From The Editor’s desk Catharsis- Cleansing In and Out: Theme of the month
“Wash me, and I shall be brighter than thou; Cleanse me from secret faults; Create a clean
heart in me, O Lord!”
Have you been feeling a bit off? Or you feel tired or drained or pulled in multiple directions? If so, it may be the time for Catharsis. We all encounter dense negative energy every day and might not be even aware of it until it builds up a castle inside. Good news is, Catharsis can help us! The word Catharsis is coined from the Greek word which is translated as ‘Cleansing or Purification’. Catharsis can be any activity which acts as an outlet for the pent up negative emotions, habits, unrequited things within ourselves or in our surroundings; in simple terms, to part with undesired physical or mental waste. Discarding these unnecessary impediments will unburden you and leave you feeling light; as light as a bird soaring in the sky. Catharsis, or cleanliness, is also associated with hygiene, which necessitates good health. It is important to take bath, eat well, get enough rest, avoid consuming toxic substances and not overindulge. Keeping homes beautiful and clean by dusting the dirt, de-cluttering and keeping things orderly is important to keep your surroundings clean and taking care of space. Although, these external mechanical processes are essential to keep away the distractions and surround you with positive energy, real cleanliness means cleaning your mind and soul. It is easy to succumb to the negative emotions like greed, ego, anger, but it is more difficult to stay detached. These emotions are quite common but it is essential to acknowledge as they block our progress, materialistic as well as spiritual. It is never too late to reflect on our actions and begin making positive changes. There are numerous ways which may serve as our Catharsis. Let’s us begin with the classic one, ‘Meditation’. It is surely a practice to connect with our highest self but most importantly it is a powerful process to break the circuit of negative emotions. It is generally portrayed as a complicated practice, especially said to be not meant for kids, but it can be as easy as counting our breath. One of the interesting ways is, kids can imagine holding a mug of Hot chocolate and breathe slowly as if they are smelling the cocoa, and breathe out as if they are trying to cool down hot chocolate. And Viola! They start meditating without even realizing. Another effective way for little elder age groups is ‘Journaling- or writing daily ’. Beyond keeping the kid’s creative juices flowing on a piece of paper, it can act as a cathartic release valve for them. Even colouring a Cosmic Mandala can help channelize kid’s destructive emotions to the constructive ones. Last but not the least, including affirmations like ‘I love myself’, ‘my friends like me for who I am’ etc. during the pillow talks can make the kids feel contented with themselves. So, just find your way of catharsis and practice religiously.

FAMILY DAY CELEBRATIONS ‘Family is like a tree. We, the branches, grow in different directions yet our
roots remain the same’. ‘The Salwanians’, including the students, parents, teaching and non-teaching fraternity, share a strong bond amongst each other and each year Family Day is celebrated on May 1 to strengthen this bonding. This year also, despite the confinement, the Salwan Family celebrated the day with a wider objective of ‘Vasudev Kutumbakam’ through the virtual classroom. An insight on ‘The world as a family’ was provided to the students by the teachers followed by a discussion on their contribution to bring peace and harmony in the world.
The celebration concluded with the rendition of the school song ‘Hum hain Salwanian’.
‘Hum Hai Salwanian’
LABOUR DAY ‘No work is insignificant. All labour that uplifts humanity has dignity and
importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence’, as stated by
Martin Luther King Jr. To mark the day for all the servicemen and
servicewomen, the learners were motivated to respect the dignity of work,
irrespective of any kind. They were further encouraged to express their gratitude
towards them by giving them loud round of applause and salutes.

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION God can’t be everywhere, and therefore he gave the most beautiful and precious
gift to us whom we call Mothers. Students of Pre-Primary Wing and Classes I to
V celebrated Mother’s Day on May 8 through virtual platform. Students
exhibited their love and gratitude for their mothers through their innocent
gestures and activities. They danced with their mothers, participated in cooking
without fire, made chef’s hats for their mothers and made their mothers feel
special by the rendition of songs and poems. Mothers eagerly participated in the
celebrations by twinning their outfits with their wards. Little Salwanians
surprised their mothers with self-created Mother’s Day cards and Oreo ladoos.
Glimpses of Mother’s day celebrations
YELLOW COLOUR DAY CELEBRATION The students of Kindergarten celebrated Yellow Colour
Day virtually on May 15 through various activities. They
enhanced their language and fine motor skills by singing an
energizer song “Oh! Mr. Sun”. They improved their
aesthetic skills by understanding the significance of food,
insects, animals, cartoon, festivals, flowers and objects of
yellow colour. They improved their sensorial and culinary

Beyond the Textbooks
HERITAGE QUIZ World Heritage Day is observed on April 18 every year. Like every year, this
year too, Social Science faculty conducted Heritage Quiz virtually wherein
students of classes III to V enhanced their knowledge about the rich heritage of
our country through interesting facts followed by a self-check quiz on Google
form.
WORKSHOP ON ‘COMMON ERRORS IN MATHEMATICS’
Mathematics department organized a virtual
workshop on ‘Common Errors in Mathematics’ for
the students of Class IX on May 15 2020. The
workshop provided suggestions and solutions to
avoid the computational and conceptual errors in
Mathematics. The session was interactive as the
students shared their personal issues related to
Mathematics. The session concluded with the
discussion of ‘Mathematical fallacies’.
SESSIONS ON STUDY SKILLS Sessions on study skills were conducted virtually for the students of Classes VI to
VIII in the month of May. The sessions emphasized the need to learn study skills
and the role of planning and organizing while studying. Time management and
goal setting skills were the highlights of the sessions. The students were further
guided for studying smartly and to make SMART goals (S-specific-M-measurable,
A-achievable-R-realistic and T-time bound).
A format of flexible study time table with short breaks was shared with the
students and different memorization techniques like Note Making, Mind Maps, and
Image Name etc. were also discussed. Healthy food habits and sound sleep was
also described. The session wrapped up with a message for students to believe in
themselves and to learn from their mistakes.
PARENT-TEACHER INTERACTION PTM is an effective and great platform for the teacher and parents as they both
share their insights and which helps to know the two sides of the student- strong
and weak point and it results in the development of a child's holistic future.
Teachers resorted to the virtual platform with the same objective in mind and the
PTMs were planned for classes III-V on 13, 14 and 16th May respectively. Parents
were quite appreciative of the efforts put in by teachers and school authorities for
running online classes successfully and staying connected with children. The
queries of the parents were taken up by the Vice Principal and the Principal. The
parents submitted the feedback of virtual classes through a Google Form thereafter.

STUDENT–TEACHER INTERACTION "It's the little conversations that build the relationships and make an impact on each student."
- Robert John Meehan
Student-Teacher interaction always strengthens the
bond between a teacher, a student and amongst
classmates. In one among many such interactions, the
learners were encouraged to introduce themselves to
their classmates. They felt quite confident and
motivated while expressing themselves. The educator
interacted with each learner and asked about their well-
being. The learners displayed their creative work to
their fellow students and the educators. The educators
wholeheartedly appreciated the learners and
thoroughly enjoyed the session.
A TALE WITH A TWIST “And you thought there was only one exit door...” ― L. M. Fields
Storytelling and reading take the learners to different
places. Stories and tales with a twist helps them to
understand that there can be different ways to find
multiple solutions to any problem. The first virtual
summer activity of 'A Tale with a Twist' started with great
enthusiasm and energy for Grade I. The educators
prepared beautiful mascots and dressed themselves up
like the characters of the tale to make the session
interesting and engaging for learners. Educators narrated
the already known tale by giving it a new twist and flavour.
Quiz was conducted after the tale to test the listening skills
and understanding of learners. There was a twist in the
quiz as well as learners were supposed to give answers in
the form of various 'Hand and Eye exercises'. They
completely enjoyed the session and were finally assigned
the task to do the activity of bookmark related to the tale
with the twist.
WONDER CHEF “Cooking with kids is not just about ingredients, recipes and cooking. It’s about harnessing
imagination, empowerment, and creativity --Guy Fieri
With this firm belief, Wonder Chef and Personality Development session was conducted to enhance
the overall personality of the child thereby making
him/her more confident and responsible. The
learners and our educator chef were fully ready
with the chef cap, the ingredients required and the
whole set-up to conduct the activity of ‘Cooking
without fire’. Under the guidance of our educator
chef, the little dainty chefs prepared delicious and
nutritious garlic toast. They were then told the
right way of eating the dish through a
demonstration of table etiquettes and manners.
The little ones sincerely followed the instructions
of their educators and thoroughly enjoyed the
session.
PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT “Personal development is a major time-saver. The better you become, the less time it takes you to
achieve your goals.” ―Brian Tracy
The objective of the workshop was to groom students spiritually, develop self-confidence,
enhance self-esteem and improve overall personality. The session aimed at sensitizing
students about proper conduct, socially and professionally at both formal and informal
occasions.
The following were the highlights of the session:
Appearance Body language Communication
Clean face
Smiling face
Ironed and formal clothes
Polished shoes
Well done hair

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY CELEBRATION “What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to
ourselves and to one another.”-Mahatma Gandhi
The theme for World Environment Day, 5 June 2020 was
biodiversity — a call to combat the accelerating species loss and
degradation of the natural world. One million plant and animal
species risk extinction, largely due to human activities. Educators
explained that each one of us has a role to play in checking
biodiversity loss. As individuals we must show smartness in what
we buy and use and become conscious consumers. Students were
encouraged to contribute in changing the current grim scenario.
They were made to LEARN about what they can do and then
SHARE that knowledge with their families and friends. The
learners and educators were purposely dressed up in blue and
green colours thereby promoting the current need to take care of
the environment. After the session, the learners were asked to
prepare a ‘Bird / Water feeder’ as a home activity.
ARTISTRY
“Art is as natural as sunshine and as vital as nourishment.” - MaryAnn F. Kohl
The role of the visual arts in early childhood education has long
been recognized and valued as an essential component of the
curriculum. Art nurtures the child to be inventive as it engages
the child in a process that helps in the development of self-
esteem, self-discipline, cooperation and self-motivation. During
the session, a story was narrated like a Waldorf table story using
the naturally available objects like a stone, a seed and a small
little caterpillar. After this, they were guided to make a
caterpillar by using materials such as socks, dupattas, few rubber
bands etc. In this way, they were taught to use easily available
materials effectively and efficiently. Children enjoyed the artistry
part very much and were keen to learn making other soft toys.
They were also exhorted to make one soft toy which they can
donate to another child as a fine gesture.
SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS In order to explore and learn, several experiments were conducted by students with the
support of their parents and educators. Fun activities and experiments such as garden yoga,
moving water, dancing ghosts, object identification in relation to weight and density etc.
were performed enthusiastically by the learners. They were told the reason behind each
activity. The little ones were amazed to see the magic happening. However, by then, they
had known the logic for every magic. Science is the study of facts. At the same time, science
is also about discovering the world around us, of knowing things, and having new and
wonderful idea. The learning that takes place in classrooms alone is not true learning. For
fostering scientific learning in early childhood, active, hands-on learning is very important
and this can best be achieved through science lab experiments. Keeping in mind fruitful
engaging of students along with scholastic work, Science experiments were conducted for
classes III – V on every Saturday in the month of June. Experiments were conducted
through zoom sessions and the students conducted them at their homes with the support of
their parents and under the guidance of the teacher. Experiments were chosen by keeping
in mind the materials that are available at home. Some of the experiments conducted were
as follows:
FATHER’S DAY CELEBRATION
“It is a wise father that knows his own child” - William Shakespeare
Dad holds our hands for a little while and holds our hearts forever. The role of a father is
very significant in the life of a child. A virtual session was conducted to celebrate fatherhood
and to pay tribute to the unwavering support of father. During the session, Father-child got
dressed in the colour coordinated attire. A presentation was shown to cherish their bond.
The fathers felt touched and got a little emotional. Fathers, while expressing their feelings,
appreciated the efforts of school authorities and educators for the celebration. They said
such type of events help them to know their children better and also help them to nurture
their relationship with the children.
After the presentation, tattoo making activity was conducted wherein the father made
creative tattoo on the hand/arm of the child and the little ones also showcased their art and
creativity by reciprocating the gesture. Newspaper dance activity was also taken up very
sportingly by the participants. The girls performed ball dance on the newspaper with their
fathers while the boys shook their leg in Bhangra style on the newspaper with their fathers.
The educators shared the significance and relevance of celebrating Father’s Day and
encouraged the little ones to know more about their super dads and their childhood
memories. It was truly an enriching experience for all the participants.
A VIRTUAL TOUR TO DISNEYLAND “Travel is still the most intense mode of learning.” -Kevin Kelly
To travel is to learn. As we cannot go out for travelling these days due to pandemic, so to
add joy and curiosity among learners, a virtual tour to Disney Land, California was organized
for our little ones. The learners were all set for the virtual tour with their favorite cartoon
characters, props, caps, goggles and their favorite eatables. They were extremely excited
and enthusiastic about the tour. A 3D presentation was shown to the learners wherein it
appeared as if they boarded a small boat to travel across the Disney Land. The journey
included various cartoon characters and 300 animated dolls of diverse countries, singing and
dancing together thereby propagating the message of global peace and unity. This virtual
tour emphasized the theme of ‘A small world’ we all are part of. The learners enjoyed their
snacks, played statue games and had a great time with their friends. It was a wonderful
experience for each of the little one.
FIT SALWANIANS Keeping in mind the need of the hour to focus on health and immunity, ‘Integrated Home
Project’ was given to the little learners of Grade I & II with the theme of ‘Fitness’. The
sessions on meditation were conducted for
classes III – V on the second, third and fourth
Saturday of the month of June by Ms. Rakhi and
Ms. Neelam. The sessions commenced with the
discussion on the meaning of meditation
followed by the importance of meditation, its
benefits and techniques. The students
participated in the session with great
enthusiasm and tried to practice the technique
and posture of meditation with sincerity. DIY
link for physical exercises on general fitness was
shared with the students of classes VI-VIII as a
correlation with the FIT Salwanian Theme
DO IT YOURSELF
During the month of June, the students enjoyed activity based learning. It was aimed at
making the students develop their thinking skills and creativity. Do-It-Yourself activities
were shared through links so that the students were able to devote time to learn about art
and craft, music, dance, exercises and perform science experiments. DIY link for Thanka
Painting was also shared with the students to make them learn about the Sikkim’s art.
ALUMNI CONNECT Human interactions are opportunities either to learn or to teach. ‘Alumni Connect’
interactive sessions with our alumni from Science, Commerce and Humanities were
organised. ‘Alumni Connect’ for Humanities Stream was organized on 16 June 2020. For

GROWING THROUGH INTROSPECTION “When you find yourself cocooned in isolation and cannot find your way out of darkness,
remember that this is similar to the place where a caterpillar grows its wings.”
I recently stumbled upon this quote and it made me realize that some days can be harder
than others. However, it is the time when we discover ourselves. It seemed really difficult to
stay confined initially in just one place but gradually, I got into the routine. Juggling between
school and extra classes that I was really busy with, are not that important now. The excuse
that “I don’t have time” has expired. I have time to read all the books that I once bought but
never opened, learnt a new language (Korean), watched all the movies on my list, helped my
mom with household chores and played chess with my little brother. But the most
important thing that I have learnt through introspection is - Being grateful. There are many
things that we take for granted; I’ve realized the importance of the freedom that we have
and the joy of spending time with my family. The period of confinement has helped me
evolve, upgrade and be resilient to change. Be grateful for little things in life; not to get
caught up in what we can’t control and focus on the positive side.
Ananya Pandey (Class X)
LESSONS OF LIFE The most important thing I have learnt during this ongoing confinement is the time
management. I have realized that we must utilize each moment of our lives. Another thing
that I have learned is the value of patience. The fate of the world quite literally depends on
people being patient and staying inside their homes. The current scenario is a great way to
focus on ourselves. We must look at the positive aspect of things and try to be as productive
as possible while maintaining our duty as responsible citizens and obeying the rules
religiously. I have learned many household chores like cooking, stitching, doing the laundry
and dishes along with my family members. I also have developed a passion for sketching.
For me, sketching is a way to communicate pictorially and thus it conveys more emotions
than words. We can be benefitted from the opportunities that have emerged with this
situation and not just remain busy but be effective.
Shubhangi Malviya (Class IX)
A TRANSFORMATIONAL JOURNEY Year 2020 started with a turmoil, which has put nations to standstill. Supreme powers of the world are fighting against all the odds to save human life. It’s been almost two months of confinement and I realized that how it has brought a very big and an unexpected change in my life. Earlier, I used to have a tight study schedule and did not bother on maintaining hygienic habits. However, now I have become more responsible regarding maintaining hygienic habits to protect myself. I now enjoy the weekends by spending some good family time which was lost before this situation. Being a foodie, it was a tough task initially to avoid outside eating as I used to go to the restaurants regularly to try different cuisines. But as dining out can become an easy medium for the virus to spread, I opted for cooking myself and eating nutritious food at home. To deal with one of my greatest enemy i.e. anger, I started meditation which always keeps me patient and calm. In the beginning, it was very difficult to adopt a sudden change in life and also staying away from all the activities I used to do before. But I continued guiding myself to push further because if you have faith and belief, anything is possible.
It is a challenging phase for all of us and has many negative impacts but has a brighter side also. It has transformed me and my lifestyle, for good. I finally have learnt the importance of individual growth, which is not just only being productive in studies but also doing activities which I like.
Anika Srivastava (Class IX)
STRENGTH FROM THE STORM The present scenario has compelled the world to think and revisit their commitments towards nature and human life. It has taught us many things including moral and physical values. People are complaining to be aimless and jobless during these days. But one should remember that there should be a balance between the individual rights and public safety. The most important thing one learnt during the so called awful period is to appreciate the nature. Humans at home changed the way the living world moves, for the better. Mother Earth is under repair-human activities are paused and nature is blooming with its absolute beauty. Another interesting fact is that everyone has realized the importance of digitalization in all the spheres of lives ranging from banking, marketing up to education sector. We, the students, have learnt many new things, whether it be household chores or inculcating the habit of self-study. The most important thing it has edified is to know the value of one’s family and standing together during the time of hardships and adversities. If we stand unified we can face and win over this difficult situation easily. Just because we are in a stressful situation doesn’t mean that we have to get stressed out. We may be in the storm; the key is not letting the storm to get in.
Veronika Dhingra (Class X)
AN OATH TO CLEAN OUR ‘KARMAS’ The world has pushed a pause button,
We have come to a standstill,
It is a human crisis,
But in a way also God's will.
We dug mother earth and all her layers,
For metros, for trains and for rails.
We made the high skyscrapers,
Touch the white cloud's veil.
We killed all her children,
For food or skin or joy.
We made the mute suffer,
And treated them as a toy.
We thought we owned the whole world,
We're rulers of the land.
We increased the pollution so much,
Those forests turned into sand.
We are the ones responsible
For melting glacier ice;
We are the ones responsible
To nature, we were not nice.
But now when tables have turned,
We are stuck inside our home.
We see the earth smiling again,
And animals are free to roam.
Even though this crisis is harsh,
It has taught us a new way to live.
We have taken enough from nature,
Now it's our turn to give.
And the world will be normal again
Let's have this promise said,
We will pledge to save nature
For generations to come ahead.
Aarav Gupta (Class VII)
WHEN THE BIRDS CHIRRUP... When the birds all start chirruping
When the priests all start singing,
When the sky’s lights come on
And when the sun starts to show,
Then, my dear
Do the buds glow
And then, my dear
Do the dew drops show.
When the stars all start coming
And when the dusk has done settling,
When the birds are all asleep
And the moon pulls away its veil,
Then, my dear
Do the war horns blow
And then, my dear
Do the warriors stop.
When the sun is at its peak
And when the wind is all but a breeze,
And when the watermelon tastes so sweet
And when the children all roam free,
Then, my dear
Do the real fighters are born,
And then, my dear
Do the flowers all bloom.
That’s the time
When you should know
That you have
Lovers at home.
Somya Yadav (Class XII)
THE TRANSFORMATIONS It was late, winter night
All fell asleep,
lost in disoriented fantasies
my eyes didn’t drop, stayed
wide awake
which saw the falling stars
deployed from damaged façade
The white light
Captivated my soul,
Each atom collided to meet their dole
Sun set off farmer’s fancy brim
edifying crops, yesterday trimmed
Heat wave flew miles,
Rushing down my spine
I could now comprehend
The transformations made then,
Light into kinetic
reaching the potential
it was never lost
neither will it be, energy
that lingered across the
bottomless universe’s sea.

TIME TO IMPROVE OURSELVES Containment, a word that has made the human world to halt within a span of
few months. Hardly anyone knew that it’ll put a “comma” on our daily routine.
As if it is the nature’s game play to make us realize, what we have done to her.
Although, we lost a number of people across the world due to the pandemic,
there are many things that we learned our way. We, humans have compelled
the Mother Nature to take revenge in its own way for spoiling her sanity with
our deeds. Today the sky is clear, rivers are singing and dancing, flora & fauna
are flourishing, thanking Mother Nature in its own ways. It seems like the
entire world has come to its originality.
The change can be observed in people’s perceptions also. It took a huge a loss
for us to realise how important it is to respect nature, respect each other,
forget the cast, creed or religion and become one individual. Blessing in
disguise, this virus taught us to be ONE, a true human being, taught us
humanity. Oneness is emerging from everywhere, where everybody is ready to
help each other, without a selfish motive, but with a motive to save the world.
The time when we used to miss each other’s company due to our daily chores,
has come to an ease. Today we have time for each other and for ourselves.
During this period, I have realised that it’s not our daily needs and lives that
are expensive; it’s the show off of our luxuries that cost everything. Simple
food over fast food, simple living over luxury living – is far healthier than what
we were living in. I have realised the importance of hard work and physical
labour, which our grandparents, great grandparents used to do. It’s important
to invest on medical policies and fitness than to spend on watching movies and
for other sources of entertainment, and that should be secondary. Well, now is
the time to maintain our fitness, our peace of mind by meditating, yoga for at
least an hour a day. It is the time to make the best out of ourselves; make all
efforts in improving ourselves.

exercises, meditation, yoga and practical wisdom for daily living. It fosters deep and

various meditative practices to help create balance and avoid burn-outs. She said that living
in the present is the key solution to the challenges thrown by life at human beings. She also

to create children who are physically, emotionally and spiritually sound. In her address, she
requested the Parents to encourage their children to share their likes-dislikes, communicate
their fears and aspirations with them. She encouraged the Parents to inculcate in their
children virtues of sharing-giving so as to make the child a socially responsible human being,
and to focus on holistic education, the whole brain concept. She inspired the parents to
promote meditative practices and physical activities with their wards as these would
sharpen their brain. Ms Srinivasan spoke about 3 trusts and instilling balance in children.
According to her, the three traits that parents should inculcate in the child are –
encouraging the child to take their own decisions, have trust in society and its norms and
last but not the least, faith in higher power. Expounding her concept of instilling balance in
children she said to give space to the child for both success and failure, make children
responsible, self-reliant, help them to develop right attitude for work, avoid comparisons
