    Besides Chinese New Year, the Chinese celebrate many other festivals including Cheng

    Beng, the Hungry Ghost Festival and the Mooncake Festival.

    Cheng Beng is normally celebrated in the first week of April. It is celebrated to

    commemorate the dead. On this day, the Chinese families faithfully form a beeline to the graves

    of their loved ones. Theyspruce up the graves and offer food and drinks to the dead. They leave

    the offerings behind for the dead ancestors.

    The Hungry Ghost Festival is another festival that is connected with the dead. The

    Chinese believe that on this day, the Gates of hell are opened to drive the hungry ghosts come

    to earth in search of food. To stop the ghosts from coming to their houses, the Chinese offer

    food to these hungry ghosts on the streets.

    The next festival in line is the Mooncake Festival. The special features of this festival are

    the mooncakes and the lanterns. Mooncakes can be bought easily as they are readily

    available. This festival is celebrated to honour the Moon Goddess. On this day, women offer

    fruits, mooncakes and chestnuts to the Goddess while children play with brightly-lit lanterns.

    Sometimes, there will be a lantern procession.

    Read the passage and complete the following task.

    Bones can mend and grow again after they break because they are alive. They

    are strong as certain types of steel but only a fifth as heavy. Bones are made out of a

    mixture of a tough protein, called collagen, and tiny hard mineral crystals which contain

    calcium and phosphorus. The mixture gives the bones their strength and prevents them

    from breaking easily. This is why we need to ensure sufficient calcium in our diet.

    Otherwise, we will have brittle bones.

    There is a soft tissue called bone marrow at the center of many bones. Thistissue contains blood vessels which supply the bone with oxygen and food. It is in the

    bone marrow that new white and red blood cells are made.

    The bones of a baby are not as hard as those of an adult. They are made of

    softer substance called cartilage. As the baby grows, the soft cartilage is replaced by

    harder bone material.

    Funny paper people will make excellent gifts and presents. In order to make them, you will need afew materials. You need to get some old magazines, a pair of scissors, an art block and a tube of glue.

    First, look through the old magazines and select several pictures of different people. It is best thatyou select pictures that are almost of the same size. Next, carefully cut out the selected pictures of people.

    Thirdly, cut off all the heads and put them together in one pile. Then, cut off all their legs and putthem together in another pile. Repeat the process for the arms and bodies.

    After that, pick out the different parts of the body from different people. Match the arms and legs tofit each different head and body.

    Finally, put together the different parts of the people that you have chosen. Paste them on the artblock as a whole person. Your funny paper people are now ready. You can give them as gifts to familyand friends.
