Magician of the Year Sol Stone No one knows where creativity comes from. For Sol Stone was it the floating, talking head at the Thurston Magic Show he saw and spoke to at the age of nine? Was it watching as a boy, the great Al Flosso and Jean Hugard in Coney Island that started it all? Did it develop during the Depression while visiting Abe Hurwitz in a Lower East Side park where he also first met old friend PA#1 Dean Ken Krenzel? Did it bloom after being shot down during WWII and then making a dramatic escape to freedom during which he entertained refugee children outside a drafty boxcar? Was it the 51 Cent Routine he developed at this time that, years later Dai Vernon and his friend Eddie Balducci loved? We may never know but this creativity has resulted in a deep respect by his fellow magicians and long, strong friendships. Some have passed like Emil Jarrow and Martin Gardner.

One of those friends still very much with us is Richard Kaufman, Editor of the national magic magazine Genii who, in his youth, was brought to the magicians’ gathering at Governors by Rene Clement to first meet Sol. Of Sol Richard wrote, “Sol Stone is one of magic’s greatest treasures.” Last year’s Magician of the Year Doug Edwards, a regular at the Ruben’s gatherings, states about Sol, “He was instrumental in creating future legends in the world of Magic.” Magician Tony Noice’s friendship with Sol goes back to just after post WWII gatherings at Tannen’s and Hector’s. He states Sol Stone was the man, “Who made this card guy love coin work.” Or his friend Gerald Deutsch who can often be found at Café Rustico today sharing magic with Sol says, “I have known Sol Stone for so many years and he has been a very good friend as we share our love of magic. I’ve seen Sol always so happy to share what he knows with others. Sol is known for his wonderful coin magic but Sol does more than that. He does magic with rings, links, dice and yes – cards. Sol’s approach is ‘soft’ – he does ‘soft sleeving’ and a false count with cards which, because of its ‘softness’ and relaxed handling helps to fool his audience.” He adds, “And Sol believes in presentation – that the effect must be strong – which in my opinion is the most important part of magic – as I’ve heard him say so many times ‘If you labor like a mouse and give birth to an elephant it’s magic but if you labor like an elephant and give birth to a mouse it’s tragic.’ ” But Sol’s greatest fan is his wife Alice. He first met her at a birthday party. She was only 17 and when he asked the beautiful young woman in the magenta dress to assist him she shuffled the stacked deck ruining Sol’s planned effect. Although Alice created an uncomfortable situation for Sol at this family gathering that did not stop him from calling her for a date shortly thereafter. Within a few years they were married. They are still married and have a wonderful family. Perhaps Sol’s greatest trick of all is the happy life he has created for all who love him. Perhaps we should be awarding him ”Magician of the Years.”

PRODUCER’S MESSAGEIllustrious Past President Ken Ferst I joined the Society of American Magicians Parent Assembly #1 in 2002, the same assembly of which Harry Houdini and many greats of magic were members. In 2006 I was asked to help out in the production of the 97th Salute to Magic as its ticket chairperson and have held that position for seven of the past eight years. The only time I was not the ticket chairperson was in 2010 when, as first vice president, I was the Executive producer for the 101st ,which was a smaller, more intimate program. For the past 5 years, I held a vision of a larger show in a larger venue. Along with my wife Cheryl and her family, we have been coming to the Queens Theater over the years to enjoy many of their programs. They always told me that this would be a great

venue for our magic show. Willy Mosquera and I have spoken over the years about bringing our show to the Queens Theatre. Finally last fall, it all came together. He introduced me to the Managing Director, Taryn Sacramone and as they say, “the rest is history.” Speaking of history, as President in 2010, I had both the honor and pleasure to swear in our current President and my Co-Producer, The Great Throwdini, as a member of our great society. With all his experience and knowledge, TGT offered to help and join me as co-producer at our first meeting with the Queens Theatre to discuss using their venue for our 105th Salute to Magic. Before the meeting, as I sat on a bench awaiting for him to arrive, I looked over to the beautiful Unisphere located just about 100 yards away from the theater. At that moment, vivid memories of the 1964 New York World’s Fair came to mind. In fact, I was able to imagine the exhibits, people, and sounds. Then it hit me, 2014 will be the 50th anniversary. Upon his arrival, Throwdini mentioned that it was also the 75th anniversary of the 1939 World’s Fair. And so, the subtitle of our 105th Salute to Magic was born: “Commemorating the role of magic in the 1939 and 1964 New York World’s Fairs.” Magic and the S.A.M. PA#1 have always been well-entrenched in the rich history of the World’s Fairs, and so, as producer, I encourage you to take in all the events that will be going on throughout the celebration. And while you are comfortably in your seats, sit back, and let the childhood awe of watching live magic from some of the world’s greatest magicians of our time mystify you.

PRESIDEnT’S MESSAGEThe Most Illustrious Dr. David R. Adamovich (Throwdini)

As a performer with name recognition in the magic community I was invited to join the Parent Assembly in 2010. It made sense; although not a traditional magician, I am a professional knife thrower who performs in magic venues worldwide. And so I came to share ideas with the esteemed compeers of the Parent Assembly. Two years ago Richie Magic, now the Parent Assembly’s Ambassador of Magic, invited me to perform in the 103rd Annual Salute to Magic. I was thrilled as it gave me the opportunity to premiere something never done in the impalement arts, the Veiled Double (two target girls) Wheel of Death. A standing ovation later — history was made! The Annual Salute to Magic will forever hold a dear place in my heart. As President Magic was finishing his term as the 73rd

President of the Parent Assembly he asked me if I would run as number 74. It didn’t take long to answer YES. So here I am today, host and co-producer of the longest running annual magic show in history, the 105th Annual Salute to Magic, a role fulfilled by Harry Houdini during his reign as our first president. Wow, what an honor. Moreover, it gives me the pleasure of presenting Sol Stone as Magician of the Year. Addressing the audience in our 103rd Annual Salute I said that this is not just a Salute to MAGIC but in fact a Salute to MAGICIANS — the performers who stand before you. They do so not to fool you but to capture a piece of childhood innocence that lies within, that innocence which remains in awe about what just happened without thinking about how it happened. So at least for this evening, sit back, relax and enjoy the wonders of magic.

Magic is an art that is both innovative and yet steeped in tradition. It celebrates both the new and the old. Nowhere in the world can more tradition and creativity be found than in New York City, the place The Society of American Magicians was formed in 1902. For 105 years S.A.M. Assembly 1 has presented The Salute to Magic, an event that not only presents the best magic in the world on stage but also brings the best magicians in the world together in the audience. This year is no exception as this year’s cast are the best of the best. Producer Ken Ferst, President David Adamovich and all of the compeers of the Parent Assembly are to be congratulated for bringing Jay Scott Berry, The Devlins, David Oliver and Jeff McBride together in the beautiful Queens Theatre in the Park, the site of the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs.

MAY 17, 2014

The Salute to Magic is the longest running continuous magic show in the world. How did it get started?

They gathered by gaslight in the back of the old Martinka Palace of Magic in NYC. Their numbers were eight to ten. Alexander Herrmann, Dr. Saram R. Ellison, Nate Leipzig, Dr. W. Golden Mortimer, Harry Kellar, Frank Ducrot, Carl Hertz and Elmer P. Ransom all were guests on those evenings. They soon began calling themselves the “Saturday Night Club.” The Martinka brothers, Francis and Antonio, never charged them for the use of their facility.

“By wand or wit, a skilled magician can fling open the doors to a parallel universe of baffling possibility, piquing the far reaches of human imagination. Magicians upend our assumptions about the way the world works, making us literally not believe our eyes. This doubt is magic’s power. But this doubt is also the audience’s reward, a reminder of the pleasure of uncertainty and the virtue of suspended disbelief. Magic seems to tell us that the real danger is not in appearing to consort with the Devil or bend the laws of nature, but in thinking that we already know all there is to know.”

Daniel, Noel (2009). Magic 1400s–1950s. Los Angeles: TASCHEN.

Past President Elmer P. Ransom wrote: “Dr. Ellison was a daily visitor to Martinka’s shop. From time to time during the 15 years of unorganized Saturday nighters, Francis J. Martinka suggested to Ellison that he get some of the regular guests into an organized society formed for the promotion of friendship among magicians and furtherance of the art of magic.” Dr. Ellison took this to heart and with a lot of hard work on May 10th, 1902 the Society of American Magicians was born. The newly formed group honored him by awarding membership card number 1. The Martinkas had built a small stage for the magicians to perform on and soon invitation only performances began. As the years happily passed the Martinka brothers talked of retirement and the S.A.M. would have to plan for the future. One of these plans was to raise funds to provide for the future of the society. On April 15, 1909 the “First Magic Vaudeville Presentation” was staged before the public at the Berkley Theatre on 44th Street near Fifth Avenue. The next three annual shows were held at Carnegie Hall with such notable magicians as Dunninger, Houdini and Dante. The annual show came to the Heckscher Theater in the 1930s with Fredrick Eugene Powell, Cardini, and Dai Vernon gracing its stage. The Annual Salute to Magic continues to present some of the greatest magic acts in history.

At a time when it is possible to tap into the sights and sounds of nearly any corner of the earth without leaving home, it is easy to forget about the excitement and eager anticipation inspired by the 1939 and 1964 New York World’s Fairs. The events exposed millions of local residents and visitors to a wide range of people, food, entertainment, and technology from around the world. Magic and magicians were highlighted in significant ways at both fairs, and major national magic conventions were held in New York in 1939 and 1964 specifically to coincide with the two events.

The year was 1939. Germany was but months away from invading Poland and initiating WWII in Europe. Back in New York City the Society of American Magicians was meeting for its 11th Annual Convention, coinciding with the New York World’s Fair. S.A.M. President Nate Leipzig met with Grover A. Whalen, President of the New York World’s Fair Corporation and planned a Magic Day with parades and shows.

The year was 1964. The first Mustang was about to be rolled out at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. Jimmy Hoffa was sentenced to 8 years, and Jack Ruby was sentenced to death for Lee Harvey Oswald’s murder. Back in New York magician Mark Wilson produced the Hall of Magic to appear at the General Cigar exhibit of the upcoming World’s Fair. Mark Wilson performed just once in the show and then turned it over to the young and upcoming Kamarr, Milbourne Christopher, Randi, and a magician from Texas, among others. Rumor has it the Texan was drinking a bit too much before his shows and didn’t last long. PA 1 President-to-be David Adamovich was a senior in Newtown High School, Elmhurst, and performed acrobatic routines at the New York State Pavilion. A combined conference, The Fifth International Congress of Magicians, jointly presented by The International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Parent Assembly of the Society of American Magicians was going on in July, bringing even more magicians to the World’s Fair.

MAGIC SHOW. A magician causes human beings and objects to appear from nowhere, float about and vanish, in this 10-minute show staged three times an hour in the pavilion’s theater. Visitors may also puzzle over a “hand machine” - two life-sized hands projecting from strips of metal with nothing behind them, which move and make human gestures.

Kamarr the Magician. Of the many members of the Parent Assembly we are honored to have a lifetime working magician who can say, “Been there, done that.” Kamarr the Magician is a living legend and performed in Mark Wilson’s General Cigar Hall of Magic in the 1964 New York World’s Fair. Born on the Island of Kalymnos, Greece, Kamarr arrived in New York in 1964 to performing at the Greek Pavilion, for Ringling Brothers, and finally at Wilson’s Hall of Magic. After working the New York nightclubs Kamarr began working trans-Atlantic cruises for the Italian and Greek Lines and for the United States Line. He then worked the nightclubs of Chicago and finally settled back in New York with successful runs at the New York Playboy Club, The Chateau Madrid, The Riverboat (Empire State Building), and Dangerfield’s to name just a few. In 1975 Kamarr and his wife/assistant Georgianna were discovered by Miller, Reich Productions and booked into the Viva Caribbean and Fantastique Revues at El San Juan Hotel in Puerto Rico. After two successful six month runs in Puerto Rico, they traveled with Kamarr

the Fantastique Revue to the Chateau Champlain Hotel in Montreal, Canada. In 1983 Kamarr made his first appearance on Late Night with David Letterman. History was made and a world record established after 40 appearances on Letterman. Kamarr had become a household name in modern day magic. Selected TV credits include: Captain Kangaroo, The Joe Franklin Show, The Dick Cavett Show, Regis and Kathy Lee, The Morning Show (CBS), Live at Five, Door Knock Dinners, and Jerry Lewis Telethons. Kamarr also appeared in movies including: Crocodile Dundee, Scenes from a Mall, and Ishtar. Kamarr recently received a Presidential Citation for his lifEtiME AchiEvEMEnts in MAgic from PA President David Adamovich and salute producer Ken Ferst, and is scheduled to receive a citation from Taryn Sacramone of the Queens Theatre for his role in the 1964 New York World’s Fair.

From Houdini to Vernon, from Copperfield to Blaine, the New York magic scene has nurtured generations of accomplished and passionate conjurors. Today New York’s magic community continues to thrive, centered around the local magic stores, performance venues, magic clubs, and hang-out spots. Most magicians first find their way into the community of conjurors through one of the local magic stores. New York City’s longest-standing shop, Tannen’s, for example, has a rich history as a gathering point for local magicians which goes back to its start in 1925. Today, superstar conjurors like David Copperfield occasionally stop by, and any number of top flight magicians and up-and-comers can be found hanging out in its 34th Street showroom. Tannen’s is also active developing the next generation of local miracle-makers through its annual summer magic camp. Another nexus for magicians is Fantasma Magic. Located near Penn Station, visitors to Fantasma can catch a trick by its dynamic demonstrator Magick Balay and also enjoy the free Houdini Museum, which showcases original artifacts, posters, and other items that shed light on the career of the well-known escape artist. Other sources of magic materials and shop talk in Manhattan are the magic counters at Abracadabra NYC, on West 21st Street, and New York Costumes/Halloween Adventure on 4th Avenue and 11th Street. In Queens, Rogue has become the leading purveyor of magic, through his Rogue’s Magic and Fun Shop, on Queens Boulevard, and the nearby Rogue Magic Bar an exciting new venue where audiences can enjoy live magic several nights per week. Stage shows are featured there every Friday and Saturday night, and open mics on Monday and Tuesday provide performance opportunities to a wide range of magicians. The Parent Assembly’s own Richie Magic is making miracles in his two new Hocus Pocus Magic Shops in Dobb’s Ferry and Scarsdale. Tricky Business is home to magicians and balloon twisters in East Hempstead, New York, while in Port Jefferson Ronjo is the spot for a wide selection of magic and costumes. Magic is, after all, about live performance and some of the best magicians anywhere appear in the weekly Monday Night Magic shows at The Players Theatre in Greenwich Village. Steve Cohen’s show Chamber Magic provides the chance to experience amazing miracles in an intimate setting at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Fridays and Saturdays. Sam Eaton performs The Quantum Eye, a program of mentalism, magic, perception, and deception on Saturdays at Theatre 80 in the East Village. There is much camaraderie in the local magic clubs, including Parent Assembly 1 of the S.A.M. and Ring 26 of the International Brotherhood of Magicians in Manhattan, as well as other groups throughout the New York and New Jersey area. Magic thrives more casually at two informal gatherings. Every Saturday afternoon magicians get together at Rustico’s Pizza on West 35th Street to share tricks and hang out, and on Fridays magicians meet up at lunchtime at The Magic Table at Cafe Edison near Times Square. Anyone interested in magic is welcome to attend either of these meetings. For serious research on magical topics, there is the amazing Conjuring Arts Research Center, which has collections of magic materials from the 15th-century onward. Conjuring Arts also runs the Hocus Pocus Project, an outreach program which uses magic to build a sense of empowerment in disadvantaged children and adults. Magic lovers and practitioners of the art will find a deep bed of resources in the New York scene. It is quite possible that visitors to these magic spots will find themselves sharing tricks with one of the next superstars of the miracle-making profession, but no matter what, participation in the local magic community is sure to provide inspiration, knowledge, and enjoyment to anyone interested in the art of conjuring.

2014 MAGICIAN OF THE YEAR

Society of American MagiciansParent Assembly #1

May 17, 2014

Congratulations to

Dr. Sol Stone 2014 Magician of the Year

A Wonderful and

Influential Magician.

From Scott Mero & Jordan Linker

I was friendly with Johnny Benzais who was only in his early 20’s in 1965. He was recognized as one of the best young magicians at that time. He was friends with all of the top magicians in New York City and he introduced me to many of them at the 42 Street Cafeteria, and other magician hangouts. Johnny got a job selling Svengali Decks in the Entertainment Building at the Fair. I spent many evenings there watching him do his pitch, although many of the tricks he performed could not be done with the Svengali Deck unless you had many, many years of magic skills. I was his shill. I was the first one who bought the deck at the end of his pitch and then secretly returned the deck and redeemed my $5 when the crowd dispersed. I remember one time Johnny took out a $50 bill prior to the start of the spiel and tore it in half. He gave half to a pretty girl standing nearby and, after the performance, he said she could get the other half if she gave him a kiss. The girl turned and walked away so that neither was able to get any value from their half of the bill. It didn’t bother Johnny at all. After the Fair closed, he went to the Magic Castle to do a week or so of lectures. On his way back to New York he was in an auto accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike that required a hospital stay. Apparently, believing him recovered from the trauma, he was placed in a wheelchair and pushed to the front door of the hospital for release. When he got to the front door the nurse noticed that he had died. I lost a good friend and the magic world lost a great magician. It was a great loss to magic and I still miss our friendship.
