Stress Inventory Client information
Often it is an accumulation of stressors and problems that lead to the symptoms
experienced by people with stress-related complaints. Often people can no longer see the
source of their stress but view it as a threatening whole that creates tension. This can lead
to avoidance behavior. Making a list of all your problems can help you to get an overview,
and can lead to a sense of manageability. You can also use the list to begin identifying points for taking action.
Instructions
Make a list of 5 – 7 issues that have contributed to your situation (fill in inventory form 1
below)
These can be work-related issues or issues related to other areas of your life
Include both major problems and minor irritations
The list should contain specific problems; do not include generalities such as „work‟ or
„my customers‟ but describe specific situations like: “my manager comments on how
I…., and I feel uncomfortable because he is not clear in what he wants” or “customer X
always wants work done by yesterday, despite the fact that I have asked them to
contact me earlier in the process” or “if I come home from work at night, my son
has…..”
Begin to identify how you can address the problems that you can influence (fill in form 2
below)
Finally, consider the problems that lend themselves to immediate action, and determine which problems are suitable for future action and which difficulties cannot be changed.

Stress Inventory Form 1
Identify five to seven concrete stress situations
1. I always have to rush in the morning to take my kids to school and be in time at work. I panic when the traffic is busy and I arrive at work late.
2. My manager comments on how I sort my mail, and I feel uncomfortable because he is not clear in what he wants.
3. Customer X always wants work done by yesterday, despite the fact that I have asked
them to contact me earlier in the process.
4. If I come home from work at night, my son has never done his homework and only has
been playing computer games. I worry about his grades in school. I have talked to him about this many times but it does not solve the problem.
5. If I have a busy day ahead I find it hard to fall asleep as I end up worrying and tossing and turning

Stress Inventory Form 2
Consider how your problems can be solved and the chance that they can be solved:
A: Problems that lend themselves to immediate action
B: Problems that can be solved but are suitable for future action, for example that need
support from others or you need to learn certain skills to solve these problems
C: Difficulties that cannot be changed.
Stress situation Possible solution
Chance
1. I always have to rush in the
morning to take my kids to school
and be in time at work. I panic when
the traffic is busy and I arrive at
work late.
I can try and find carpool for my kids
on a few days per week
I can talk to my supervisor if I can
start later
B
2. My manager comments on how I
sort my mail, and I feel
uncomfortable because he is not
clear in what he wants.
I can talk to my manager and explain
that I do not understand what he
wants me to change in my way of
working
B
3. Customer X always wants work
done by yesterday, despite the fact
that I have asked them to contact
me earlier in the process.
I can talk to this customer again and if
this does not work I will ask my
manager to talk to them
B
4. If I come home from work at
night, my son has never done his
homework and only has been playing
computer games. I worry about his
grades in school. I have talked to
him about this many times but it
does not solve the problem.
I can talk to other parents; maybe he
can do homework there a few days per
week.
B
5. If I have a busy day ahead I find it
hard to fall asleep as I end up worrying and tossing and turning
I can do an evening walk for
distraction. I can write down what
worries me and find solutions a few
hours before I go to bed.I can have a
piece of paper and pen besides my
bed to write down what worries me
