Dedication

m

I like to dedicate this book to my parents who taught

me that you don’t know what you can be until you

give it a try. I also dedicate this to all my friends

who entrusted me with this book.

Finally to all the SELFIES with love.

Waiting

m

Typing ....(on the screen)

By glancing at my screen, I could feel the

adrenaline thrust creating ripples in my veins. My

fingers started tapping the chair that I was sitting

on resembling a driller that wanted to pierce

through the land beneath it. The whole room

equated itself to a library and the sound of my heart

beat started resonating with the strike of the

second's needle of the wall clock above me.

It's been 123 days since I had proposed her and

now I am waiting for her reply just as tense as a

student holding up his nerve for his results. Each

and every bit of my brain and heart were

preoccupied with questions that were clouded

around me.

I couldn't hold on to the nerve anymore and

thought of leaving my phone aside and rest myself

till I got a notification. So, I just pushed my legs onto the table before my chair and made myself

comfortable by taking a hefty breath and closing my

eyes which were relentlessly waiting for a message.

As the eyelids were moving closer to each

other, my brain shifted my whole being into the time

that I had seen her for the first time. Although it’s

been 3 years it still had the same fragrance of

memories just as yesterday. As all the emotions that

were tangled with her started dragging me in, I

slipped myself into the ocean of reminders and

glimpses of her beauty.

First Meet

m

It was 1st august 2013. I entered the main gate of

NIT Raipur with a great passion and a million

dreams in my eyes. The main block was humongous

which took me nearly a minute to stare from one

end to the other. I then got to know it was one of the

oldest colleges in India that was built in 1956 and it

was an all in one block. So, the students from first

year to final year stay at one place which filled me

up with diversified thoughts.

After the joining we were allotted the hostels

based on our places and ranks and I found my name

listed in hostel-d. It really shattered all my dreams

about the hostel life and made me realize that it was

not something that movies would illuminate in their

films. The outer appearance was ghostly and the

interior was quite moderate and had a decent finish

with a set of terrifying bathrooms. As I was a

person from south India, the food in Raipur tasted

so vague. It had neither salt nor chilly powder in it

which equated to diet of a goat. The only relief was

that it had non veg twice a week. On that day I used

to recover all the weight that I lost in that week.

With all these dreadful situations running

along that one thing which made me happier was

that I could make a set of good friends. My

roommates were Suman and Rakesh. Suman was a

moderate person with a hefty smile which could

drag a person’s attention and Rakesh was short and

had a freaky attitude with the highest enthusiasm

levels. Along with them the others who were in my

batch were Arun and Ajay who stayed next to my

room. Arun was a trustworthy person who could

never break any promise whereas Ajay was an

extrovert who talks so frankly that sometimes it

might hurt.

Some classes were taught in Hindi which made

me a little furious, as I was very little familiar to

Hindi. So I used to sit with Suman and we used to

talk for the entire session that the lecture was

taught. The only relief that I could get from staying

at a place like this was the time we played UNO

which used to start around 11 after our dinner with

my batch. One day as everyday we were playing

UNO but, Rakesh has won three games in a row.

Now, the game was going quite intense. I sat beside

Suman and could see something strange was

happening with the cards that Rakesh was playing.

So, I paid a little attention to the pillow that he was

sitting on and I could find some cards buried in

them. I climbed on him and dragged those cards out

upon seeing which everyone jumped along and beat

him for his betrayal.

It was 19th August 2013 just a normal day that

again started by my mom’s call in the morning I

was too dizzy to wake up from the bed so, I attended

the call in half-sleep I heard my mom shouting that

it was already 8 in the morning and I was late for

college which would start in 45 minutes. So, I

replied okay to her and raised up from my bed and

quickly went through a shower and got myself ready

in time.

As it was 2nd week in the college I couldn't

have many friends and this city's food made me

nauseous and everything here resembled hell. As it

was my first time to stay at a hostel I must have felt

like that. Because everyone other than me were just

fine with all this stuff.

As I was making my way to the college through

the ground I heard a person shouting ''stop there''

and waving his hand towards him. I had understood

that he was calling me and as I got there I was

encircled by 5 persons who don't have any

resemblance and all I could figure it out from

gazing at them was that they were my seniors.

"What's your name?" the person in the blue

shirt is asked.

"Ved Chandra" I replied.

He got really mad at me. It might be because of

my attitude in replying to a senior. But I really

didn't encounter anyone of them in those two weeks

so, I literally had no idea on why he was raising at

me in such a loud and punishable tone.

"Don't you know how to address a senior?"

The person standing beside me asked.

"Sorry sir I do" I replied

The conservation took around 10-15 minutes

and I gave them a full introduction of myself and

got to know all their names. As a lecturer was

passing by, he ordered them to go to their classes.

Finally, I felt relieved as they left me alone and

thus made a run to my class as I was already late by

15 minutes. After the forenoon session, we all had

lunch where we got a chance to eat curry which has

no salt in it and Dal which equated to coloured

water. By finishing our meal myself and "Sathvik"

the only person I knew from the first day of my

college made our way to the physics lab. There was

a printed sheet that was kept on the notice board

stating the respective batches to be formed by the

students. As he was in a different group he rushed

for the chemistry department and I entered the lab

and as we had already completed a lab in the first

week, sir ordered us to form the same groups as of

that day and retain at our places with the

apparatus.

It was AND-OR gate implementation for our

group and I couldn't figure it out why others in my

group were totally involved in that experiment in

which I had zero percent interest. So, I was just

standing there and noting down the readings of it.

Suddenly in an instance, a girl made her way

into the lab and was talking to our lab assistant.

Her tone was very peculiar that pulled me to have a

glance at her. She was wearing a green churidar

and a perfect resemblance to a South Indian girl.

She had a fair skin complexion and was short in

height. Her earrings were dazzling as the rays of

sunlight striking her earrings. The first thing that

made me stare at her for some more time is her

smile which had a power of dragging anyone to her

side.

As the professor made his way along with her

to our side I quickly shifted my eyes towards my

experiment table pretending to be a sincere student

so that I could make a positive impression. The

professor came near us and said to her "you can

join this team" and momentarily looked at us and

said, "She is your new teammate" and left.

She just smirked by looking at us as she was the

only girl in our team which might make her little

uncomfortable or so.

"My name is Diya" she introduced herself and

joined the team in no time, she got herself ready

and involved in the experiment. As I had a little

experience in associating with girls I couldn't

introduce myself. As the experiment came to an end

we were returning to our seats and as I turned back

she was standing right in front of me with a wide

smile on her face.

"You Telugu..? " she asked with an innocent

tone and in a dilemmatic state.

"Yes ...yes I am from Andhra Pradesh" I replied

with a low tone as it was my first encounter with

her.

"Thank God, I had met one... I am Diya" she

replied by stretching her hand towards me.

"I am Ved Chandra nice to meet you" I replied

by giving her a formalistic handshake in a high

dignified manner.

She took a seat beside me and was asking a

number of questions resembling herself to a

journalist who was taking my interview. I barely got

a chance to ask her anything about her as I was

busy in just answering to her missiles. At last, as

she stopped asking questions and was busy in

writing her notes which she missed in the last lab I

was gaining my confidence to ask her FB id or her

phone number.

By the time I called her name lab in charge

yelled: "It's time you can go to your classes ".

Everyone made their way outside and I stood

numbly regretting my abilities. She shattered the

silence between us by turning back and asked me to

give her my FB id so that I could be in touch.

"It's Ved Chandra" I replied with a wide smile.

"Ok I will ping you...bye" she replied.

I was still awestruck in her trans of

mesmerizing words. By the time I revived she had

already left the corridor. So, I just gave a smile to

my luck and walked to my hostel room.

In the next two days, the only thing that I could

do was deliberately thinking about sending her a

friend request or wait till I get one from her. But

after a tranquillizing period, I just made sure about

my confidence levels by cheering that she wouldn't

find it as an offensive thing and took a positive step

by sending her a friend request hoping for an

acceptance soon.

But to my surprise, I got a notification in an

hour stating that my request had been accepted.

And there was a good evening message in the inbox

from her which really lit my face up.

"Good evening. It was great to have a message

from you" I replied to her first message.

"It was my pleasure that I found at least you as

I was frightened about all these surroundings" she

replied.

"Me too so how’s everything going on?" I

asked in curiosity.

But putting an end to my conversation she

replied "Bye catch you later" which revealed that

she was a mood based initiator who will lighten the

things on their convenience and shut them down

when they were low. But this initiation from her of

messaging first which was very rare quality to find

basically in a girl loaded my brain with positive

input.

She was just like an encrypted device that was

not accessible to everyone and a tedious task to

understand completely. But the thing is that I really

wanted her to be my best friend so that I could

reveal every detail of her character which she was

hiding behind her sparkling eyes.

So the messages exchanged from boys hostel to

girls hostel through a quite non-moist atmosphere

alleviating not only her message but also the feeling

that was adhered to it. The beauty was every

message from her had a different fragrance of parts

of speech which were relative to her mood swings.

It was the first time I showed that much interest in a

girls mood and attitude which were unique in her.

We became good friends in no time and shared

every incident of our past. 2 hours of chat a day

became an eventual habit for us. I could come to a

conclusion that a girl transforms herself after

believing that the other person is trustworthy.

Although it was just a diplomatic talk for most

of the time yet her messages were just acting upon

me like a tranquilizer which soothes my mood and

the only reason behind it was that she never worries

about her past and never let any mistake in the past

affect her present mood. I don't have any idea how

she was doing that and how could she rinse her

mind so swiftly.

We used to spend hours in chat but never could

get a chance to hang out with each other. Every day

two things were the same one is her smile that

automatically turns on by looking at me and the

other was my face which glows on watching her

smile. I couldn't spend most of the time with her in

the first year as for most of the holidays we went

back to our homes for being home sick. But this

didn't affect our friendship in any way but instead,

the distance made us realize how much we miss

each other's silly conversations, this made our bond

thicker and closer as friends. Never I had thought

what she was thinking about me and does she miss

me at all or not? It was just because I believe in an

old saying,

“What you sow is what you reap”

All those days in which I was distant from her

made my heart reluctant which indeed extruded all

the feelings about her in my imagination but never I

intended to show her any one of them because of the

fact that all the feelings I had about her were just a

mere respectful bliss of interest in her character.

When we returned to our college all the messages

that were paused just resumed back. It was Sunday

and the time was around 7 pm and I
