Venezuelans vote for Maduro
Opposition candidate calls election illegitimate, demands recount
Venezuelans vote for a successor for the late Hugo Chavez (pron. HYOO-goh SHAH-vez). And, the
loser of the election calls it illegitimate and demands a recount. The country’s National Electoral
Council says that Nicolas Maduro (pron. NIK-oh-lus muh-DUR-oh) garnered 50-point-7 percent of the
vote. Maduro is Chavez’s hand-picked successor.
The opposition candidate, Henrique Capriles Radonski (pron. hen-REEK-ay KUH-preel ruh-DON-ski),
reportedly captured 49-point-1 percent of the vote. The council’s top official calls the results
irreversible. Still, Radonski is vowing to contest them. Maduro tells supporters that his victory is
clear.
However, if there is a recount, he states he would have nothing to hide. Fireworks erupt above the
Venezuelan capital, while Maduro said he would head to Chavez’s tomb to pay his respects. Maduro
called on citizens to respect the results and respond peacefully. It’s the second time in six months that
voters in Venezuela cast votes in a presidential election.
Chavez, who ruled for 14 years, won re-election in October. After his death last month, authorities
announced new elections to choose a successor.

GUN DEBATE: Discussions in Senate to begin tomorrow
Senators are scheduled to begin debate on guns this week. Starting tomorrow, they will discuss
measures that could expand background checks on gun purchases, create a federal gun trafficking
status, improve school safety, and form a national commission on mass violence. Family members of
the Sandy Hook massacre made passionate pleas last week on Capitol Hill for stricter gun regulations.
The rampage at the Connecticut elementary school in December triggered the recent uproar over gun
violence. On CBS’ Face the Nation, Pennsylvania Republican Senator Pat Toomey says he is
confident that he and West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin will be able to get enough G-O-P support
to pass an amendment that would expand background checks for gun purchases.

SHAPE UP: Joint Chiefs chair wants to change evaluations of top officers
The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff plans to change how generals and admirals are evaluated.

response by General Martin Dempsey is tied to a series of scandals involving notable officers. They

Dempsey wants regularly scheduled performance evaluations of high-ranking officers. They would
not only look at their decision-making abilties, but also professional character. A spokesman for the

STUDY: Many Americans skip meds to save money
Many Americans need money to pay their electric bill or put to food on the table. Thus, the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention says they’re not taking their medications. New research shows
that cash-strapped Americans often skip doses of expensive prescription drugs or take less than was
prescribed by their doctor.
A lack of insurance coverage was a key factor in whether patients didn’t take their meds. The C-D-C
says that last year, Americans spent $45 billion out of pocket on prescription drugs. Overall, almost
