Dear Community Members,

For 67 years the San Bernardino County Fair has been providing family-friendly, community-focused fun for the entire family, and we once again continue that tradition May 24 through June 1, 2014. This year, Fair admission is only $6 every single day of the Fair, (only $5 when you pick up a $1 off coupon at one of our many community partners). And, to make things even more family friendly, children 5 years and younger continue to be free. At the San Bernardino County Fair, we are committed to providing the absolute best in family entertainment at an affordable price.

For 2014 the Fair’s theme is “BEE-lieve in FAIR e-tails,” and continues our focus on providing fun for all of our guests while still remaining focused on the important elements only a Fair can provide. Whether you enjoy exhibits, food, entertainment, or participating in one of our friendly competitions, this year’s Fair is sure to provide fun to visitors of all ages.

The Fair is much more than just the fun of corn dogs, concerts, and carnival rides, although they remain some of the most exciting experiences one can have at the Fair ... don’t forget the chance to taste the many unique culinary offerings from more than 25 of our professional food partners; the opportunity to listen to top musical acts such as Jerrod Neiman, War, Mark Chesnutt, or The Marshall Tucker Band in our concert series; watch our future generation of leaders participate in the Junior Livestock program as 4H, Grange, FFA or Independent exhibitors or be awe-inspired by the amazing competitive exhibits entered by your neighbors. With so many different programs and festivities, it’s no wonder the Fair is fun for all ages.

Whether it’s on opening day, nightly for one of our great concerts, or at the Junior Live Stock Auction on Saturday, May 31, I hope you get a chance to visit the 2014 San Bernardino County Fair. May 24 through June 1.

hile writing and recording his new album, Jerrod Niemann immersed himself in the history of country music. A student of music theory and production-he majored in Performance Art Technology at South Plains

College in Levelland, Texas-Jerrod pondered a question that is heard more and more frequently these days: Just what exactly constitutes country? His answer to that query can be found in the musically and technically groundbreaking Free The Music. “This album is my interpretation of how I feel about country right now,” Jerrod says.

The follow-up to his Sea Gayle Records/Arista Nashville debut Judge Jerrod & the Hung Jury, which debuted at No. 1 and yielded the No. 1 hit “Lover, Lover” and the Top 5 single “What Do You Want,” Jerrod’s sophomore album emphasizes the early instruments that have shaped the genre: acoustic guitars and bass, fiddles, and even horns.

“The pedal steel guitar has come to define country music, but there were years and years of country being made before that instrument was even invented. Horns have been in country going back to the 1920s. And fiddles and other string instruments date back even further. I took all those things and put them on Free The Music,” Jerrod explains. “I made this record in an effort to try and mix 1927 with 2027, but I didn’t want to disregard 100 years of what people have already done musically. Instead, I wanted to take that and do it in a way

that is also representative of the future.” The result is an adventurous release that

redefines the listening experience. A “headphones album” if ever there was one, Free the Music is a sonic journey through a multitude of styles, including country, rock, honky-tonk, Dixieland jazz and reggae.

While exploring these sounds, the Kansas native says he sought inspiration in the outside-the-lines approach of two seminal outlaws. “Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings were very progressive in their day, and they were getting harassed by people who said, ‘Hey, that’s not country.’ But the mistake many artists make when they first come to Nashville

is that they want to be those guys so badly that they get stuck in time. It’s our duty to have our own voice and come up with our own way of saying something,” Jerrod stresses. “Icons like Alabama and Ronnie Milsap did that by using pop melodies. But when you hear their songs today, they’ve become country classics. Those artists stepped out, and I hope fans will understand that that was my goal too. I want the album to push you out of any musical comfort zone.”

Jerrod took each of those big steps with great care, painstakingly fine-tuning every song on Free The Music with his visionary co-producer Dave Brainard. Together, the pair cut a new technological path in Dave’s studio, using a one-of-a-kind analog-to-digital recording process to give the record a rich,

n the early fall of 1973 The Marshall Tucker Band was still a young and hungry group out to prove themselves every time they hit the stage. Their debut album had already spawned numerous hits. The band’s recent release

of their Greatest Hits album, in traditional vinyl form, is a time capsule from that period. “We were a bunch of young guys who didn’t know any boundaries” says founding member and longtime lead singer Doug Gray. As it turned out, the collective talents of The Marshall Tucker Band took them very far indeed. More than four decades later, the new vinyl Greatest Hits release takes us back to the early years of The Marshall Tucker Band, both literally and physically.

Still led today by founding member and lead singer Doug Gray, they represent a time and place in music that will never be duplicated. Gray is quick to credit the band’s current dynamic members with carrying on the timeless essence of the Marshall Tucker Band sound. Current members include the highly respected drummer B.B. Borden, a former member of both Mother’s Finest and The Outlaws, multi instrumentalist Marcus Henderson of Macon, Georgia, plays flute, saxophone and keyboards in addition to lead and background vocals, Pat Elwood on bass guitar, and Rick Willis on lead guitar and vocals, both of Spartanburg SC, are disciples of the Caldwell Brothers. Acclaimed lead guitarist and vocalist Chris Hicks recently rejoined the band after a two-year absence. Together they present a powerful stage presence as they continue to tour the country and continue to be powerful force in the world of music.

The Marshall Tucker Band got its start in Spartanburg, S.C. when Gray teamed up with Tommy Caldwell and Toy Caldwell, Paul T. Riddle, George McCorkle and Jerry Eubanks, borrowing the name “Marshall Tucker” from a piano tuner whose name was found on a key ring in their old rehearsal space. In 1972, they signed with Capricorn Records, the same label that guided The Allman Brothers Band, Wet Willie, and others to national fame. The MTB opened shows for The Allman Brothers in 1973, and the following year, they began to headline their own shows across America due to the platinum-plus sales of their debut album.

In years to come, The Marshall Tucker Band would wow critics and influence major country acts like Alabama, The Kentucky Headhunters, Confederate Railroad, and Travis Tritt with its definitive blend of rock, rhythm & blues, jazz, country, and gospel. Now, thanks to the expanding scope of today’s music, a new generation of fans is learning what the rest of their fans have known for so long- that good music knows no boundaries. Along the way, the band has recorded twenty two studio albums, three DVDs, three live albums and many compilations.

In 1980 Tommy Caldwell died as a result of injuries from an auto accident. In 1984 Toy Caldwell, George McCorkle, and Paul Riddle decided to retire. Doug Gray and Jerry Eubanks with the blessings of the other three continued to record and perform as the Marshall Tucker Band. 1n 1993 Toy Caldwell, who wrote the majority of their songs, passed away, as did George McCorkle in 2007. Jerry Eubanks retired in 1996 and Doug Gray continues to lead the current band of fine musicians winning new young fans as well as satisfying the loyal fans of several generations.

Years of rigorous tour schedules earned the band the respect of critics and countless dedicated fans. With hit singles like “Heard It In a Love Song,” “Fire On The Mountain,” “Can’t You See,” and “Take The Highway,” The Marshall Tucker Band earned seven gold and three platinum albums while they were on the Capricorn Records label. During the 90_s, the MTB scored four hit singles on Billboard’s country chart and one on Billboard’s gospel chart. Their music has also been featured on the soundtracks of movies such as Smokey and the Bandit, Blow, The Pursuit of D.B. Cooper, Shipwrecked, Crank 2, Don’t Mess with Zohan, Stop Loss, Swing Vote, Taking Chance and many others as well as many TV Shows.

“The buying public never really cared whether we were country or rock and

exas-based, four-piece band The Afters were propelled into the national spotlight with their INO/Sony Music Label Group debut “I Wish

We All Could Win.” The project spawned the swirling, melodic hit “Beautiful Love,” earning the band an enthusiastic following when the song was selected as the theme track for MTV’s “8th and Ocean.” “Beautiful Love” was also the most downloaded track of 2006 on the iTunes Inspirational charts and garnered the band an mtvU award as well.

The Afters’ sophomore release, “ Never Going Back To OK” (INO/Columbia Records) debuted in the Top 50 on the Billboard Top 200, and proved to be sensation on the silver screen with “Grey’s Anatomy” (ABC), “Dr. Phil,” “Army Wives” (Lifetime) and “Rachael Ray.”

The band’s third record, “Light Up the Sky”, bolstered two No. 1 radio hits, as well as placements on “The Biggest Loser” (NBC) and “You Deserve It” (ABC). A slew of media including Rolling Stone, Seventeen.com, E! News Live, TV Guide, Premiere Radio and more also picked up on covering The Afters.

The band released its fourth studio album, “Life Is Beautiful” in April 2013 via Fair Trade.

ark Chesnutt is one of Country’s true musical treasures. Critics have hailed him as a classic Country singer of the first order and some of

Country music’s most elite entertainers, from George Jones to George Strait, echo the sentiment.

Mark Chesnutt’s stature is easily gauged. He has 14 No. 1 hits, 23 top ten singles, four platinum albums and five gold records to his credit; he maintains a front-and-center presence with a hefty tour schedule year after year.

Country music critics and fans alike need look no further when it comes to Country music basics. If you ask Chesnutt, he’ll tell you, “It’s the music and the fans that have kept me around this long.”

In a creative forum that sometimes confuses style with substance, Mark Chesnutt possesses both. Remaining true to himself as a traditional country artist, while keeping the pace with the ever-changing country recording landscape, Mark Chesnutt has a knack for picking great songs, delivering them with world-class style and a heart-felt emotion that’s lived-in.

With a trademarked voice, Chesnutt has set the bar for his generation and those that follow in his footsteps shaping the music of today’s country music newcomers and the new country music format.

Mark Chesnutt’s personal integrity combined with his principal to record a genuine country song has made him a fixture on radio and in honky tonks across the globe, and an all-time country music fan favorite.

“Mark Chesnutt gave honky-tonk music back its soul,” noted music critic Robert K. Oermann. “When Chesnutt appeared on an arid musical landscape back in 1990, I dubbed him the hillbilly messiah.” Oermann stated. “I still feel that way today and I’ll feel that way decades from now.”

Now, some twenty-odd years later, Mark Chesnutt marches on to preserve and honor the splendid works of the sculpturing forefathers, George Jones and Waylon Jennings, to bring music from the honky tonks right back to where country music began.

Dubbed as one of the “most reliable country artists” (Craig Shelburne/CMT.com), Chesnutt does not disappoint. He is masterful in his natural ability to let his voice shape the words to create a moving musical motion picture (reminiscent of traditional country music standards such as Charlie Rich’s “Behind Closed Doors” and Vern Gosdin’s “Is It Raining At Your House”) and his current single, entitled “When The Lights Go Out (Tracie’s Song)” is the very essence of Chesnutt’s musical fiber as an autobiographical reflection of his life and loves-country music and his wife, Tracie.

ow Rider,” “Cisco Kid,” “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” “The World is a Ghetto,” “Slippin’ into Darkness,” “Spill the Wine”

What do you get when you take Funk, Jazz, R&B and Rock & Roll and mix it all together? Well, you get one of the greatest bands of all time; WAR has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide. Lonnie Jordan, original lead singer, keyboardist extraordinaire and musical director has always been the voice of WAR and is one of the most versatile and musically talented men of the twentieth century. His powerful voice presides over WAR’s political, historical and downright fun songbook. Whether listening to “Lowrider” on “Grand Theft Auto San Andreas” or on classic vinyl, WAR’s music is a timeless thread in the quilt of American pop culture.

WAR is not a band. WAR is a Movement! In 1969, Eric Burdon and WAR recorded and released their first album

entitled “Eric Burdon Declares WAR” featuring the number one single, “Spill The Wine.” Following its release, Eric Burdon and WAR embarked on an extensive tour of Europe and the UK recognize by England’s New Musical Express (1969) as “The best live act I ever saw”.

On September 16, 1970 Jimi Hendrix joined Eric Burdon and WAR for a jam session at London’s Famous Ronny Scotts Jazz Club. Unfortunately, this would be Jimi’s last jam session as he passed away later that night. Stunned and devastated by the death of his friend Jimi Hendrix, Eric Burdon made the heavy hearted decision to leave the band and return to Los Angeles. WAR continued

their European tour without their former front man before returning to the states.

Following Burdon’s departure, WAR’s career skyrocketed. In the early 1970’s the release of “Slippin’ into Darkness” and “Me and Baby Brother” represented their exhilarating sound and spoke to millions of Americans about the troubled times of Vietnam, Watergate and the ethnic tension that centered around inner cities. Then, in 1972 WAR released The World Is a Ghetto. Its second single, “The Cisco Kid,” shipped gold and the album attained the number one spot as Billboard magazine’s Album of the Year.

To date, WAR has sold nearly 50 million records and performs for 1,000,000 people a year. In addition, WAR has been honored with 17 gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards. These include: triple platinum The World Is A Ghetto, multi-platinum Why Can’t We Be Friends? All Day Music, and Deliver the World, and gold singles from their Quad platinum Greatest Hits Album. Also, “Summer,” their single from WAR’s Greatest Hits Live album sold gold and set a new record as the first single from any greatest hits package to become a hit.

Today, WAR is a permanent part of America’s pop cultural landscape and has profoundly impacted the music industry.

concert re-creation of the band Journey covering their greatest smash hits from 1978-1996, Journey Revisited amazed last year’s

Fairgoers, thrilling the crowd by performing encore after encore and leaving them begging for more.

Journey dominated arenas worldwide in the late 70s, 80s and the amazing comeback in the mid 90s. What if you could see a band like that again?

Journey Revisited returns to the Fair’s Concert Series stage this year, back by popular demand, to answer that question for this year’s audience.

Journey still tours, but those that still long for the “voice” of Journey, Steve Perry, that fronted that amazing band back in the day should now treat themselves to Journey Revisited — “Reliving The Glory Days of Journey.” Armed with the trademark soulfulness and range of Perry’s vocals, this tribute to Journey combines the amazing vocal talents and dynamic instrumentals that separate this band from all other cover/tribute bands.

Jeff Salado founded the group in 2005. Jeff along with his band mates take their audiences on a rhythmic ride to an era when rock dominated the radio airwaves. They are hailed by critics and fans alike as the most authentic and endearing Journey tribute band in the world.

yvyn Skynyrd is the quintes-sential Lynyrd

Skynyrd tribute band. Based out of Southern California, this group of consummate musicians and soulful rockers embody the talent and energy of the original band, who sadly lost members much too soon. Lyvyn Skynyrd evokes Ronnie Van Zant’s profound and powerful vocals, while highlighting the dual lead guitar riffs that Lynyrd Skynyrd made famous. They celebrate the entire catalogue including the hits like “Simple Man,” “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Tuesday’s gone,” as well as deeper cuts such as “The Needle and the Spoon” and “Poison Whiskey.”

Authenticity to the music is at the core of every Lyvyn Skynyrd performance and each musician truly personifies an original member. Lead singer Andrew Mazzarelli (Ronnie Van Zant) channels the power and humanity that Andrew felt when he first saw Ronnie perform. Fellow vocalists Shaun Bernadou (Leslie Hawkins), Deborah Angelo (Jo Jo Billingsley) and Liz Parks (Cassie Gaines) bring additional depth and charisma to the stage, while bass player Gregory J. Lemke (Leon Wilkeson) and drummer Max Burnette (Artimus Pyle) provide a strong rhythmic backbone that enhances the experience. Rick Dekker (Steve Gaines) and Neil Nyssen (Gary Rossington) expertly intertwine impressive guitar licks with vitality and wisdom. Nyssen also captures the trademark slide guitar that turned songs such as “Free Bird” into anthems. Roger Mielke (Billy Powell) does an exceptional job providing a Southern rock vibe on the keys.

If you are looking for a genuine Lynyrd Skynyrd rock n’ roll experience, look no further than Lyvyn Skynyrd. They will take you through a time capsule of songs from the 1970s that no other band can replicate. The music of Lynyrd Skynyrd is enjoyed by children from seven all the way to adults in their 70s. Once you have experienced the music it is something that you will never forget.

organic feel. “Knowing that analog was going to be our foundation-and that we’d have the ability to easily record and re-record digitally-gave us the confidence to take more chances. For instance, we used an acoustic bass on the entire record and put horns on every song. By doing so, we got a lot of organic sounds,” Jerrod shares. “I want people to realize the time and effort that we put into this album, from the beginning of the first song to the very last note.”

Such exquisite attention to detail is evident throughout the 12 songs that make up Free The Music, all of them written or co-written by Jerrod. From the funky opening title track to sun-drenched first single “Shinin’ on Me,” the songs represent an artist committed to stretching musical boundaries while simultaneously honoring country’s past.

The empowering “Get on Up” employs a unique ascending-and-descending guitar riff and a surprisingly well-fitting Mellotron. “Real Women Drink Beer,” cleverly combining elements of reggae with the Bakersfield Sound, would sit nicely on a Dwight Yoakam album. “Honky Tonk

Fever” has prominent jazz horns and remarkably different tempos. And “I’m All About You,” featuring Grammy-winning vocalist Colbie Caillat, is a piano-driven, laid-back love song.

But it is the knockout ballad and Niemann’s current chart-rising single “Only God Could Love You More” that, for the first time, truly showcases Jerrod’s voice as the nuanced instrument it is.

“Some people sound the same on every song, but I like to be a chameleon, like an actor in a role. For ‘Only God Could Love You More,’ we didn’t put any harmonies on it and used my original track-ing vocal. ‘Lover, Lover’ had a bunch of harmony parts, so I thought it’d be interesting to have zero here, especially with the French horns and the other orchestral things we have going on,” Jerrod says. “Some songs just work better with one vocal. If you listen to Garth Brooks’ ‘The Dance,’ that doesn’t have any harmonies on it either. Not that I’m comparing myself to Garth by any means.”

Still, the allusion to the 1990s superstar isn’t out of bounds. Jerrod co-wrote one of Garth’s biggest hits, “Good Ride Cowboy,” and penned two others for the Country Music Hall of Famer, along with songs for Blake Shelton, Lee Brice, John Anderson and Jamey Johnson.

“The most important thing to me is songwrit-ing. But no one can ever hear a song without a

vehicle, whether it’s me or somebody else singing it,” admits Jerrod, who, as a writer, has more than 10 million albums sold to his credit. “If someone told me I couldn’t write a song ever again, or had to choose between playing and writing, I don’t know what I’d choose.”

Fortunately, no one is forcing him to. Jerrod is free to pursue both of his passions on stage and in the writing room, using his gift with a lyric and melody to free the music, expand people’s minds, and deliver an album that, while occasionally unconventional, is undeniably country.

“For me, it’s all about the song. You can put all the bells and whistles on an album that you want, but if the songs aren’t there, it’s not going to work,” Jerrod says, discussing the versatility of country music. “You can take all of these songs, go into a studio and record them with Nashville’s amazing studio musicians, and Free The Music would sound just like a modern-country record. And that’s fine. But I like to experiment.”

Jerrod cracks a wry grin at this admission. Clearly, he’s comfortable with his role as a musi-cal scientist-an artist who absorbs all styles and sounds, and forms them into his own creation.

“When your ears are always on, everything seeps into your brain,” he says with a laugh. “And my ears are always on.”

roll” says Gray. “They called us a Southern rock band, but we have always played every-thing from country, jazz, blues, Rock & Roll and all things in-between. As we’ve become older,” Gray grins, eyes twinkling, “our Southern heritage seems to come out even more. But no matter how old we get, we can still rock your socks off.” Gray also notes that people have gotten “married and buried” to classic MTB songs like “Desert Skies” and “Can’t You See”. After 40 years, The Marshall Tucker Band continues to be played on classic rock and country radio, and they have never stopped touring.

Today the band records on its own RAMBLIN’ RECORDS Label which is distrib-uted by SONY by way of a joint venture with SHOUT! FACTORY and continues to re-cord new material and continues to regularly tour the country to the delight of their fans, old and new.
