General Description

“Saltwater Gypsy” is substantial blue water cruising pilothouse ketch built in 1982. The aim

of the designer (Ian Anderson) was to produce a high quality yacht with the comfort and

advantages of a motorsailor but with the sailing performance of a good cruising yacht. He

achieved this. Gypsy is a much admired and well known yacht.

The displacement and hull shape make for an easy motion and good passage making times.

The deck saloon gives a panoramic outlook with good ventilation and there is

accommodation for six adults in three cabins. There is also a convertible double berth with

the saloon dining table lowered. There are two heads with showers and a well equipped

galley. The yacht has been continuously updated with particular emphasis on safety. (recent

major refits: 2004, 2011). The yacht has good sails with excellent safety and navigational

equipment.

The yacht is currently used for commercial skippered cruising around the West coast of

Scotland by the owner who is a wildlife guide and photographer as well as an MCA

Boatmaster instructor and MCA/RYA Ocean Yachtmaster Instructor. She has never been

used without the owner as skipper. Currently coded for 8 PAX to Category 2 (60 miles)

terminals have been renewed (2013). There are 12v and 24v alternators on the engine and

blocking diodes to distribute the charging current. The 24v system is monitored by a BEP

contour matrix dc voltage monitor and the 12v by an analogue meter. The 12v alternator was

renewed in 2012 and the 24v overhauled at the same time.

Each battery bank has a heavy duty isolator switch and individual circuits have contact

breakers. All the original wiring is in tinned copper with double insulated silicon rubber

insulation. Circuit diagrams are available for the original wiring.

GENERAL

The yacht is sold in commission with all necessary warps, fenders , boathooks, cushions etc

which are essential items for successful cruising.

Items required for the Category 2 (60 miles ) coding are included.

A part exchange for a good cruising 32-36 ft yacht would be considered.

Questions asked by prospective buyers interested in circumnavigations or similar:

I am looking for a sailing vessel in order to make a circumnavigation (see attachment). I am

not familiar with the Seastreams. Do you think your vessel may work out?

The yacht has already done one circumnavigation and five Atlantic circuits. The previous

owners sailed and cruised the Mediterranean (as live-aboards) for five years. The hull is in

excellent condition and is built of very heavy GRP construction. She also has an encapsulated

¾ keel and skeg hung rudder. She heaves-to very well which is useful in poor weather. Very

easy to sail single handed. The yacht is currently coded for 6 PAX to Category 2 (60 miles)

but has a stability rating of Category 0 (unlimited). Because she is used commercially, the

yacht has to be in excellent condition, especially safety wise. Also my cruises are not cheap

and the vessel reflects the high standards which my guests expect.

For Ocean sailing she has a twin groove luff on the forestay, two genoas and two spinnaker

poles which altogether are excellent for downwind sailing. There are currently 13 Seastream

43s either circumnavigating or making extended passages.

With respect to the vessel you have for sale, I have the following questions:

Is it the MK III version?

No, although the hull an all versions is the same, the Mk III was usually a sloop with main

difference being hull portholes fwd. All the Seastreams were made to order and so are

different in their layout.

Behaviour under sail in rough seas?

Brilliant – I am a professional sailor and used to being out in all conditions, the Seastream is

exceptional, I have on several occasions sailed her in open seas in 70+ knots (storm jib and

reefed mizzen) with no real concerns about the yacht (perhaps about me though!!)

Behaviour under anchor?

Using the mizzen sail as a steadying sail she is very stable and does not veer around at all.

The all round view from the very comfortable deck saloon makes her very comfortable as a

mobile home.

How would you describe her sailing characteristics? Is she a sailing boat or a motorsailor?

She was designed by Ian Anderson – who I knew before his death last year – with sailing

ability as the main concern. She sails very well indeed, but has a deck saloon for comfort! I

never sail her from the saloon but only from the cockpit. I disconnected the saloon steering

(easily restored) as it makes the steering feel of the yacht so much better. If necessary she

can be piloted from the saloon using the autopilot remote.

What has been done during the refits, esp. the last one?

The engine as rebuilt by Mercedes four years ago (1000 hours since), new gearbox, new

steering box and rod system. Many new electronics such as autopilot, inverter, new genoa,

new mizzen, new dinghy, new saloon upholstery, new heating system (Eberspacher D5),

rebuilt gas/fuel locker. Revision of wiring. New Fischer Panda 4.8Kva diesel generator.

New wind generator (2012). New very powerful bow thruster with remote control. New 24v

batteries (2012) 12v (2014).New Selden rod kicker. New main anchor chain – 80m 10mm –

and 35Kg Racnor anchor. LED tricolour plus LED interior lighting. Blakes seacocks renewed

Lots more as she is continually refitted.

Thickness and condition teak deck? Glued/screwed?

Page 11: Saltwater Gypsy - "Seastream 43 ketch for sale"seastreamforsale.com/Saltwater Gypsy2017.pdf · Saltwater Gypsy Seastream 43 Reg. No 700224 Glasgow (Part 1 UK) For Sale: £90,000 VAT

The teak decks are in good condition (originally ½ inch) and are both glued and screwed to

the substrate.

Thickness rigging?

7, 8 and 10mm

Condition hatches?

All in good condition although in some the Perspex is crazed. The overhead saloon hatches

as well as the galley passageway hatch are capable of being opened both fore and aft which is

wonderful for good ventilation in warm weather.

Signs of osmosis? Has this been checked?

No and it has been checked.

Material tanks? With manholes? When last cleaned?

All Stainless Steel tanks all clean. No manholes but relatively easy to access. Fuel tanks

were cleaned two years ago and have had additive added to all fillings since. Water is very

good, although the keel water tank (100 litres) is currently not used and would require

reinstatement/cleaning before use. It is in very good condition however. Fuel tanks currently

full for the winter.

Electrical wiring still original or renewed?

Some original (very high quality) some renewed

Thickness windows?

10mm toughened glass with plywood storm/damage covers for all saloon windows

Besides the aft cabin I need four individual berths. Is it possible to change the double bed in

the forecabin into two individual berths? (V-berth) On the Seastream website I saw that a V-

berth is original. Did you change that?

It would be difficult but feasible to alter the forecabin. There is also the saloon which can be

converted to a double berth by lowering the table or else the settee provides an excellent

single berth

I want to sail as green as possible: is it possible to install a windvane steering mechanism and

solar panels?

I removed existing solar panels due to damage. Windvane could be fitted OK but would

mean dinghy stowed on foredeck and perhaps aft ladder altered. I was thinking similar. The

existing wind generator supplies all needed power when under sail.

No watermaker. Correct?

There is no watermaker although one is fitted but is redundant and not capable of repair. I

intend to remove it this winter.

No AIS transponder. Correct?

AIS Class B transponder fitted 2017

No SSB sender. Correct?

NO SSB transmitter but receiver and aerial on Triatic stay/earth plates fitted for future use,

the yacht did have transceiver SSB fitted before.

Why do you sell?

I have been a professional sailor for 35 years, gradually my yachts have got smaller as I get

older (from 95ft downwards.) Now at 66 years of age – time for me to retire over the next

two years so I need to sell the yacht as I will need the money. I will buy something smaller

for my own use.

Sold subject to survey of course. The yacht is currently ashore for the winter and de-

commissioned. All sails etc are stored at my home. Following a sale, I would be willing to

help re-commission the yacht and if required help sail her to her new home, if my return

expenses are paid.
