In Search of Love

___________________________________________

There is a small village cum market called Athmal Gola

Bazaar in the Patna District of Bihar State. This bazaar is

situated between Bakhtiyar Pur and Barh. It is on the

National Highway Road from Patna to Mokamah. It is

surrounded by many small villages. Nichla Tola and

Kahartoli are situated on the north side of the Bazaar.

Daulat pur and Mahuli are situated on the south side of

the Bazaar. Ganj par and Budhra are situated on the west

side of the Bazaar. Kalyan Pur and Laheriya Tola are

situated on the east side of the Bazaar. There are some

more Small Villages and Tolas also around this bazaar.

During the year of 1955, almost 4000 people were

living in this small bazaar and the surrounding area.

Most of them were very poor and without proper shelter.

There were some farmers (Owners of Farm Land) in the

surrounding area of the bazaar with the cultivated farm

land. Athmal Gola bazaar was fully occupied by Bania,

Teli, Halwai and Laheri (cast). Nichla Tola was fully

dominated by the rich Rajput with farm land. Kahartoli

was occupied by only Kahars, working as laborers and

few were working in out station with little better jobs.

Their ladies were working as water filler in the most of

the houses in this area. Gents were working as land

labours. Few of them were in good job in Kolkata.

Daulat pur was dominated with few Rajput and

others were from schedule casts. Rajputs were having

farm land and schedule cast were working as Labour in

the Rajput’s Farm Land. Mahuli was occupied fully by

Rajputs, Bhumihar, Kayasth and others (cast). Brahmins

were in every village but their number was in one or two

family. Ganj Par was dominated with yadava and Raj put

mixed; few Bania and Muslim were also living there.

Buddhra was occupied mainly by Rajput and Yadava.

Few Bania, Barahi, Pasi and Muslims were also living

there. Kalyanpur was dominated by Rajput. Few Yadav

and Teli were also living there. Laheria Tola was also

dominated by Rajput and Yadava but few others cast

like Bania, Gareri, and Laheri were also living with

them. In total, Rajput Cast was very strong and they

were dominating all together in this Area those days.

There were three schools in the west side of this

Bazaar. These schools were running from long time but I

could see them in 1954 so I cannot tell more about them.

There was Lower Primary school where the students join

as child class now it may be called UKG at the age of

four and studied up to Third class. There was another

School attached, called Middle Primary School, where

students studied from Fourth class to Seventh class. Next

to this, there was another school called Shri Faujdar

Singh High School, where students studied from Eighth

class to Eleventh class. After passing Tenth class

students enter in Eleventh class. They have to pass Half

Yearly Exam in May and later they have to pass Sent up

examination in October to appear and qualify for the

Board Exam in the month of March or April in the

following year. Once student pass this Matriculation

Board exam whether first class, second class or third

class, were eligible to join I.A (Intermediate Arts) or I.Sc

(Intermediate Arts or Science).

Those days there was separate admission for the

Science and Arts in the Eighth Class. All students, those

who used to be better in Math and Science subjects, they

used to join in science class and the rest students used to

join Arts. Hindi 1, Hindi 2, English 1, English 2, Social

studies and Sanskrit were compulsory for all the

students. Math 1, Math 2, Physics and Chemistry were

being taught to the Science Students. Math 1, History

Geography and Economics was being taught to the Arts

Students. Specialty was in our school, Trigonometry and

Mechanics subjects were being taught in the high school.

This practice was only in Bihar State and not in any

other States of India. This was known to me in 1970,

when I was getting Educational Training at one of the

Naval Training Establishment INS Hamla at Bombay.

There were two wells nearby the schools. One was

in front of Middle School and other was just left front

side of the High school. In front of the Middle School

there were small gardens (before getting inside the

school). This school was on the side of main road. The

main road was connecting to PATNA AND

MOKAMAH cities. Back side of the Middle School,

there was a very big farm land.

In front of the High School there was a small

ground with full green grass, which was used for

Physical Training or for any other cultural programs.

Back side of the High School there was farm land. Left

side of the school the same Patna-Mokamah road was

passing and the right side of the school was farm land.

There was no toilet facility in any of the school. In

the Middle and Lower school, all the boys were using

farm land for urinals which was just opposite of school.

All the boys had to cross the road to reach the other side.

Girls used to go behind the school for urinals. Girls were

studying only up to Seventh class. In fact we never

realize any abnormality or sort come of toilets and

urinals because we were from the village and were

habituated of the same systems. After few years every

one realized that it is necessary for the girls to provide

few toilet rooms for the girls. The toilets were

constructed for the girl students and for the teachers of

the Middle and High School. The boys remained in the

same practice till we left the schools in 1967.

Most of the Teachers were from Rajput cast. There

were very few from other Cast, like Brahmin, Bhumihar,

Yadav and Kayastha. In our Lower School there were

three teachers and those teachers name were Sahadev

Singh Rajput, Rajendra Singh Bhumihar and Mahendra

Singh Rajput. In middle School there were eight

teachers. They were Bhuvneshwar Prasad Singh Rajput

as Head Master, Ram Briksh Singh Rajput, Shivdhari

Singh Rajput, Aanandi Singh Rajput, Jhulan Singh

Bhumihar, Chetnarayan Singh Kurmi, Maulabi Sahib

Muslim and Ram Chandar Rai Yadav.

In High School there were twelve teachers. They

were Ram Briksh Sharma Brahaman as Head Master,

Das Babu Kayasth, Brij Nandan Shastri Brahman, Ram

Naresh Mishra Brahman, Ravindra Sharma Bhumihar,

Indra lal Singh Rajput, Tarak Singh Rajput, Flendra

Singh Rajput, Ramrup Singh Rajput, Ram Sagar Singh

Rajput, Rajendra Singh Bhumihar and Nageshwar Singh

Bhumihar.

All the teachers were from different casts but there

were no differences in their behaviors. They were all

together very much interested in teaching to the students

and with only one angle. It might be different way of

teaching but ultimate aim was for them to bring the

students up and make them a well educated, better

student and become a gentle person in their behavior.

There were 80 Students in Lower School and

around 250 Students in Middle School. Also there were

300 and plus Students in High School. In Lower School

students were from one kilometer radius of area. In

Middle School, Students were from three to four

kilometers radius of area. In High School students were

from seven to eight kilometers radius of area. Some of

the students were from Ram Nagar Diyara. They had to

cross the Ganga River while coming and going back

from the school. Almost all Students were having

bicycles those belonging to Ram Nagar Diyara. They

used to drive the cycles from home till Ganga Shore and

load their bicycles on the boat. They had to cross the

Ganga River with their cycles through the boat and come

to SABNIMA GHAT. There after they had to drive

around four kilometer to reach the School. They had to

come and go back on the same rout on same way for six

days in a week except Sunday and holidays.

Though, they did not feel very hard because they

were young and laborious students. I still remember

during rainy days, it was too difficult to reach

school but they used come to school and attend the

classes regularly. Today I feel it was a very hard task for

them to complete their education part. They completed

their matriculation and I am sure they must have reached

to their target and achieved their goals.

Most of the teachers were local, but there were few

teachers from other places. In Lower School all the

teachers were from local area. In Middle School two of

the teachers (Sri Chet Narayan Singh and Jhulan Singh)

were belonging from long distance. They were from 50

kilometer away. They lived in student's house and used

to get free food and accommodation from student’s

family and in return they used to teach all students of

their family free. Similarly there were three teachers in

high school belonging to long distance. They were also

living in student’s home and they used to get free food

and accommodation too. In High School most of the

teacher were giving tuition to the students and earning

little more to live happy life but in Middle school there

were few teachers who were interested in the tuition.

There were some teachers, who were very much

interested in cultural programs. In the High School,

many Dramas were played by them. They were Indra Lal

Singh, Ram Sagar Singh and Radhe Shyam Singh, who

were more interested in cultural activities. They played

the lead role of Maha Rana Pratap in Arawali ka Sher, as

Akbar in Mahan Akbar, as Ashoka in the Ashoka the

Great as Shivaji in Swarajya and Bhīma in Dropati Chir

Haran. Most of the students played the supporting

roles or villain role in all the dramas. Raju also played a

small role of Dropati in Dropati Chir Haran. It was his

first role and that too as a Dropadi. This made him to

learn history of India and later in old age he too taught

the history to many of the drop out students during the

years of 2007 to 2011 at his ease time in the southern

states.

After some year Raju came to know about Indra Lal

Singh, one of his teachers was mentally disturbed. He

met him in Yaduwansh Lal Manihari Shop, when he

came on leave at his native place Athmal Gola. Raju

talked to him and tried to know about his health and

mind condition. Indra Lal Singh was practically feeling

and narrating himself sometime as Akbar, some time as

Rana Pratap and also sometime Ashoka the Great. It was

all because he played the role of these Great Men and he

started equalizing himself as these Great Men. He was

also a very good singer. He was seen singing when he

was going to Ganga Ghat with a dead body for

incrimination. Raju felt very sad when he saw him

suffering mentally at the last time. Later Indra Lal Singh

was passed away after some years due to long illness. He

lived with his wife and children at English village where

he was married.

Raju met Ram Sagar Singh also, when he was on

holidays visit at Athmal Gola. Ram Sagar Singh was

very happy seeing Raju as a Navy Man. Raju was posted

in Bombay at that time. He told Raju about his son, who

was learning the Art of acting (Film) in Bombay/Pune.

He was very much interested to see his son as an actor.

After few years his son got qualified and became an

actor. He acted in some of the Serials (Stories) in

Bombay for almost three to four years. Ram Sagar Singh

was very happy because he wanted his son to be an

actor. He achieved his goal (wish) to see his son as an

actor. He advised Raju to meet his son in Bombay but

Raju could not meet his son in Bombay or in Pune due to

short of time.

Ram Sagar Singh asked Raju many time to meet his

son. Ram Sagar Singh remained happy for very short

period. After four or five years when Raju visited at his

home place Athmal Gola and inquired about his son, He

came to know his son died in an accident in Bombay

while driving on high speed Motorcycle. Ram Sagar

Singh was shocked to hear this sad news and remained

very much upset and in pain for long time. Ram Sagar

Singh was unable to bear this heavy loss. For long time

Raju did not meet him because he was unable to face

him. Raju promised him that he could be meeting his son

in Bombay. Raju could not do so. Raju will definitely

meet Ram Sagar Singh in his next visit to Athmal Gola.

Ram Sagar Singh was alive till 2014 but not able to

walk. He was not moving anywhere. He remains at

home and his second son also joined the film industries

but not known much whether he is in Bombay or Bihar.

Most of the teachers lived good life and retired. Later

some of them have passed away. Few of them are alive.

____________________________________________ In our students days, all of us used to enjoy in our

studies because our Science Teachers, Sri Ramrup Singh

and Flendra Singh, were very friendly with us. We were

free to ask them any question at any time. Raju was the

weakest student in his class. When Raju joined high

school he was holding 12th position among the 22

students but due to his own domestic problem, he fallen

to 22nd

rank (last). There was one more reason behind it.

All of the 21 students were getting tuition from the

science teachers for 3 hours every day, whereas Raju

was working in his shop and earning for himself and for

his family. Raju has gone to back seat in the four year.

Raju was not having sufficient money or sufficient

time to go for tuition and studies. Most of the students

were very brilliant and very laborious. Raju too was

laborious and intelligent but for his earning he had

limited time for his studies. Their aims were very high

and they were supported by their teachers and families.

Raju was an exceptional. He had very low aim because

of his lower support from his family and also from

teachers.

All the students used to fight every day for some or other

reason in the school but their friendship during studies
