SECOND COLLECTION

On the weekend of May 27th and June 3rd all parishes in our Archdiocese will be conduc ng a second collec on announcement for the Priest Pension Fund. This fund supports the pension for priests who have reached re rement age. This year there will be 72 priests receiving pensions. A er faithfully serving many years in the Lord’s vineyard, the Priest Pension Plan ensures that our semi and fully re red priests may have a dignified re rement by being able to pay for the many expenses encountered in re rement. As the average age of priests con nues to rise and priests, along with the general popula on, live longer lives, there is a greater need than ever to ensure the viability and strength of our pension. Please be generous in making a dona on on the weekend of June 3rd and June 4th to support our Archdiocesan Priest Pension Plan.

The Caritas Corner The Caritas Fund recently played a role in a sit-uation where a Leon Valley elderly couple was in desperate shape. The husband suffers from moderate dementia, and his wife fell in the shower and broke her hip. Unfortunately, she died of her injury. The house was a terrible mess and needed total cleaning and repairs. The husband needed groceries. The Caritas Fund assisted by providing approximately $1,800 for cleaning supplies, food and some house repairs. This was an Inter-faith effort with the Mormon Church on Huebner Road and its parishioners; the Leon Valley Police and Fire Department; the City leadership and staff; and the San Francescani Society who all responded to the Lord’s call for help with the onsite clean-up and repair efforts.

This Caritas – or “Charity” -- Fund is administered by the San Francescani Society and funded through the second collection normally on the third Sunday of each month. Its purpose is to assist recipients – who through no fault of their own have fallen on hard times and have recognizable “one time” needs to help get back on their feet.

In addition to the once a month second collection, the Caritas Fund accepts individual as well as business donations. Donations can be mailed to: Henry Garcia, Treasurer, San Francescani Society, P.O. Box 782474, San Antonio, TX 78278-2474.

We are continually looking for additional broth-ers and sisters in need. Referrals can be made to Ron Bucchi, Society President, by leaving a message at the SFdP office at 210-227-0548.

Thank you for your continued generosity and support.

San Francescani Society

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The custom of genuflec on is not found everywhere in the Catholic Church. In fact, it is a bit of breach of e que e to genuflect in most Eastern Catholic Churches. If you’re visi ng an Eastern Catholic or an Orthodox church, the “when in Rome” rule should be adopted. Watch what the home team is doing! Usually, Eastern Catholics and Orthodox reserve a small por on of the eucharis c bread for the dying in a cupboard or eucharis c dove, but it is not a center of a en on or devo on. The rule is to make a profound bow, called a “metasis,” toward the altar—bowing deeply while making the sign of the cross.

East and West split years before we Westerners began to reserve the Blessed Sacrament prominently in our churches. Thus, the East never changed the original custom of bowing toward the altar. Increasingly, as tabernacles became more widespread in the West and moved into prominent placement within churches, we replaced the bow toward the altar with a genuflec on toward the Blessed Sacrament when its place of reserva on is visible.

In a church where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in a special chapel or off the main axis of the building, normally you should bow toward the altar when you enter your pew, because the eucharis c table is the principal sign of Christ’s presence in the church building. If you have ever par cipated in the liturgy of Dedica on of a Church and Altar, there is no mistaking the altar’s significance: it is first slathered with chrism and then adorned with a brazier billowing clouds of incense that fill the whole church as a sign of prayer and presence!
