ver the spring 2011 semester, SAMFAC's neweducation initiative, Mi Punto de Vista (or “mypoint of view”), engaged interested artstudents from the Chaffey Joint Union High

School District in an intensive look at Sam Maloof’scollecting history, particularly in the area of Mexican folkart. Generously underwritten by grants from the James P.Irvine Foundation's Creative Connections Fund, The RoseHills Foundation, and The Community Impact Fund at TheCommunity Foundation Serving Riverside and SanBernardino Counties Mi Punto de Vista has resulted in adramatic jump in youth attendance through both on-siteand in-class programming.

Under the direction of museum educator Rich Deelygroups from six area high schools took part in a multi-visitprogram that included pre-trip, on-site, and post visitexperiences. As part of their site visits students discussed

what messages they learned and suggested themes andtechniques that SAMFAC could utilize to appeal to youngeraudiences.

"While much has been said about Sam Maloof themaster woodworker," notes Deely, "there has not been ahouse and grounds tour that directly focuses exclusivelyon his love of collecting, and how his tastes evolved overthe years. Our hope is to provide another lens throughwhich to see Sam's life and work."

Teachers have reported being thrilled to have such aquality museum experience so close to their schools.Students have marveled at the beauty of the museum intheir backyard. "This is the best trip we've ever been on,and we've been on trips all over LA" exclaimed EtiwandaHigh School art and photography teacher Tara Cutts. "Inaddition to the thoughtful planning and organization, mykids were truly engaged and inspired."

Mason, Price, and Voulkos changed theconversation in ceramics from craft to art, creating fired-clay sculpture thatwas unprecedented in ambition and originality. These three artists werethe catalysts for a new ceramic scene and a definitive shift in the wayceramics were understood. From that point until the present day, clay hasnever been viewed in the same way again. The exhibition presentsimportant works in this development. (rcwg.scrippscollege.edu)

he first project of its kind, Pacific Standard Time is a collaborationof more than 60 museums and cultural institutions acrossSouthern California that tells the story of the birth of Los Angelesart in the post World War II period. One of the towering figures of

the era was Sam Maloof, a woodworker who embodied the creative energyand innovation of Pacific Standard Time and garnered broad acclaim. Hiscontributions are being heralded in several exhibitions.

The House That Sam Built: Sam Maloof and Art in the Pomona Valley, 1945-1985The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical GardensSeptember 24, 2011-January 30, 2012

Born and raised in Southern California, Sam Maloof (1916-2009) became anationally recognized leader of the American studio furniture movement–amovement that favored the aesthetics of craft and the handmade over themachine and mass-production. His iconic chairs, tables, and other creationsare renowned for their elegant sculptural form and virtuosic craftsmanship.

Sam was also an integral member of the art, craft, and design communitythat emerged in the Pomona Valley, at the eastern edge of Los Angeles County,in the years following World War II. Maloof ’s circle included painter MillardSheets, sculptor Albert Stewart, ceramists Harrison McIntosh, enamelists Jeanand Arthur Ames, woodturner Bob Stocksdale, and fiber artist KaySekimachi.

The Huntington’s exhibition The House that Sam Built showcases importantMaloof pieces spanning more than three decades of his career accompaniedby approximately 80 works by his friends and colleagues. Organized byHarold B. Nelson, Curator of American Decorative Arts at The Huntington, theexhibition gathers together works from several private and public collectionsto shed new light on the rich network of influences and exchanges thatdeveloped among artists and artisans living in the Pomona Valley during thisdynamic period in American art. A fully illustrated color catalogue by Nelsonaccompanies the exhibition. (Huntington.org)

SAMFAC’s contribution to Pacific Standard Time is an intimateexhibition of the work of the two finest woodturners of the era, both profoundly influenced and inspired by Sam Maloof. BobStocksdale (1913-2002), considered the dean of the Americanwoodturning movement, and Ed Moulthrop (1916-2003), thefather of modern woodturning, helped establish woodturning asa widely respected art form. It was no accident that these menshared a warm friendship in words and wood with theircontemporary, Sam Maloof.

The voluminous archives and well-catalogued objects in theMaloof collections document Sam Maloof 's close relationshipswith Moulthrop and Stocksdale, providing a rare insight into thepersonal and professional joys and hardships shared amongfriends working in parallel professions. Sam Maloof emerges as akey player in the studio woodturning field through the inspirationand support he provided for two of its earliest advocates.

Curated by Jason T. Busch, Curatorial Chair for Collections atthe Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, PA, In Words andWood features more than 30 exquisite woodturnings byMoulthrop and Stocksdale, along with original correspondenceand documents. Together with The Huntington's The House ThatSam Built SAMFAC’s exhibition sheds new light on therelationship of Pacific Standard Time to the modern Americanwoodturning movement.
