Behind the Hampton Inn March Program Pat Edwards Pat Edwards received the Cartouche Award at the 2014 annual meeting of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers in Williamsburg Va. Pat will be talking about the Society and sharing his portfolio of 45 years with us. His specialty is French marquetry - he established the American School of French Marquetry here in San Diego - and he also does antique repair along with making many replicas of classic furniture. Pat Edwards: "I joined the Society of American Period Furniture Makers the first year they started, and am proud of my membership number 170, since they now have over a thousand members across the country. I actively participated in each of their early conferences at Williamsburg and wrote articles for the first three issues of their Journal, which has become the premiere woodworking journal in the US." "However, after several years traveling to Williamsburg in January, which included a blizzard that closed the colonial village down for several days, I got to the point where spending January in San Diego seemed a better idea than looking for snow. That doesn't mean I lost interest in the activities of SAPFM. I follow them on the web, talk to other members often, joined the new Southern California Chapter when it was organized last year, and always look forward to the Journal." "The conference in Williamsburg is titled "Working Wood in the 18th Century" and is a great opportunity to meet with other furniture makers and collectors. The Cartouche is a very significant award, but here in Southern California, not many people understand what it means. I usually tell them it is like an Academy Award, since it is voted on by members of a group to recognize the achievements of another member of that same group. In other words it is an award of your peers, for lifetime achievement in a particular skill. You must be nominated and then a jury evaluates your efforts in various fields, like teaching, awards, creations, publications, lectures, etc. I am the first person west of the Mississippi to receive it." Pat is a lively speaker, and this promises to be an interesting program. See you there, Del Cover, Program Chairman

From the President…

Having a chance to lead the Association for the past year has been a great experience. I want to thank everyone who has helped me with useful suggestions, needed criticism and, most of all, their own time and effort. Our organization turned out to be a lot more complicated enterprise than I ever expected but it has been rewarding to meet and become friends with many terrific new people and see firsthand how much good work we do for the community. But, until the press of SDFWA affairs kept me out of the shop for a few months, I did not realize how important working in the shop has been for me. There is nothing like concentrating on woodworking itself that takes one away from the cares and stresses of everyday life. I finally got a new project started recently. Sawdust is once again being tracked into the house to the consternation of my wife but I'm feeling more productive. On the other hand, being away from the bench did not help my skills and the result has been more mistakes than usual. I am reminded of the old joke in which the answer to the question, "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" is "Practice, practice, practice." I hope all of you are finding time and resources to keep active in our craft. Two SDFWA members are to be highlighted this month. First is Mark Burke who heard Kevin Deal ask for help with his New Member Greeting committee at the January meeting. Mark, a brand new member himself, promptly stepped forward to assist. Welcoming and getting acquainted with new members is one of our most important functions and we sincerely appreciate Mark's participation. The second highlight is for Josh Stotler. Last summer Josh responded to a request from the Marine Special Forces Battalion commander at Camp Pendleton to SDFWA for assistance in making commemorative plaques which are given to members of the battalion when they leave the unit. Since then Josh has been turning out several high quality walnut plaques for the Marines each month; made to the exacting specifications of the battalion and at his own expense. He will be telling us about this project at the Craftsman Corner feature of our meeting on March 26. Many thanks to both Mark Burke and Josh Stotler for their efforts on behalf of the Association. A new initiative is underway that you should know about. Last month the executive members of the SDFWA board began exploring the possibility of developing a woodworking shop facility which would be available to SDFWA members. This subject has been discussed in years past but did not progress past the discussion stage. We were prompted to look into it again when we learned that several very similar organizations in the U.S. have already created a member shop with great success. Thus far our efforts have been limited to gathering information about the other organization’s experience, some preliminary inquiries into the availability and potential cost of appropriate space, and discussion of how such a shop would be organized, staffed and funded. Obviously, it would be a major undertaking. No commitments have been made or will be made until we are sure the project is feasible. We will keep you up to date on the status of this project when we have more specific details for the proposal to report.

SkillsUSA

SkillsUSA, an organization that sponsors a woodworking competition for high school students throughout the nation, has asked for help from SDFWA in holding the San Diego competition on April 25 - 27 this year. You may have heard their presentation at our last general meeting. This is a worthwhile program that fosters interest in woodworking among young people; hopefully some of whom will be future SDFWA members. Please check out the flyer in this month's newsletter

Design in Wood Once again it is time for the 33

rd Annual Design in Wood Exhibition. As in the past we strive to provide the most ideal

venue for woodworkers to show their work and improve this exceptional International Competition of Fine Woodworking.

We have secured major commitments from our many corporate and local sponsors. Along with our co-Sponsor, the 22nd

District Agricultural Association, we look forward to another successful Exhibition and Competition. Last year’s attendance provided the opportunity for 1.5 million fairgoers to see our first class exhibit.

This year’s theme is “FAB Fair”, celebrating the British “invasion” and the people and sounds of the 60’s.

American Woodworker Magazine will once again sponsor the “Best of Show” award as the top prize of $1,000. We will be giving over $21,000 in cash and merchandise awards.

The Design in Wood Fair Planning Committee meets the first Saturday of each month January through May 2014. The next meeting will be April 5, 2014, at Don Spangler’s, 4372 Pocahontas Avenue, San Diego.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

The Design in Wood Exhibition at the Del Mar County Fair opens on June 7, 2014, and runs through July 6, 2014. In order to properly staff the exhibit, we desperately need more volunteers to walk the gallery floor and to help make chairs in the 19

th Century workshop.

Absolutely no experience or special skills are needed for either of these positions. Whatever you need to know will be taught to you when you show up for your shift. There are several advantages to donating some of your time:

1. On the gallery floor you will have an opportunity to examine the entries, rather than just walk through quickly and glance at them. Fielding questions from the public could draw your attention to details that you might otherwise have overlooked. (Don’t worry about questions to which you don’t know the answers. You can always ask one of the staff members who will be nearby.)

2. Working in the chair shop allows you to work with hand tools that you might seldom use. (Don’t worry if you don’t

know how because you will be given a short lesson and you will look like an expert to the public.)

3. For each shift you will receive two fair tickets. Sign up for more than one shift and you might collect enough tickets for you, your family, and your friends and neighbors. You will have to use one (1) ticket for yourself in order to enter the fairgrounds each time you come for your shift.

4. Sign up for closing shifts on the gallery floor and receive four (4) tickets per shift.

5. Volunteers can use an “employees only” gate and avoid the long lines at the main gate. Early entry to the fair allows you to visit some exhibits that are not yet open to the public.

HERE ARE THE EASIEST WAYS TO VOLUNTEER:

Sign up online: Go to www.sdfwa.org and under Design in Wood click on:

1. Volunteer Schedule to see what shifts are available

2. To sign up, click on Volunteer Sign-Up and, using your membership number and email address, log in and complete your sign-up

Note: This method of sign-up will be available only until 5:00pm on May 9, 2014. After that time volunteering must be

done by contacting Eric Lunde at either: Phone at 858-487-7644 Email at: [email protected]

Sign up in Person: You can also volunteer by signing up at the General Meetings. Bring your calendar to the

meeting so you can coordinate your schedule. Thank you in advance for helping your Association. See you at the Fair!
