SAMANVAYA – Empowerment and Rehabilitation of the disabled

Samanvaya is a wing of Sangli Mission Society for the training and rehabilitation of the

persons with disabilities

Sangli Mission Society has been involved in education and rehabilitation of children with disabilities since

1996. To provide all inclusion life to the children with disability, SMS are implementing Institutional Based

Rehabilitation Program (IBR) and Community Based Rehabilitation Program (CBR) throughout operational

area. For education, training and rehabilitation of persons with disabilities, Sangli Mission Society have

following five centers.

Jeevdan Residential School & Vocational Training Center for the Intellectually Disabled,

Zarap, Kudal, Sindhudurg.

Anugraha Special School, Veral, Khed, Ratnagiri.

Pratiksha Residential School for the Intellectually Disabled, Vilavade, Lanja, Ratnagiri.

Ashadeep Special School, Balaji Nagar, Sangli.

CHERISH Vocational Training & Rehabilitation Center for the Intellectually Disabled

(Adult male persons), Nirmalgiri, Amberi, Kudal, Sindhudurg.

Curriculum

Designed in a way that all the activities in the campus are part of the learning process, curriculum aims at

independence in self help skills, academic skill development, economic rehabilitation and mainstreaming.

Class teachers plan out Individual Education Program (I.E.P.) for every child in which child’s current level is

assessed and short term and long term goals are determined. Marathi alphabets, numbers, colors, good

habits, basic concepts, good manners, reading and writing and general knowledge are taught. Special

services like physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy etc are given to the needy on prescribed

days and time.

Activities of Daily Living (ADL)

Activities of Daily Living or self help skills are taught with priority, a set of basic actions to make CWDs

independent living at home and community, i.e., personal care, mobility and eating. Routinely ADLs training

helped children to carryout daily activities like expression of feeling by gesture,

Physiotherapy

A residential physiotherapist attends to the daily exercises of each child to improve muscle power, balance,

ROM co-ordination, muscle testing and walking aids, improve the gait pattern (make the children mobile

and independent) and give amazing results in mobility and balance. This is being provided to every child

every day.

Speech Therapy

Speech therapy is a clinical program aimed at improving speech and language skills and oral motor abilities.

Children who are able to talk may work on making their speech clearer, or on building their language skills by

learning new words, learning to speak in sentences, or improving their listening skills. Children who cannot

talk may learn sign language, or how to use special equipment such as a computer that speaks for them.

Children who talk but have challenges with more discreet communication issues such as facial expression or

gestural language use, may work on these areas of communication

Sports and Games

A state level special Olympic was organized in Kolhapur on 8th Oct 2017, Jeevdan Special School actively

partakes in Olympics, two students from Jeevdan Special School won the first prize. A students from Jeevdan

special school also participated in zonal level Special Olympic meets at Kolhapur on 26th Sep 2016

On behalf of world disability day on 3rd Dec 2016 sports and games competition were executed in Pratiksha

Special School, Anugraha Special School, Jeevdan Special School. Day celebrated with various competitions

like running, dancing, singing etc.

Parents meeting

Parents are a key part to creating, revising and encouraging their child with special needs accordingly

executed parents meeting at Jeevdan special school on 25th and 26th Nov 2016. Various things have been

thought to parents on this particular training.

Pratiksha Special School has organized quarterly parents meet in school, as it is important to approach each

parent teacher conference to refine child individual progress and for making sure role and responsibility of

teacher, students and parents clear.

Annual day

Annual day was celebrated on 20th January 2017 at Jeevdan. Mr. Vikrant Savant was the chief guest for the

program, Mr. Vinayak Raut, MP, Sindhudurg – Ratnagiri constituency unofficially visited the program.

World disability day celebration

World disability day celebrated by Jeevdan Special School, Anugraha Special School, and Pratiksha Special

School on this day schools create awareness in the society on the importance of taking care of disabled

persons. Apart from awareness small competition and various activities has conducted for making a day

special.

Vocational training

Jeevdan Special School, Sindhudurg Vocational training provided to 27 students who completed 18 year

since 2016 – 17, all of them stay in the campus. Vocational activities like coir making, foot – mat making,

incense – stick making, etc are taught to elder children. At preliminary level they getting training to make

greeting cards, materials related to festivals, paper bags, incense sticks, foot mats, home making cooking etc.

the sole aim of providing vocational training is to economically rehabilitate them in their own communities

and families as productive citizens that they live financially independent life. Two vocational instructors are in

charge of the VTC.

Anugraha Special School, Khed, Ratnagiri provided various types of vocational training to special children in

the year 2016 – 17. There is frequent monitoring from the trained staff and produced goods namely envelop

making, paper bag making, hand crafting, etc sold in shops according to the need. By the profit the children

are financially strong and independent.

SAKSHAM – Women empowerment the formation and strengthening of Self Help Group

(SHGs)

Saksham is a women empowerment program implemented by Sangli Mission Society in Sangli, Kolhapur,

Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri. Saksham focuses on empowering rural women by providing various trainings,

making them self sufficient by establishing Self Help Groups (SHG).

SHGs Formation

Self Help Group (SHGs) is a holistic means and united route for women to improve their psychological,

economical and social status. In the 2016 – 17 total of 5805 new women joined with 387 SHGs

Bachat Gat Bank Melava

Ministry of Labour and Employment organizes workshops for working women and educates them about their

rights/duties, Legal aid. Usually this workshops runs for two days and Govt. reimburse per day 100 rupees to

participant women as they spends whole day. In the last year Sangli Mission Society implemented 10

trainings on Mahila Bachat Gat Bank in Kolhapur and Sindhudurg districts with the collaboration of district

labour and employment center.

Maintaining of records are essential element of Self Help Groups (SHGs) according to this we organized 80

register training with the participation of president and secretary of each SHGs. 80 secretary and 80

presidents are authorized in record keeping.

Mahila Melava

Mahila melava is a building block of Self Help Groups (SHGs), mahila melava is common place for women to

Below Poverty Line (BPL) family surveys conducted in Kolhapur, Sangli, Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri districts. BPL

survey aim was to link BPL people with various Govt. schemes namely Sanjay Gandhi Yojana (SGY), Aam

Aadmi Yojana (AAY), Shravanbal Vrudhapkal Yojana (SVY), Indira Avas Yojana (IAY), etc.

Digital Saheli Event

Digital Saheli is an elementary computer education course for women offered by Maharashtra Knowledge

Corporation Limited. With the collaboration of Siddhi Computer, Ratnagiri we conducted said event on 8th

March 2017 in Khed, Ratnagiri. Total 08 women from Self Help Group, Khed learned computer education and

got certificated from MKCL.

Below poverty line (BPL) family meetings

BPL meeting is a way of advocacy by which people present exact situation before the Govt. officials. It makes

easier for people for sanctioning the schemes as Govt. official heard people’s situation in the meetings. Total

10 BPL meetings conducted with the participation of 500 surveyed people.

Counseling

Counseling plays paramount role in behavioral intervention especially in variety of issues such as medical,

psychological and social. Dilasa accommodated counseling’s in certain issues like pre & post HIV test, CD4,

ART, Pediatric ART, Nutrition, Education, Peer counseling, etc.

Dilasa Counseling support center provided Follow up service to 296 people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the year

2016 – 2017. 142 clients were made follow up for checking their CD4 and for 154 Clients those who had

missed ART treatment for more than 3 months

Every quarter we arrange supplementary food distribution program for CLHIV. Last year 240 children

benefited with supplementary food. Supplementary food kit contains Groundnuts, Dates, Soya bean, Pulses,

Jaggery, Wheat, and Rice, etc.

Educational material distribution programs

Dilasa counseling and support center arranges educational material distribution program in June of every

year. Educational material kit contain with notebooks, textbooks, sack, umbrella, etc. Total 10 poor CLHIV

benefited with educational materials.

Sweater distribution programs

Conducted sweater distribution program in Dilasa counseling and support center, Kolhapur. Inner wheel club,

Kolhapur and Sangli Mission Society had taken collaboratively efforts for distributing sweaters. Motto of

distributing sweater was to protect children from wintry weather. Total 30 needy and poor Children Living

with HIV/AIDS (CLHIV) benefited with sweaters.

Government implements pension schemes are extremely relevant and useful to PLHIV as they are not

potential to fulfill basic needs due to impending health condition and opportunistic disease. Last year Dilasa

facilitated 180 PLHIVs to put forward the documents

Referrals

Referral services given to 126 PLHIVs to different stakeholders to fulfill various need of PLHIV namely HIV

testing, ART treatment, CD4 count, etc. 60 people living with HIV (PLHIV) referred for CD4, 19 people referred

for HIV testing and 47 people referred to ART center.

2. Vihaan care and support center (CSC) Sangli Mission society is implementing four Vihaan CSC in Sangli and Kolhapur district. The project aims to

empower people living with HIV (PLHIV) by providing care and support services like counseling, HIV testing of

family members, providing government schemes etc

Vihaan care and support center, Ichalkaranji organized “Mass Yoga Demonstration” event on behalf of

National yoga day on 28th Jun 2016. Total 40 PLHIVs participated in Yoga demonstration. Mr. Dattatray Patil

from Shivaji University, Kolhapur imparted Yoga demonstration.

Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojana sanction letter distribution program

Vihaan Care and Support center, Ichalkaranji organized Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojana sanction letter

distribution program at Sneha Sadan, Alte on 18th Sep 2017. Total 44 PLHIVs were benefited for Sanjay

Gandhi Niradhar Yojana scheme. This was possible because of the efforts of CSC advocacy

Diwali material distribution program

Vihaan care and support center, Ichalkaranji organized Diwali material distribution program in Sneha Sadan,

Alte on 23rd Oct 2016. Mr. Sunil Lahoti from Rotary club of Ichalkaranji donated Diwali materials namely

dress, sweets, health kit, etc. Total 50 CLHIVs benefited with the Diwali materials.

Vihaan care and support center, Ichalkaranji organized supplementary food distribution program in Dec 2016

for poor CLHIV. Supplementary food helps CLHIV to increase CD4 count as well as fight against opportunistic

disease. Total 35 CLHIVs benefited with supplementary food. Supplementary food kit contains Groundnuts,

Dates, Soya bean, Pulses, Jaggery, Wheat, and Rice, etc.

World T.B day celebration

World T.B day celebrated on 24th March 2017 in T.B department, IGM hospital, Ichalkaranji. This program was

specially organized for T.B. Department staff for their support and good coordination. Dr. V.S. Yadav (SMO

IGM), Dr. Jintendra Hupare (HOD of TB Dept.) along with their staff participated in the program.

year. Total 184 CLHIVs benefited with supplementary food. Supplementary food kit contains Groundnuts,

Dates, Soya bean, Pulses, Jaggery, Wheat, and Rice, etc.

Diwali material distribution program

Vihaan care and support center, Gadhinglaj organized Diwali material distribution program in sub district

hospital, Gadhinglaj on 27th Sept 2016 local people donated Diwali materials namely dress, sweets, health kit,

oil, soap, cosmetic, etc. Total 35 CLHIVs benefited with the Diwali materials.

HIV testing camp

Vihaan care and support center, Gadhinglaj conducted two HIV testing camps one in Harli Village on 6th Dec

2016 This activity conducted with the collaboration of ART center, Gadhinglaj. Total 142 people voluntarily

did their HIV testing on the day.

Social scheme sanction letter distribution program

Vihaan Care and Support center, Gadhinglaj organized Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojana sanction letter

distribution program at ART center, Gadhinglaj on 29th March 2017. Total 38 PLHIVs were benefited for

Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojana scheme. This was possible because of the efforts of CSC advocacy

World T.B day celebration

World T.B day celebrated on 23rd March 2017 in T.B department, sub district hospital, Gadhinglaj. This

program was specially organized for T.B. Department staff for their support and good coordination. Vihaan

care and support center, Gadhinglaj given memento and certificate to T.B department staff.

World women day celebration

World women celebrated on 09th March 2017 in Vihaan CSC, Gadhinglaj. Program held with HIV testing and

Saree distribution etc. 50 women voluntary did their HIV testing out of those 09 detected as positive and 41

widow benefited with sarees. Dr.Patil (SMO) and club members were chief gust for the program.

Open house

Childline organizes open house activity once in a month to sensitize children. Open house activity

helps to understand issues of children. Last year 12 open house activities conducted with the

participation of 236 children.

Childline is a 24 hour toll free phone service for the children in need of care and protection from the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD), Government of India. In 2011 Sangli Mission Society started to work as a collaborative organization for Kolhapur city.

Mass awareness

Mass awareness conducted on different occasions where thousands of people come together;

Childline always make use of such occasion to sensitize people on child issues and aware them

about 1098. Childline have conducted 36 mass awareness programs with the participation of

thousands of people and children

School awareness

Childline sensitize teacher along with students throughout school awareness program. This instills

children about child rights. Last year 31 school awareness programs conducted with participation of

5806 students along with their teachers.

Childline Advisory Board (CAB) meeting

Childline Advisory Board (CAB) meeting held on 9th Dec 2016, CAB is formed under the chairmanship

of district collector to seek cooperation and guidance from all Govt. Departments which are

connected with the children.

Childline se Dosti Program (CSD)

Childline Se Dosti is a weak campaign aims to make ordinary citizens stakeholders in Childline. The

main purpose of this campaign is to generate thousands of dosts for Childline and acquaint people

with child rights and protection.

Childline organized various activities like children party, come and play games, signature campaign

against the child marriage, school sensitization, dosti corner, man ki bat, svacha vasti abhiyan, etc.

also visited to allied system namely Dist. Collector, DSP, DCPU, CWC, JJB, Civil Hospital.

Road Show

Road show organized on behalf of World day against child labor with awareness rally. This day

celebrated with activities like ‘Chalata – Bolata Prashan manjusha’ also made awareness with

decorative Auto rickshaw by using informative flex of child labor. Childline reached 5000 to 5500

peoples and 3000 children.

b. SMS Aflatoun – Social and financial education program for school children

Objectives

Aflatoun is a social and financial education program for school going children in Panhala and

Shahuwadi tehsil of Kolhapur district. Program aims to inculcate social responsibility and

financial management in the students.

Cluster camp

Executed 01 cluster camp with intermingle participation of Nadgaon and Nadari schools in

Shahuwadi tehsil. Activities like environmental protection, child rights and responsibility, batate –

vada – idli – dosa, etc had taken by 110 students from 05 schools.

Children market

Executed 04 children market in different schools. Students participated in the market as vendor to

make profit. Student brought material to sell that is vegetables, stationary, glossary, handcrafts and

food products. This activity builds capacity of entrepreneurship as well as put children together with

the financial management.

c. HITGUJ – Adolescent counseling program in Secondary Schools.

Objectives

Hitguj is a school counseling program running in 25 Zilla Parishad school in Kolhapur district

under the permission of district education department, Kolhapur. Hitguj desires to reach up 10

thousand school children.

responsible use of multimedia

Smart Phone distribution program

Smartphone distribution program conducted on 17th and 22nd Sep 2016 in Shivpuri, Kuktoli, Hingangaon,

“Play.connect.learn” is a reading capacity building program, running in Sangli and Kolhapur district with

the 3750 school children. Project started with the collaboration of Sesame Workshop Indian, which aims

to improve grade-level reading, a basic skill needed for lifelong learning.

Sangli Mission Society is a recognized agent of Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) India since 2009. Project

makes awareness on insurance; provide trainings to special persons, and security to below poverty line

(BPL) families. Sangli Mission Society is a prime organization in Kolhapur division since 2010 so that in

the last year LIC honored Sangli Mission Society with SHATAKVEER medal. As on day we have 5650

Samardhan is an advocacy program running in four districts of Maharashtra. Sangli Mission Society aim

is to link up people from all over the operational areas who are deprived from rights; for this we

mobilizes people with surveys, awareness, and advocacy meetings, etc. program linked thousands of

men, women and children with schemes. In the 2016 – 17 total 2126 people benefited with Govt.

schemes like Sanjay Gandhi Yojana (SGY), Shravanbal Vrudhapkal Yojana (SVY), Aam Aadmi Yojana

(AAY), National Family Benefit Scheme (NFBS), Ration Card (RC), Indira Avas Yojana (IAY), etc.

Inauguration of tailoring batches

Sangli Mission Society inaugurated two tailoring batches in Ghalwad and Herwad villages in the year of 2016 -2017. Total 29 women’s successfully completed tailoring course in two batches and got Certificate from Vocational Education Training Board (Govt. of Maharashtra Recognized & ISO Certified Autonomous Board).

Swavalamban is a skill development program implemented in operational area of Sangli Mission

Society; program imparts skill development training to begin various income generation programs like

farming, goat rearing, dairy farming, poultry, small business etc. It also supports SHGs to start

collective income generation programs. Since 2014, SMS registered in Vocational Education Training

Board (VSPM) an ISO certified board to impart skill development trainings. We have successfully

completed 07 batches of tailoring and computer basic with 92 admissions in Kolhapur and Sangli

district.

NIVARA is a wing of Sangli Mission Society; established to provide shelter to the homeless poor,

ADULT EDUCATION – Non formal education to adults

Sangli Mission Society inaugurate new concept of adult education on behalf of world literacy day. Program

gives a chance to adults to start afresh in basic education; the main aim is to improve the capabilities of

adults in writings, readings, signings, etc.

Sangli Missions Society’s Department of Education is striving hard to emulate and inculcate a value based quality education to its students. Here is a brief report of its educational institutions and its manifold activities for the year 2016 2017. There are 10 English medium schools and three nurseries owned and run by SMS through which over 10,000 children prepare themselves for a joyful generation next. Our schools initiate children into regular educational system giving personal attention to every student that he or she can excel in all dimensions. Due emphasis is given for socialization, character formation, discipline and teaching first lessons of academics. Day to day learning experience is arranged in such a way that children develop interest in coming to the school. Children are initiated into reading and writing and oral and written exams are conducted. To evaluate the development of children parents-teachers meeting is held every month. Ashadeep Nursery This year 130 children are studying in the nursery in two divisions. It has five teaching staff and 4non-teaching staff.

To keep children sportive and culturally illumined, cultural competitions were conducted for students on 20th & 21st November and sports competitions on 4th& 5th December. Nursery at Khed The academic year started in Khed on 15 the June with 40 kids. There are 3 on the staff, and they are given good training language study. Nursery at Kodoli Though nursery was started at Kodoli with the arrival of DSS sisters but there is only very poor response. Only 9 students were admitted in the nursery. In-service Training of Staff Sangli Mission gives lots of importance to the in service training as well as refresher courses for the teachers. Well-known resource persons are brought from established institutes. A training program was organized at Alphonsa school Miraj and in St Thomas School, Ratnagiri in June in which teachers from all our schools participated. Mrs Anne, an Educational professional from Pune was the resource person and 326 teachers attended the program. Training of Parents The role of parents in the process of education is of paramount importance. The trust has established its own guidance and counselling centre at Ashadeep Sangli. The centre organizes training for parents on the topic “Responsible and Smart Parenting for a Smart Education.” All the schools of Sangli Mission conduct this workshop as per the need and specialties of the school and its locality. Counselling and Guidance All the schools of SMS organized various counselling and career guidance sessions for students. Ashadeep Guidance and Counselling Centre conducted aptitude and IQ tests in all the high schools and helped the students to be focused on their way ahead. Sports and Extra Curricular Activities Educational Policy of SMS is very particular about the integral growth of its students. Sports and extracurricular activities are given a lot of importance. The inter school sports and cultural competitions take place at regular intervals. Inter school competitions; athletics, cultural and literary competitions help the students of various schools of SMS to come together and interact each other for a better tomorrow. Students from every school take part in Taluka and district and national level athletics, sports and games and win laurels to the schools. Scholarships and Competitive Exams All the schools of SMS encourage their students to participants in maximum number of national and international competitive examinations; to name a few, Dr. Homibhaba Exam, Brain Development, Mother India Talent Search, Maharashtra Talent Search, G. K. Olympiad, National Science Olympiad (NSO International Mathematics Olympiad(IMO), International English Olympiad(IEO) Scholarship Exams, Spell Bee, English Marathon etc. etc. Care for students with learning disabilities All the schools of SMS are very particular about giving additional care to the students with learning disabilities like dyslexia, dysgraphia, retention disabilities, speech disabilities etc. Remedial classes are arranged for the students with learning disabilities and are brought to the main stream.

Co-curricular activities All the schools of SMS give lots of importance to co-curricular activities. To name a few, Science and Art Exhibitions, Cultural Fest, Science, Maths and General Quiz competitions, Annual Gatherings, Sports and Cultural Competitions, Picnics etc. The students present their ideas on exhibits covering a spectrum of topics. We witness large turn up of parents and local people. Also the schools bring out school magazines every year with all its scholarly charm and beauty. Innovative teaching Aids Most of the schools are well equipped with latest teaching – learning materials like Interactive Smart Boards, labs, libraries, Audio Visual rooms etc. Socialization and Care for the Poor Socialization and care for the poor is one of the important characteristics of the educational system of SMS. All the schools undertake various humanitarian activities and social action throughout the academic year so that the generation next continues their social responsibility to the society. For instance, Alphonsa School Miraj and Ichalkaranji take their students every year to Dilasa Bhavan where the HIV infected children are given the best care. Alphonsa Shikshan Sahaya Nidhi Education to all is one of the basic principles of the Educational policy of SMS. Every school has scholarship/concession systems to promote those students who are economically backward. Every school tries to identify rural children who are talented but from rural and economically backward areas. Towards this cause SMS has started generating a special fund called Alphonsa Shikshan Sahaya Nidhi which has already become unique relief to a number of poor children. Reaching out to Alumni It is quite heart-warming that the ex-students of all the schools of SMS have great respect and level of gratitude to their schools. Even after passing out, these institutions function as energy sources for them. These intuitions take care of them through various forums like Website based groups, Alumni gatherings etc. Art and Science Exhibitions The budding scientists and artists of Alphonsa SchoolShahuwadi and Santhome School Sangliand St Thomas Ratnagiriarranged an Art and Science exhibition. The children could present their ideas on exhibits covering a spectrum of topics. There was a large turn up of parents and local people.
