ScammerHammerPreventsTelephoneFraud,ProtectsSeniorCitizensUWresearchershavedevelopedanewservicetoprotectseniorsfromtelephonefraud.SEATTLE(NEWSWIRE)–May1,2018–Seniorcitizensarenowgettingextrahelpinthefightagainsttelephonefraud.ResearchersintheDepartmentofSecurityServicesattheUniversityofWashingtonhaveinventedanewdevice,calledthe"ScammerHammer"thatplugsintoalandlinetelephone.Thisnewtechnologyisdesignedtopreventseniorcitizensfrombecomingvictimsoftelephonefraud,an$8billionproblemintheUS.Everyyear,tensofthousandsofseniorcitizenslosemoneytotelephonescamsrangingfromafewdollarstotheirlifesavings.Scammerswillsayanddoanythingoverthephonetocheatseniorsoutofmoney.Untilnow,therehasbeennoeffectivewayforseniorstoreportthesescams,andfindingandarrestingthesecriminalshasbeenalmostimpossible.NowwiththeScammerHammer,thereisawaytotrackandarrestthesecriminals.Thedevice,whichisroughlythesizeofagolfball,ispluggedintothebackofatelephone,connectingittoalandlinejack.Ifasuspectedscammercallsaphonewiththedeviceinstalled,thecallisblocked,andallinformationaboutthecallissentdirectlytotheFBIforanalysis–theseniorcitizenneverreceivesthecall.Ifascammer’scalldoesgetthrough,theseniorpressesabuttononthedeviceandthecallisroutedtoanFBIcallcenterthatistrainedonusingsocialengineeringtocollectinformationfromthescammer.UsingthisinformationtheFBIisabletostopandarresttelephonescammers.LawrenceFlanagan,oneoftheUWresearcherswhodevelopedtheproduct,hadthistosay,“Thisisanamazingpieceoftechnologythatprotectsseniors.We'regoingtomakesurethateveryseniorcitizenhasthis.”AfterreceivingaScammerHammer,VioletWest,a74-year-oldretiredschoolteacher,said,“Inowfeelsafer.Iusedtoget2-3callsperweekfromscammers.Istoppedansweringmyphone.Now,withthehelpfromtheScammerHammer,thesecallshavestopped.”MoreinformationabouttheScammerHammerservicecanbefoundathttp://www.uw.edu/scammerhammer/
