We have missed the SAAB for a little while; last time, we had a 9-3 Diesel, it was perhaps the best they had ever produced, a simple, safe and stylish car from Sweden. The all new 9-5 is a bigger car, over 172mm much longer than the previous model. That leaves you to think about it all over again.

The design of the car is very grand regal, if you have never come across a SAAB before, you would think that it is a big American car but dressed in a prominent European design. Without doubt, it retains its signature wrap around narrow visor type huge windscreen that has inherited from its aerospace engineering background. A new enlarged shield type of grille as its front focal point. The overall shape is strong, masculine, aerodynamic but still smooth and uses all rounded design theme. Personally, its presence will help you to think about it as a more luxurious priced European car with a unique Swedish favour.

The interior is as attractive as the exterior. It is spacious, well designed and finished. The materials used are nice. An attractive feature is the large head-up display, which provides speedo reading and quite detailed navigation direction.

Another interior focal point is the ultra large touch screen navigation screen. It works extremely well with its advance road map. In addition, its sound system is rather upmarket also complimented by famous Harmon Kardon system. The grid-patterned design clues still play an important part in the new model. Obviously, it has followed through with the aircraft cockpit ergonomic for the driver. Having said that, it misses out the cleverly designed flip-out cup-holders. That’s something that a real SAAB supporter is looking for. But don’t worry, it has its modern and traditional cup holder for you in the central console. All instruments are easy to read and friendly to use.

Driving It is a nice ride with the SAAB 9-5. The body is big and spacious, so if anyone wants space and wants to stretch out, it will be an excellent idea. The car comes with three different suspension settings. I prefer the “comfort” as this car brings that lovely floating feeling. The turbo engine responses nicely when demanded, in general, it is smooth and quiet. Gear changes from its 6 speed automatic are as silky as it can be. The steering wheel gives sufficient feel and weight, and precision.

When travelling on highway and smooth concrete or tarmac, the ride quality is very respectable. The weight of the car corresponds with the acceleration, with its 2.0-litre 4 cylinder petrol twin-scroll turbocharger, pumping out 162kW of power and /350Nm of torque. It has a healthy response to everything, but people may prefer a bigger engine that the petrol V6 with its all wheel drive system will give another level of excitement to its owner. However, the Swedes have their own line of thought, so less is more and perhaps more environmental friendly as well.What do I think?

If you want something different, in a luxurious large car segment, the SAAB is a very competent choice and my favour contestant. It has its unique style that seems doesn’t go out of style very quickly. As for the price, it is around $75,000 for the VECTOR 2.0T, plus on road cost.
