Letter from the Pastor

Mother’s Day

D ear Friends,

Children have a way with words. Take, for example, these letters to God, written by children.

“Dear God, I got left back. Thanks a lot. Susan.”

“Dear God,

“Dear God, What is it like when you die? I just want to know. I don’t want to do it. Your friend, Mike.”

“Dear God, Church is all right, but you could sure use better music. I hope this doesn’t hurt your feelings. Can you write some new songs? Your friend, Monica. PS: The sermons are long and boring, too. Would you send each of our priests a stop watch? That would help.”

“Dear God, Please make my sister prettier, so she can get married. Thank you. Philip.”

“Dear God, My mom is acting weird because she is getting old. Can you take back a few gray hairs? That would help bring the house back to normal. Thanks. Judy.”

“Dear God, I go to a Catholic school. The priests there are very nice. But did you ever think of giving them different clothes? Sincerely, Mary Jo.”

The beauty of these letters is the familiarity, openness, and “at-homeness,” with which the children speak. These children talk with the Lord like they talk with their mother. And, indeed, the Lord’s love is like a mother’s love—life-giving, nurturing, unconditional, and protective (like a good shepherd). Today we acknowledge and give thanks for the beauty and power of maternal love—which mirrors divine love.

“Mother is the name for God on the lips and in the hearts of children.” —William M. Thakeray

I wish all mothers a happy Mother’s Day!

Sincerely,

Parish Ministries Father Craig’s Sabbatical

D ear Parishioners:

To clear up any confusion or rumors about my sabbatical and eventual leaving San Francisco Solano Parish, I wish to note the following:

I will complete my second six-year term (July 2009—June 2015) as pastor of San Francisco Solano Parish on 30 June 2015.

Until 1 July 2015, I will remain as pastor of San Francisco Solano Parish. An administrator or pastor will be assigned to San Francisco Solano Parish, effective 1 July 2015.

I have been granted a sabbatical, my first sabbatical in almost 31 years of priesthood, from 1 January 2015 through June 2015.

I will return to the parish the weekend of 27-28 June 2015 to celebrate my final Masses at San Francisco Solano and to say farewell/goodbye to parishioners.

I am not retiring. I am too young, far too young, to retire! I will receive a new pastoral/priestly assignment in the Diocese of Orange, effective 1 July 2015.

A parochial vicar will be assigned to San Francisco Solano Parish, effective 1 July 2014. He will provide pastoral care/priestly service, along with me, from July through December 2014 and in my absence during the sabbatical, January through June 2015.

I hope you find this clarification helpful.

Sincerely,

Pastoral Services Appeal (PSA) 2014:

Thank you to our parishioners who have made a pledge to SPA 2014. If you have not yet done so, will you please consider making a pledge to SPA 2014?

Readings can also be found online at: http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/033014.cfm

Jesus said: “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs over else-where is a thief and a robber. But whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice, as the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of t h e m , a n d t h e s h e e p f o l l o w h i m , because they recognize his voice.

But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers.”

Although Jesus used this figure of speech, the Pharisees did not realize what he was trying to tell them.
