Jonathan Williams “From a Silhouette”
My mid-period began in 2002, and is logically called as such, because it ushered in my classic technique of Portraiture and figure painting. It stripped my palette down to a few colors (4-6 on the average) and the ‘alchemy’ of those few colors became that much more fulfilling.
Untypical of most artists, I suspect, I start on a dark surface, and work up a progression of lighter colors and tones, but take care to preserve the darkness from beneath, thus I work from the faintest of silhouettes. This means especially human figures, whose flesh I simplify to a palette of 1-2 colors, on occasion, 1-2 additional ones. True to my technique, I work from dark to light, painting several of carefully placed “wet on wet” layers of the same color to achieve a fluidly, modeled result. For the first time since it was painted, 11 years ago, I am showing “The Colossus of 43rd Street” and other selections, all and each evolved from a silhouette.
Daniel Foster has a distinguished 25-year career in innovative and fine/contemporary arts and museum leadership and programming. Additionally, Foster is a proven nonprofit executive and fundraiser – having raised $25 million over the past nine years. In Oct. 2012, Foster became the Executive Director of the Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) leaving his role as the President/CEO of The Community Foundation Serving Riverside & San Bernardino Counties (a $60 million philanthropic and arts leader in the Inland Empire). Previous to TCF, Foster was the Executive Director of the Riverside Art
Museum and widely regarded as a key visionary leader in establishing the city of Riverside into the “City of Arts & Innovation”. Currently, Foster is the Found-ing Board Chair of the newly launched nonprofit arts council for San Bernardino County, Arts Connection.
Academically, Foster received a Master’s of Fine Arts w/honors in New Genres and Painting/Sculpture from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1995, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Entrepreneurship/Business at the University of Southern California in 1988. Additionally, Foster has pursued three years of full-time studies in philosophy, science and studio art at the University of Califor-nia, San Diego (Revelle College). Some of Foster’s strongest arts education influences came from Allan Kaprow, Italo Scanga, Ernest Silva, Kim MacConnel, and David Antin.
Mr. Foster will be the third Executive Director at Oceanside Museum of Art.

The Paint-out is an SDAI-sponsored program to support and promote the art of plein-air paint-ing (painting outside on location). Participating artists gather at designated San Diego locations to paint in plein air and socialize. An informal critique of a day’s paintings is performed with intent to pro-vide a learning and supportive environment. SDAI members and non-members, of all skill levels, are welcome to participate.

The David G. Fleet Young Artists Gallery provides a venue for art from public, private and parochial schools (K ‐12) throughout San Diego City and County in conjunction with SDAI’s art and education programs.
Through our David G. Fleet Young Artist’s Gallery Youth Programs, ART BOX and ART BOX 2 we are actively involved in encouraging art education as a core‐curriculum within our schools. We believe that art improves social skills, helps students
with general academic performance and raises their self‐esteem. Art aids in early childhood development and becomes and alternative to substance abuse and violence. Each youth exhibition is complemented by a free public reception for the artists, students and their teachers, principals, and parents.

Zamorano’s Mission Statement
Students will develop an understanding and appre-ciation for the arts. The students will use this knowl-
edge and apply it to the world around them while becoming productive and responsible citizens in our community. While at Zamorano, students will im-merse themselves in a multifaceted approach to art as a learnable, visual language. Students will integrate creative expression, cultural and historical heritage, artistic perception, art history, and art criti-cism. Art will be integrated into all areas of the curriculum with emphases on ceramics, painting, drawing, pho-tography, sculpture and graphic arts. School - wide Vision Statement
All Zamorano students will be intrinsically moti-vated to become independent thinkers and life-long learners. Students will develop an understanding and appreciation for the dynamic language of the arts. Zamorano students will use this knowledge and apply it to the world around them while becoming productive and responsible citizens in our commu-nity.

Every 2nd Sunday the Model will do an elaborate super long pose that carries over into Monday, giving artists 5 to 6 hours to work on a more developed piece. Models do their own special nude and/or costumed poses, $5.
• Monthly Photography SessionJeff Brosbe is responsible for the monthly photography session. Gallery lighting, a 3-hour photo shoot, and very talented models have made this an exciting and productive event for photographers. The Gathering is a social, relaxed group where artists, aficionados, their spouses or significant others meet over potluck to discuss their latest work and adventures. Children are welcome but the work is not censored, so parental discretion is strongly advised.
The next Gathering dates will be:
March 3rd and April 7thDescription and schedule:• 3:30 to 4:00: bring artwork and check in.• 4:00: doors are locked (ring the doorbell after 4).• 4:30-5:30: artists break off into groups of 9 artists to
present their work. (If enough under-age artists bring work, they will be given a separate group and leader.) Non-presenters can continue socializing or join the group of their choice.
• 5:30 to 6:00: groups finish up, reconvene, socialize and/or help tidy up.
Artists can bring up to 3 pieces of artwork. All skill levels show work for fun, feedback, mentoring and exposure. In the UU tradition there will be a ‘question of the day’ (hereafter known as ‘the Molly’), which artists can answer or ignore when showing their work.
Co-Sponsored by:
and The San Diego County Community Enhancement Fund
Artists are encouraged to bring show flyers, books, magazines, announcements, etc., to share. ‘Cost is just $5.00 per person.’ Everyone is also encouraged to bring food for the potluck. Jonathan will bring his famous guacamole!
New members: this is a great opportunity to meet other members, show your work and see the work being created in the San Diego area.
Everyone else: show us your work, whether you’re getting into the juried shows or not. We want to see what you are doing and have the opportunity to talk with you.
SDAI is continually growing and evaluating programs in order to provide the artist community with exception-al programming and opportunities. Feedback is always appreciated and, if you would like to do so, please email Lesley Anderson at: [email protected].

Kirby Kendrick’s BlogBEHOLD, America!Posted on February 4, 2013
American art is evolving!
American art is pushing all the boundaries!
It is almost inconceivable how much the work of American artists has changed in the past 250 years. This mind-bog-gling evolution was brilliantly presented by three renowned San Diego museums…The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, The San Diego Museum of Art and the Timken Museum of Art. These classy museums pooled their art treasures for a recent knockout show.
BEHOLD, America!
America’s art was presented with the three themes of Figures, Frontiers and Forms; dating from before the revolution in 1771 to the latest contemporary pieces.
See for yourself the evolution!

The artist-provided images and text can easily be emailed to me. I can either copy the finished HD video into a file-sharing site, snail mail a data CD or DVD, or deliver it in person locally. (Hi-def videos are too large to email.)
My blowout price is $50, payable through Paypal (other payment options can be arranged).
I just finished producing another artist promo-tional video (youtube link below).
