“T

Bassist/vocalist Tom Severn is eat-ing a bowl of rice crispies and tells me, “Recording is difficult enough, so when we fell out with the record label we had to drop out of making an elbum half-way.”

It suddenly hits me how where I am, in a room with the most im-portant band of the last decade back together after what seems like a lifetime. But even thnking about their break-up five years ago makes me well up inside, nobody saw that com-ing. But then again nobody saw this coming. They’ve secretely been jam-ming together on Severn’s farmland, experimenting with new sounds and milking the talent out of eachother.

“It was Cam’s idea, just to get togeth-er because we hadn’t seen eachother in ages.” Telling me this is Seung, the band’s guitar prodigy. These last few years he’s just disapeared from the music scene, making no noise until now. “We got to his, ended up drunk and steal-ing a tractor. (Tom and Cam at this point are on the verge of a laughing

fit) I, erm, kind of run over a couple of cows.”

“We don’t really know what hap-pened after that, but we woke up back at Tom’s with a killer hangover and covered in potatoes,” Cam tells me. “After that cleared, Tom wanted us too see his home-made music room and recording studio. It was pretty impres-sive so we got a bit carried away showing eachother little bits of music that we’d come up with by ourselves during the break-up. Before we knew it we’d made two songs in one day and the wheels were rolling again.” Tom, who was now eating a massive pile of toast (I am told that he has a reputation to never stop eating) tells me: “We had to make a very serious desicion whether we should pick up the band again.

“Basically we just jammed for the rest of that day and decided that it WAS a good idea. The next problem was decided how to do it, our last manager and record company screwed us

and we wanted an album which was truly ours. Other record labels re-

stricted us a bit saying some of our stuff was just a bit too wierd, this new album is just beyond anything we’ve done before, I honestly don’t think I can achieve anything more than this.”

When I ask them them about touring they are a bit less confident on the issue, Cam tells me: “We wanted some-thing truly mind-blowing, something

which people havn’t seen before. The whole live scene has gone so boring nowadays, we thought it was our duty to put the spark back in. Problem is things like helicopters on stage don’t sit too well with venue owners, and we don’t like stadium shows because we don’t think sitting down belong at gigs. We’ll sort it out though, look forward to seeing us at a festival or two, we really want to try some foreign festivals because they’re so different to things like glastonbury and reading.”

Rest assured though, The Flips headlining an English festival too, as Seung explains: “The best way to end a tour is with a festival. You can just enjoy yourself completely, especially in your home country.”

“I, erm, kind of run over a couple of

cows”

IMES WERE HARD and our manager wasn’t helping,” explains Cam Robinson. Next to him
