, says Rose, who dated Bob for three years despite the miles between them. The benefits of living apart? Were always so happy to see one another, and so sad to say goodbye, says Rose. Since the couple continued living in two different areas throughout their engagement, they decided to throw a destination wedding in Baja California. On the first night, guests enjoyed a welcome dinner with margaritas and were greeted with gift bags, equipped with post-margarita cures like bottled water, aspirin, and mints. The second day, guests explored the fishing village of Los Barriles with ATV tours, as the couple hosted a scavenger hunt through the town on four-wheelers. That evening all sixty guests gathered for dinner and the restaurant hosted a live band on the back of a flatbed truck, igniting an impromptu dance party in the street. The wedding itself took place on the beach with lush tropical flowers for dcor. Rose wore a flowing white Jessica McClintock dress and Bob wore khakis and a white shirt. The reception served authentic Mexican cuisine and guests skipped the champagne toasts for top-shelf tequila shots instead. After nearly half a year of marriage, Rose and Bob have finally moved in together and are ready to enjoy their wedded bliss once and for all. Whenever I would visit or he would visit Id walk through the door and say, oh hes here! says Rose. Now as they settle into married life, they feel more secure than ever. Im looking forward to having the comfort of each other always, she says.

Jillian & Kevin BarletMay 12, 2012, The Jacktone Ranch, Stockton
Many brides today are finding that do-it-yourself details are all the rage; not just for money-saving purposes, but to give their weddings that special, personal touch. For Jillian and Kevin Barlet, creating their wedding details by hand was a lot of work, but they wouldnt have done it any other way. It was exactly what we wanted, says Jillian. Everybody appreciated it so much. Since Kevin is an avid horse rider, the hands-on groom wanted there to be a barn at their venue, and so the couple made special arrangements with Jacktone Ranch, a private, family-owned fa-cility, and booked a beautiful country venue. The couple added to the rustic environment with plenty of homemade shabby-chic accents like burlap table runners sewn by the grooms mother and colorful cowboy-boot cookies baked by the brides mother. Jillian also created unique boutonnieres and corsages out of fabric and burlap flowers. The actual bouquets were also arranged by Jillian using fresh flowers she bought at Costco. Jillian says because DIY wed-dings are so huge right now, its extremely easy to find inspiration and how-to instructions over the internet. As long as you can dream it, theres a way to create it, but give yourself time to make it all happen, since creating your own favors and dcor becomes added work on top of the regular planning. I would say try to stay really organized and try to get everything done before the week-of the wedding; as much as you possibly can, adds Jillian. You want to be able to enjoy your guests when they come to visit you. Overall the added effort of the couple and their families helped make Kevin and Jillians big day a one-of-a-kind event to remember.

Rebecca & John MadsenApril 28, 2012, Viaggio Estate & Winery, Acampo
Weve been together for seventeen years. Weve probably known each other for eighteen. As Rebecca recounts the years shes spent with John, it goes to show that there is no right timeline when it comes to marriage, as every couple has their own unique journey. When John finally proposed to Rebecca, they had already almost made it to the twenty year mark, but decided to make it official before starting a family. Ironically, the time they took before getting engaged was no indicator of the time theyd take to plan their wedding, as the couple managed to put to-gether their big day in an impressive two-month span. I think it was easier, says Rebecca of the deadline. Instead of dragging it out you have to make your decisions and stick with them. The couple decided to have an intimate, family style affair with lots of spring flowers, sunny yellow accents, and favors that matched the venue of Viaggio Winery such as wine-stoppers and personalized coasters. The couple arrived to the wedding in a 1957 Chevy; the very same car that Rebeccas grandparents had their first date in, and the car that her parents drove away from their own wedding in. Since getting married, Rebecca says people often ask her if things feel different now with John. Ultimately, she says its mixed things up in a good way. Its fun to be able to call him my husband. For soon-to-be brides, she offers this sound advice: Do not stress, because everything will work out. You have to enjoy it and not worry about the small things.

Olivia & Michael IversonNovember 11, 2011, Viaggio Estate & Winery, Acampo
You never know when love might walk through the door, it could be when you least expect it. For Olivia and Michael, it came through a checkout aisle, as Olivia was working as a cashier at a local market when Michael came to pay for his groceries. I liked his eyes, he had these big blue eyes and I told him I like to tell people what I like about them even if I dont know them, laughs Olivia. I guess he liked the comment because he came back the next week and said, You know, Ive been thinking about you and was wondering if I could have your phone num-ber. You might say the rest is history. About three years later, Michael popped the question. Excited to settle down, the two decided to plan their wedding in six months. They chose a theme that had both vintage and old Holly-wood elements, including dramatic colors like midnight blue bridesmaid gowns, contrasting scarlet roses, and lots of crystal accents on the tables. The antique candle holders made for romantic centerpieces, combined with more lush red roses and decorative crystals. Olivia says that she cant pick a favorite memory from the day, as everything was perfect. But overall, she and Michael were overjoyed to spend the first day of their lives as a married couple celebrating with their friends and family.

Megan & Ryan DenningOct 7, 2011, The Ryde Hotel, Ryde
When it came to Megan and Ryans wedding, they had one goal in mind: to make it fun. Their three major points of concern were the food, the music, and the drinks. The couple thought outside the box to create an event that their guests wouldnt soon forget. To begin, they hired Dennis Specht of Cazales Flower Shop to transform the Ryde Ho-tel into something otherworldly. Every inch of the venue was decked out in grandiose flower arrangements; rich, col-orful fabrics; and extravagant lighting, like chandeliers over every table. The couple had an open bar with signature Bride and Groom cocktails (The Bride was a grape martini, The Groom was Jack Daniels and Coke) as well as a coffee bar which served up lattes, Italian sodas, caramel macchiatos, and other tasty hot beverages. There was also a cookie bar to satisfy everyones sweet tooth. Each table was named after a different song, and guests were seated depending on which song suited them best. We did totally corny songs, says Megan. Guests could be sat at the Im Too Sexy table, the Funky Town table, or the Shake Your Bootie table, just to name a few. Finally, Megan and Ryan had a photo booth for guests to get silly in, which they recommend every couple take advantage of. Me-gan says that as amazing as the actual wedding was, she couldnt help feel a little sad once the big day was over, and recommends that engaged ladies enjoy the planning process while it lasts. You look back and you wish you could do it all again, she says. But I wouldnt change a thing, not one thing. It was absolutely perfect. Im so grateful to be able to say that.

Breanna & Aleksandr WedlerJune 26, 2011, Grace Vineyards, Galt
Breanna and Aleks were living at opposite ends of the Earth (well, almosthe is from Australia and she is a Lodi native) when the universe decided to bring the two together. Aleks was traveling the world and came through Stock-ton in 2009 to stay with an old friend. When he met Breanna, sparks flew. Before she knew it, Breanna was on her way to Australia. After seven months of living down under, she returned to Stockton to apply for her Australian visa. Little did she know that proposal plans were well under way. I thought I was going to Napa to enjoy a day at the spa with my mom, my aunt, and a couple of friends As Iwent for a walk with one of my girl friends, who do I see come through the gates? Aleks. I had no clue he was even in the country. He had me so fooled, recalls Breanna. He had been planning for over two months with my mom and best friend, as well as the winery and Mary our photographer. I was completely taken aback. It will forever be one of the best days in my life. The couple planned a beautiful wed-ding and worked hard to make every detail special. While taking photos they enjoyed champagne from the winery they got engaged at, and to represent their love of travel, they replaced table numbers with names of countries they had traveled to together, and put a photo of themselves in that country on each table. Breanna says the key to having a great wedding is to be organized throughout the planning process. I didnt want to stress the day-of over things that it was too late to stress about, she adds. Since we were so organized with our vendors, details, and timelines, the day went smoothly and I didnt have to worry about a thing. Its the best way to enjoy your day!

Diane & Eric OsterlieMarch 24, 2012, Holy Cross Church, Linden
Nothing helps break the ice like a little friendly competition. For Diane and Eric, a poker game was the perfect way to engage in some frisky banter and open the door to what would become a seven year relationship, until Eric popped the question in April of 2011. When the couple planned their big day, they had a do-it-yourself mentality that helped make their event a unique affair. The DIY aspect offered plenty of excuses for the family to get together and create the brides vision. For wedding favors, Dianes bridesmaids chipped in to make her familys homemade pomegranate jam. My bridesmaids came out and picked every little pomegranate seed out of hundreds and hundreds of pome-granates, laughs Diane, who incorporated family recipes into other aspects of the celebration by serving her aunts personal recipes for the hors doeuvres, as well as her grandmothers homemade biscotti. Another special touch was using the brides grandmothers mailbox, which had been in front of her home since the bride was born, as a box for guests to put their cards. The mailbox was going to be replaced but the brides cousin cleverly salvaged it, painting it white and putting an address, 32412 Lovers Lane, using the couples wedding date for the address. Diane says that celebrating with their entire family was the most special part of her day; especially seeing her nephews, ages 9 and 6, tear it up on the dance floor all night long. Her advice to brides is to take several moments to absorb the memories. Take it in because the day goes by in such a whirlwind, you kind of forget everything. That was a big thing for me. Taking a breath and looking around and thinking this is my wedding day. This is happening.

Rebecca & Derek HansonOctober 15, 2011, Viaggio Estate & Winery, Acampo
Derek and Rebecca are not San Joaquin locals, but when they decided to have a West Coast wedding to better ac-commodate their families, they discovered Acampo and instantly fell in love. Everyone that was there said they had no idea this even existed, says Rebecca of the area. We really lucked out because it was just beautiful. Rebecca says that they hoped to create an elegant, classic looking affair for their wedding, and having Viaggio as a backdrop made it easy. The bride wore a timeless fit-n-flare gown down the aisle, and the bridal party donned long, modern gowns in a rich shade of gray. All the men wore tuxedos, and the venue was decorated with plenty of white flowers and candles to give the room an ambient glow. Rebecca says her favorite part of the day was the fifteen minute break she and Derek had for a short sunset photo shoot. Because there were so many friends and family to visit with during the wedding, she was grateful for the small window of time to connect and let reality sink in. It was the most peaceful moment of the entire day and probably the entire weekend. Rebecca says if she could give newly engaged brides a piece of advice, it would be to enjoy the engagement period. I got engaged and I immediately started thinking about the wedding and what was going to happen... she recalls. Theres only so much time in your life where you can say my fiance or Im engaged just enjoy that time.

Alice & Brad JoaquinJuly 15, 2011, Cathedral of the Annunciation, Stockton
San Joaquin natives Alice and Brad got engaged at the end of their annual trip to Santa Cruz. He tried to propose all week while we were there and I didnt know, says Alice. Anytime wed go somewhere Id invite people so it wasnt until we got back that he did. Eventually, Brad did get a yes from Alice, and the couple planned a colorful, summertime affair. I always loved the month of July and thats actually when we started dating, says Alice, who focused on using lots of colorful flowers in their dcor including roses, hydrangeas, daisies, and plenty of greens. The couple also decided to create a candy bar filled with chocolate covered goodies, gummy bears, skittles and more, so that guests could snack on sweets at the reception or take home their own goodie bags. Another important detail was the photography. They chose Matthew James Photographers for their distinct style. I liked that they werent cookie cutter, says Alice. While planning, Alice kept an easygoing demeanor to avoid becoming overwhelmed. I took a more mild approach but it was fun, she says. I didnt try to taste all the cake I didnt have to see it all. If it worked for us, Id check it off the list. Alice says if brides want to avoid the wedding craze they should follow their gut and go with the first option they like. Needless to say, Alice and Brads big day was a success and their relaxed planning style worked just fine. I cant even express the feeling of having your closest family and friends there, says Alice of the celebration. It was such an overwhelming yet amazing feeling. It was such a feeling of love.K.B.

Rebecca & Mitchell GillApril 28, 2012, Rebeccas Parents Home, Ceres
When Rebecca got married, she was the third daughter in her family to walk down the aisle, so she was prepared for the planning ahead. Opting for a creative, backyard wedding with lots of do-it-yourself details, she and her husband Mitch-ell tied the knot with over 200 of their closest family and friends in Ceres. Having met on the website Match.com, the couple chose to put their own twist on the typical bouquet and garter toss and instead threw boxes, each with their own fake Match.Com profiles inside and fun first date gifts like movie tickets and gift cards to Starbucks. Other hand-made elements included centerpieces that the brides father welded and sculpted out of industrial metal pipes, which were then embellished with birch branches from the familys own backyard, silk roses, and hanging crystals. Im not a very traditional bride. I kind of have my own style, says Rebecca, who added that shes never been in to the princess thing and wanted to give her ceremony an edgier look. The couple combined traditional wedding elements with more artistic details like a dramatic backdrop of framed damask behind the cake table, black hanging chandeliers, and black leather spiked boots which the bride wore under her white gown. Rebecca said the key to their wedding was having a laid-back outlook. Forty-five minutes before walking down the aisle, a gust of wind blew over an awning she had built for the ceremony. It was draped with fabric and decorated with flower sconces and even a chandelier, but the entire thing toppled. Without panicking, the brides father came to the rescue with his own forklift and repaired the customized altar in the nick of time. Theres bound to be something that will happen, says Rebecca. It just makes the day that much cooler. It makes it something to talk about. I wouldnt have cared if my dad picked up that awning and just laid it in a pile, I wouldnt have cared. Things happen and theres no need in stressing out.

THE
BILTMOREESTATE:
Where Love Lives LargeBY JENNIFER THORNTON
The storied Biltmore Estate, once the private getaway of playboy George Vanderbilt II (heir to the Vander-bilt fortune), now stands as one the Southeasts principal draws. One of the few places in the nation that can legitimately claim to offer something for everyone, this sprawling testa-ment to Gilded Age opulence sur-rounded by the mountains of Western North Carolina is uniquely suited for honeymoonersparticularly couples with a penchant for luxury, a love of history and a hankering for the great outdoors.
Today, more than a century after construction was completed on the French-country chateau in 1895, the meticulously preserved residence still stands as the largest in the country. Occupier of 8,000 acres, the Biltmore certainly nabs most im-
pressive honors. Hearst Castle may get the love here in Cali, but its fabled Southeastern counter-part generates the buzz down Southand judg-ing by the fl ocks of annual visitors hailing from all corners of the globe, just about everywhere else too.
Comprising the Biltmore Estate is the Biltmore House and Gardensthe former with 250 art and antique-fi lled rooms in two wings, and the latter conceived by 19th-century landscape starchitect Frederick Law Olmsteadand a variety of din-ing spots and shops. Connected to it is Antler Hill Village & Winery, also featuring mercantile-type stores, but with the addition of a farm, an outdoor adventure center where visitors can arrange more activities than they knew existed, and even more culinary options. Add to this the luxurious but more accessible Inn on Biltmore Estate, a four-star hospitality offshoot with 213 elegantly appointed rooms and nine suites that once served as quar-ters for guests of the Vanderbilts. Theres also a
myriad of recreational opportunities nodding to the Biltmores culinary heritage, agricultural past, and horticultural legacy. Think wine tasting, cook-ing classes, Kitchen Garden, wine cellar tours, to-go picnics, garden tours, and fresh blooms on of-fer.
For honeymooners, romance takes shape several ways. First of all, check your pulse if you dont feel immediately swoony the minute you step on the grounds of the massive estatemassive being a massive understatement. Its sweeping in a way that the Grand Canyon is; you see it, but you really cant believe it. For my husband (a sappy roman-tic who helps me gauge the places best suited for other saps), and me, it meant checking in to the Inn at Biltmore for a blissful two-nighter.
If the rating didnt give it away, rooms here are lav-ish, appointments plentiful, and accolades consis-tentthe Inn at Biltmore is a Conde Nast Travel-ers gold lister from way back. (Hint: if you casually

throw out the fact that youre on your honey-moon at check in, voila, you may see Champagne and sweets in your room). Among the amenities of interest to the honeymoon set is the spa, an excessively indulgent hideaway doling out a his and hers Estate Experience that relaxed, exfo-liated and soothed my husband and me into a near catatonic state of submission. Though not together for our treatments, later, tension gone, we met up for a glass of wine and, fair warning lovers, tried not to fall asleep. (Alas, we were un-successful.)
Indulgences extend to dining. There is no short-age of light-bit eateries and confectionary at the Biltmore Estate, but when it comes to fine din-ing, The Dining Room at the Inn sets an exquisite table. Here, patrons glimpse the dining habits of the Vanderbilt clan (and are incredibly jealous once they do). Fresh ingredients harvested di-rectly from acres of Biltmore Estate farmland are plucked then utilized by the culinary team to cre-ate dishes featuring everything from fresh berries to estate-raised cattle. Even the grapes are culti-vated for estate-made wine.
Equally filling is the Biltmores extensive activity listfor honeymooners this runs the gamut de-pending on your vacation style. My husband is an outdoors hound and Im a history lover with
a bent for gorgeous interiors and gardens. Need-less to say, both of us found ourselves in incred-ibly good stead at the estate. After hitting the outdoor adventure center at Antler Hill Village, where my better half fulfilled his male fantasy of off-roading, he later surprised me with a private carriage ride, clandestinely arranged while I was wine tasting.
Later we took an Architects Tour of the Biltmore House, which confirmed every notion I had about living large. Stricken by the stories and the vin-tage ornaments adorning the grand residence (both earning a big whoa in our book), we grap-pled with the structures sheer scale over a gour-met picnic from the Bake Shop at Biltmore House, which we shared amid the fragrance and flora of the Spring Garden (think white pines and hemlock among springs most beautiful blooms). We fur-ther marveled at the fact that this was one of only several lush gardens on the property, all worthy of a tour.
Sadly, our tour of the Biltmore Estate came to an inevitable end. But for countless other honey-mooners, mark my words: It is an idyllic start to Happily Ever After.
FOR RATES AND INFORMATION: biltmore.com
The Road Less TraveledThe mountainous landscape surrounding the Biltmore Estate makes for thrilling outdoor adventure, but none more hair-raising than the Land Rover Experience Driving School, which puts adrenaline junkies behind the wheel of a brand-new Land Rover for off-road excursions through breathtaking backcountry. This factory-backed off-road driving program runs all year long, in all types of weather, on more than 4,000 acres of trails. Highly trained instructors drive this outfit, which takes into account ones piloting abilitiesso, no side tilts or traversing complex obstacles if you cant hang. During these nail-biting jaunts, drivers learn to handle ascents and descents and may even give rock crawling a go (not for the faint of heart, but definitely good for honeymooners who will stop at nothing to hang on to one anotherfor dear life or otherwise). Full-day excursions or shorter 1-2 hour lessons are available. Biltmore.com
Detour: AshevilleIn the Biltmores backyard is artsy Asheville. Chockablock with charming boutiques, bistros, shops and a buzzing arts scene, this quaint hub of Southern culture is more populated these days thanks to The Hunger Games, which was shot in the surrounding mountains of Western North Carolina, but dont let that deter you. Here, a few ar-guments for a few hours downtown (longer if you got it).A hotbed of local culture, Asheville boasts more than thir-ty art galleries in its funky downtown alone. As such, stu-dio strolls, gallery hops and art walks are common, and the River Arts District and Folk Art Center both house art collections, exhibits and demos year-round. Equally pul-sating is the music scene, which other parts of the unin-formed country may well consider emerging, but locals proudly boast that it has always been thriving. Indeed, here cross-genre acts, from traditional balladeers and mountain musicians to contemporary alternative rock-ers, perform lively shows attended by equally energetic crowds. Continuing the onslaught of culture are historic attractions, museums and a shockingly large amount of Art Deco architecture (the most concentrated collection in the Southeast). I was also surprised to learn that in ad-dition to claiming the largest American residence in the Biltmore Estate, Asheville also has its oldest: the Smith-McDowell-House Museum. Two of the most heralded attributes of Asheville are the farm-to-table cuisine and shopping; the first for its fresh Southern flavors (restaurants range from casual to up-scale) and locally owned coffee shops (a real find for this devotee of the freshly brewed bean), and the second for absolute uniqueness. Finds here include arts and crafts, Southern antiques and one-of-a-kind trinkets (Asheville could easily be monikered Home of the Unusual Souve-nir). Bringing everyone together is the great (seriously, great) outdoorsin Asheville this means some of the most beautiful topography in the entire nation. Often referred to as the playground of the Southeast, the surrounding mountains set the stage for both serene pursuits (nature walks, stargazing, horseback riding) and high-octane ad-venture (biking, zip lining, water sports). Hiking in these parts is one of the more popular pastimes, and it yields the best opportunity for mind-blowing photo ops. The best scenery is along Blue Ridge Parkway. This stunning 469-mile stretch of road named Americas Most Scenic Drive lives up to its billing and impresses at every turn (some of them hairpin!).

Palm Springs feverBY JENNIFER THORNTON
Once a steal-away spot for Tinseltown luminaries like Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner whose love den, Twin Palms Estate, proudly remains, Palm Springs is still swingin after all these years. Credit stylish boutiques, hip hotels, mod architecture, stunning landscape and a buzzing cultural scene for its rise up the now trending radar. Here, the mini-moon hot spots.
STAY:While the Viceroy and Parker hotels all nod Hollywood (blink and youll miss a celebrity), hipsters unpack for less, but considerably more, at the Ace (acehotel.com). A gym, large com-mon patio area (complete with tricked-out retro airstream trailer!), pool, and outdoor spa services (best massage in Palm Springs claims are frequent) are among the perks of staying at this 180-room, pet-friendly palace that takes its Rat-Pack design cues from midcentury mod (Elle Dcor is a fan). But its the little thingscheese popcorn from the mini-bar, rooms with vinyl record players and a specially curated mix of lobby tunesthat make Ace the place to stay in Palm Springs.
PLAY:Architecture and art hops, as well as private estate tours of celebrity digs are fave pastimes
of the culture set, while outdoor lovers delight in an abundance of desert adventure. Hike lush Indian Canyons, roam nearby Joshua National Park, or take the glass-walled Palm Springs Aerial Tramway up 6,000 feet to Mt. Jacinto State Park. Scale the dunes at Coachella Valley Preserve and seek shade under its palm oases, or glimpse the beauty of the desert by hot-air balloon. Closer to town, tee off at one of sev-eral golf courses or hop a cruiser around town (visitpalmsprings.com). Just twelve miles on its outskirts, the town of Desert Hot Springs (de-serthotsprings.com) is home to modestly-priced hot-spring spas, boho bodegas, 99-cent tacos and roadside succulents.
SHOP: Desperately seeking style? Hit the chic galleries, alfresco dining, retro boutiques and consign-ment shops lining Palm Canyon Drive. Here excess comes courtesy of Trina Turks name-sake outpost. Saturated in bright yellow and teeming with covetable trinkets, this is what desert dreams are made of. Joining it is high-end Studio One 11 and the Uptown Heritage Galleries and Antique District. Lower on the cost scale, but no less indulgent, is the flea market finds at Dazzles. (palmcanyondrive.org)

Bistro (lulupalmsprings.com) is the cool new kid on the block, but we prefer the real-deal Mexican at El Mirasol Cocina Mexicana (elmirasolcocinamexicana.menutoeat.com). Splurge at Melvyns Restaurant (inglesideinn.com), which hosted Sinatras wedding dinner, and stop by the Purple Palm Restaurant & Bar (colonypalmshotel.com) for its signature sipthe lavender mojito. For breakfast, nab chocolate French toast at Normas (theparkerpalmsprings.com).
