SPRING 2013

Enhancing Our CityAs part of its vision for the future, Council is working to enhance the appearance of the city and to provide a range of ways for people to enjoy a healthy, connected lifestyle in the City of Salisbury.

“This Council is committed to encouraging and supporting a thriving and connected community,” said Gillian Aldridge, Mayor of Salisbury. “We want residents to have a sense of belonging and ownership in what happens in their city. Council wants to make living in Salisbury a great experience.

New programs will focus on enhancing the appearance of the region, with the refurbishment of buildings, switching on irrigation to Council-owned sports grounds, and the creation of new footpaths and trails. A range of healthy living programs will help residents to live longer and healthier lives, and learning programs will help residents make the most of their talents and opportunities.

Council will also be showcasing the region to attract sporting events, and encouraging community involvement in local events and activities. An awards scheme will recognise people going ‘above and beyond’ in their daily lives to benefit others.

Having called this fabulous city home for more than 45 years, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. I feel such a sense of belonging, community spirit and pride. This is what I want for everyone who lives here, for those who do business in the city, and for our guests who visit from far and wide.

As I go about my business, I meet residents from all over the city, and from all walks of life. I hear about the things that Council does well, and the things people would like Council to do better.

Many residents tell me how proud they are to live in a city renowned for its water management programs and beautiful wetlands. Others tell me how much they enjoy their local park, or taking their children or grandchildren to the many playgrounds we have around Salisbury.

Salisbury SnapshotYOUR GUIDE TO WHAT’S HAPPENING IN SALISBURY, WITH INFORMATION ABOUT THE CITY OF SALISBURY’S SERVICES AND PROGRAMS, AND CHANGES THAT AFFECT YOUR AREA.

Some of the most satisfying stories I hear are from people who have changed their lives through participating in one of Council’s wide range of programs. Recently, I’ve met people who are now employed thanks to a skills development program they did at a community centre. I’ve met others who were feeling isolated until they joined a local walking group, and many who are reaping the benefits of learning English with the support of our fabulous volunteers.

I talk to people who use our sports club facilities and recreation centres and they tell me how important it is for them to be involved in their local club or team. This is what makes me proud to be a Salisbury resident and even more proud to be Mayor of this great city.

As you will see in this edition of Snapshot, Council is continuing to invest in making Salisbury an even better place to live, work or visit, using the feedback that we receive from people like you.

Gillian Aldridge JP

Developments in Salisbury are RisingLocal businesses are re-investing in Salisbury as they undergo expansion and create new jobs despite difficult economic times.

NewSat Ltd, based at Mawson Lakes has finalised US$611 million in funding for its Jabiru-1 satellite project that will be built in partnership with Lockheed-Martin.

To support the expansion, land adjacent to the existing facility in Mawson Lakes has been purchased and employment will be created for people in administration and technical services.

Meanwhile, Stage Two of the Mawson Lakes Shopping Centre has opened representing a $40 million investment in the area and creating more jobs across a variety of retail sectors.

A new $7 million fire station is planned for Salisbury East to cut response times and to meet growing demands within the northern Adelaide area and Liebherr-Australia is moving forward with its expansion plans in a further $60 million investment in the City of Salisbury.

Work Begins on a New Civic Square Work on stage 1 of the redevelopment of the Salisbury City Centre Civic Square is scheduled to commence in October this year. It will be the first major piece of construction to take place as part of the regeneration of the City Centre.

The design of the Civic Square is based on feedback from the community and local traders, and it aims to create a new ‘heart’ for the city. It will provide a public setting that is playful in nature while reflecting the unique characteristics of Salisbury, its people, its past and its future.

The first stage will include more seating and shade as well as seasonal planting beds and use of colourful plants to enhance the experience of the space. Better lighting and layout will improve public safety, particularly in the evenings.

The $700,000 redevelopment, which has been partly funded by the Minister for Planning, is expected to be complete by December.

It will be a demonstration of Council’s vision for the future of the Salisbury City Centre, and its hoped that it will stimulate further private investment in the Centre.

One of the primary roles of Local Government is the maintenance and presentation of the local environment, including streets, pathways, verges, parks and public buildings.

Salisbury Council covers an area of 161 square kilometres, incorporates 32 suburbs, is home to thousands of kilometres of roads, pathways and walking trails, and over 130 parks and reserves. We certainly have our work cut out for us!

In addition to our ongoing program of maintenance, Council will be placing particular emphasis on these key areas in the coming year to improve the presentation of Salisbury, and make it an even better place to live, work and play.

New Footpath NetworkCouncil will be investing $800,000 in our footpath network to link previously unconnected sections of pathway and provide walkways and access ramps across the city for residents to enjoy.

Upgrades for Sports Clubs and FacilitiesOver $1 million has been earmarked for upgrades to Council owned sports club buildings and facilities to ensure local families have access to some of the best sporting facilities in the State.

Upgrades for Playgrounds and ReservesWe’ve allocated approximately $750,000 for upgrading playspaces and Council reserves across the city, including installation of extra shade structures, seating and lighting.

Irrigation of Council Reserves We will be connecting (or in some cases reconnecting) 39 neighbourhood reserves to irrigation over the next three years to keep them lush and green during the summer months.

Renewal of St Kilda Adventure Playground St Kilda Adventure Playground is 30 years old, and sadly it’s beginning to show signs of age.

We’re asking residents for their thoughts on what they’d like to see at St Kilda Adventure Playground as part of its half million dollar renewal.

Look out for special postcards at our community facilities or visit www.salisbury.sa.gov.au/stkplay to have your say.

Road Reseal and ReconstructionIn one of our largest investments, approximately $7 million will be spent on repairing and resealing our local road network.

Council also has a number of other ongoing schemes to help keep our streets clean and presentable.

Free E-Waste RecyclingElectronic waste (or e-waste), including televisions and computers, is growing three times faster than any other type of waste in Australia.

Community members who wish to get rid of old computers and televisions, along with other electrical waste including audio/video equipment, small household appliances, mobile phones, tools, toys, leisure equipment and home/office communication devices, etc. can visit the City of Salisbury’s Waste Transfer Station at Research Road, Pooraka.

Customers will be required to separate these items from general waste brought to the facility.

The correct recycling of electronic waste is important as it often contains substances that are hazardous to humans and the environment when handled or disposed of inappropriately.

Free Mobile Phone RecyclingCouncil has recently arranged for free recycling of mobile phones received at the Research Road Waste Transfer Station through the MobileMuster Product Stewardship program. The service will be provided at no cost to residents.

Visit www.salisbury.sa.gov.au/ewaste for further information.

Verge MowingCouncil provides a regular maintenance program to all verge areas in the City of Salisbury. Operating on a six-week cycle for residential roads and a five-week cycle for collector roads, the program runs from May to December each year, dependent on weather conditions.

Council’s contractors whipper snip, mow to a height of 75mm and blow off the driveways and footpaths as part of the work. At times, the grass will be wet and this may cause some material to stick to hard surfaces. However, efforts are made to stop this from occurring. Street sweepers remove any remaining green waste within 24 to 48 hours.

Due to the high risk of damage to vehicles, contractors will not work on the verge if a car is parked alongside the kerb and will not return until the following cycle.

Council encourages residents to cut their own verges to help enhance the streetscape presentation of the city. Alternatively, residents can develop or landscape the verge area in accordance with Council’s verge development guidelines, available at www.salisbury.sa.gov.au/vergedevelopment
