I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday season. We have reached the end of the second quarter, which means we are halfway through the school year. Third quarter is a crucial quarter for your young child. Please be sure to stay in regular contact with your child’s teacher. Listen to what your child says, ask questions about school, and be sure to take time to discuss his/her day. Your interest and support is important for your child. Additionally, if you have concerns about your child and school, do not wait to contact the teacher. Regularly check your child’s backpack for homework, completed/graded work, and notes from the teacher. Now that the activities of the holidays have passed, it’s time to look ahead to our second Bingo for Books. Thank you to all the parents who attended our first one in October. The turnout was great and everyone had a wonderful time. Please join us on January 23 rd from 6:307:30 pm as we once again host Bingo for Books. Greetings  Gopher  Families!    Happy  New  Year!      Monthly  Theme  and  Focus:  During   the   month   of   January,   all   SAES   students   are   learning   about  conflict.     Conflict   is   defined   as   “a   disagreement   between   two   or  more  people”.     Students   learned   that   the   majority   of   arguments   and   fights  begin  with  a  disagreement.    Students  were  then  introduced  to  the  “Rules  for  Fighting  Fair”.    The  first  rule  is  “Identify  the  Problem”.    Through  a  lot  of   discussion,   students   were   able   to   identify   the   specific   disagreement  that   led   to   a   fight   (verbal   or   physical)   with   their   siblings   or   friends.    Students   also   discussed   “fouls"   that   stop   a   conflict   from   being   solved.    This  lesson  was  part  one  of  a  two-‐part  lesson  on  conflict  resolution.    Next  month,   students   will   learn   and   practice   several   strategies   for   solving  conflicts  before  they  become  arguments  and/or  physical  fights.    Student  of  the  Month:  This  year,  our   school  theme  of  Rock  S.T.A.R.   (Students  Taking  Academic  Responsibility)   is  being  tied  to  Student  of  the  Month.    These  have  been  chosen  based  on  their  commitment  to  academic  success.    They  work  hard  to  achieve  their  personal  academic  goals  and  we  are  very  proud  of  them!    For  December/January,  our  SOM’s  are:      Kindergarten:  Laryssa  Lupercio  and  Elliot  Vashon  1st  Grade:    Cardin  Reynolds  and  Justin  Petters  2nd  Grade:  Miranda  Hanley  and  Auston  Delgado  3rd  Grade:  Aaliyah  Rainey  and  Anthony  Gonzalez  4th  Grade:    Avery  Smith  and  Miguel  Acuna  5th  Grade:    Brooke  Hudson  and  John  Young    Food  For  Thought:  Disagreements  happen.    If  every  person  agreed  on  everything,  the  world  would   be   pretty   bland!     However,   how   we   handle   our   disagreements  with  others   sets  a  huge  example   for  our  kids.     It   is   important   to  model  respectful  communication  during  a  disagreement.    Remember:  no  fouls!    Take  care,  Lorynn  Gutierrez  [email protected]  352.524.5352

Reading in the Kitchen

When school began, one parent posted the cafeteria menu on the refrigerator. Her daughter, Carla, was excited that she could read some of the words. For example, she knew pizza from delivery boxes and milk from seeing it on milk cartons. Her parents realized that the kitchen was full of things to read—which is ideal because people spend a lot of time there. When shown the recipe box and grocery list, Carla found more words she knew, like bake and apples. Now, when Mom is cooking, she sometimes asks Carla to hand her ingredients. She’ll tell her to find the Swiss cheese in the refrigerator or the pinto beans in the pantry, for instance. Carla is learning to sound out words and use pictures as clues to help her read.

A Recipe for Respect

Ava listens quietly when her teacher talks. Ben claps for each performer at his piano recital. These children show respect for others. Here’s how you can encourage your youngster to do the same. Demonstrate Your child will learn respectful behavior by watching the way you treat others. When she makes a mistake, for instance, gently tell her what she’s done wrong—and out of earshot of others. Also, let her see you respect ideas that are different from your own. For example, point out that you’re happy a friend is voting in an election even though you each favor a different candidate. Notice When you see your child acting respectfully, let him/her know that you’ve noticed (“I like the way you asked before borrowing her your sister’s sweater.”) Your words and attention will encourage your child to show respect in the future. Tip: If you see disrespectful behavior on TV (a child rolling his eyes or talking back to a parent), tell your child it is not okay to act that way in real life. Then, ask your child to be on the lookout for respectful action by characters. How many good examples can you find together before the program ends?
