The AB One SystemBloody KingdomisthesecondsetofrulesusingtheABOnesystem.PlayersmaybefamiliarwiththerulemechanicsfromFather Tilly-theThirtyYearsWarrules,butbriefly,the system is designed to be fast and simple to usewhilemaintainingapleasingdegreeofdetailandperiod“flavour”.Muchoftheperiodfeel isdeliveredusingthe“war-tokens”system.Theseareaseriesofcardsortokensthatcanbeusedtointroduceadiverserangeofeventsorinfluences,frompowderexplosionstodrunkengeneralsorevenmutiniesandturncoats.Althoughtheseelementsdonotunduly influence thegame, theycanhaveaneffectatacrucialtimeandbecausetheareseparatedfromthemainrules-theydonotaddtimeandcomplexitytothegame.Ihopeyouenjoy!

Bloody KingdomHaving covered the Thirty Years War period with theFather Tilly rules, it seemed a logical step to extendthe rules to cover its near neighbour - the English CivilWar (British Civil War, War of the Three Kingdoms etc).Initially I thought thiswouldsimplybeacaseofwritinganECWsupplementforFather Tilly.However,themoreIthoughtaboutit,themoredifferencesbetweenthetwosubjectsbegantoappearuntilIeventuallydecidedtherewasenoughdifferencestowarrantadifferentsetofrules-andBloody Kingdomistheresult.

OneofthemaindistinctionIwantedtobringoutbetweenthetwoperiodswasthedifference introopquality.ThesoldiersthatfoughtinGermanywereoftenprofessionals, reasonably well trained and experienced in warfare. InBritainhowever, althoughmanythatfoughthadparticipatedin thefighting on the continent, themajority had not -andthisledtosomeinterestingdistinctions.Forexample,a unit could be led by officers and NCOs who had hadextensiveexperiencefightinginGermany, butthetroopsthattheycommandedmayhavehadnobattleexperienceat all - how would this combination of experience andinexperience play out on the battlefield? Or some unitscouldbequiteexperiencedbutnotverywelltrained,forexampleRoyalistcavalryregimentswouldlargelyconsistofthelandowningclasseswhowerewellusedtochargingaboutthecountrysideonhorsebackinpursuitofgameofvarioussorts-howwouldthiscombinationofexperienceand lack or training or discipline affect them in battle?TheseconsiderationsarenotaddressedintheFather Tillyrules,because,inmyopiniontheydidnotneedtobe.ButintheEnglishCivilWar,certainlyduringtheearlystages-theseareimportantandnecessaryfactors.

ContentsIncluded in the Bloody Kingdom rule book are sectionsdetailingtheorganisationoftroops, thetypeofformationsandtacticsdeployed.AlloftherulesnecessarytorunthegameincludingInitiative,GameSequenceandMovement,Shooting and Combat, Orders and Morale for individualunitsandthearmyasawhole. Figure Basing & ScalePlayers have the option of basing all of their figuresindividuallyorinmultiplefigureblocks.Eitherisacceptable, howeverBloody Kingdom isasystemthatrequiresfigureremovalsoallunitswillrequireatleastsomeindividuallybased figures. Foot figures should be based on 20mmsquare bases, cavalry on 25mm by 50mm rectangularbases.Artillery pieces are based separately to the crew(which are based as other foot figures). The size of theartillerybaseisnotimportantbutmustbeappropriatetothesizeofthegun.However,ifplayershavefiguresbasedonslightlydifferentsizedbases-thisisnotaproblem-aslongastheyarethesameastheiropponents.

Figurescalevariesbetweenonefiguretothirtymentoonetofifty.Itisuptotheplayerstochooseanddependsonthesizeofbattletobefought.

Movement BasesMovement bases are pieces of card that the figures areplacedonandwhichdefinetheexactareathattheunitoccupies.

Unit Type Figures per movement baseCloseorderFoot 4-6OpenorderFoot 4SkirmishFoot 2DisciplinedHorse 3Horse 2

There are two types of movement base - infantry andcavalry. Infantry bases are two inches by three inches,cavalryarethreeinchessquare.Itisonthesebasesthatfiguresareplacedtodenotethattheyareorganisedintounits. For example, foot regiments will have betweenfourandsixfiguresperbase(dependingonunitsize)andhorseregimentswillhavetwofiguresperbaseorthreeifparticularlydisciplinedcavalry(suchas“Ironsides”).

If the players figures are not individually based but aremountedinblocksoffourorsixfiguresforexample, itisnot necessary to arrange themonmovement bases, themainconsiderationisthattheyconformtothebasingoftheopposingarmy.

Unit OrganisationThedepthofeachunit(thenumberoffigurerankstheunithas)isalsoimportant.

Unit Type Figure DepthInfantryregiment 2-3EarlyParliamentarycavalryregiment 2LaterParliamentarycavalryregiment 1Royalistcavalryregiment 1

Forexample, infantryregimentswillcompriseofbetweentwo and three ranks of figures on the movement base.Playerscanusethistorepresenteithersixoreightrankpike and shot units. Early Parliamentary cavalry will bedeployed in units two ranks deep while Royalist cavalrywillusuallybedeployedinonerank.
