  • Focus MarketsAn essential part of Sulzer Pumps' suc-cess is our focus on a number of chosen markets. We design and manufacture our products to meet operators' spe-cific needs within these industries. This specialization has allowed us to build a deep understanding of the processes our pumps are used in, leading to more efficient and reliable products.

Common to all our segments is the value our customers place on the performance of their pumping systems. By choosing a Sulzer pump, our customers place us at the heart of their process.

Oil & GasCrude oil production and transportation are an essential part of the global energy mix. With production from older fields now running down as they become ever more depleted the discovery and devel-opment of new reserves is an urgent and ongoing process. These new reserves are often in challenging locations such as deep water or in remote and unde-veloped regions of the world. Producers demand ever higher pressures, flows and levels of reliability. World record breaking products coupled with our unique packaging and testing abilities makes Sulzer Pumps the number one choice for critical upstream pumping and transcontinental pipeline applications.

HPIRefining crude oil and the production of base chemicals convert natural re-sources into the wide range of fuels, chemicals and material products with-out which modern lifestyles would be impossible. As our understanding of the environmental impact of mankind’s activities has improved, new processes and environmental operating standards have been introduced. High tempera-ture, potentially hazardous liquids must

be pumped safely, reliably and efficiently. Sulzer Pumps has the most up-to-date range of ISO 13709 (API 610) process pumps on the market. Each range is designed to deliver class leading per-formance with the minimum impact on the environment through energy use, leakage and consumption of external services.

Pulp & PaperThe production of pulp and paper prod-ucts is intensive in its use of centrifugal pumps. The pumps need to operate in a wide range of demanding applications within the process and need specific so-lutions to a number of critical operating requirements. Abrasion and corrosion resistance, an ability to pump liquid with gas entrapped within it, the require-ment to eliminate external services, the need to minimize energy consumption and have interchangeable spare parts combine to challenge pump designers to provide economic products that fulfill their diverse needs. As market leader and with the successful introduction of the all new AHLSTAR range that takes pump performance to the next level, Sulzer Pumps is the choice of paper manufacturers worldwide.

    4

  • PowerModern electricity generating plants, be they fossil fuelled, nuclear or combined cycle, rely on pumps as a core part of the generating process. Boiler feed pumps, condensate extraction pumps and cool-ing water pumps are at the heart of the heat cycle most widely used for power generation. From industrial generating plants through to the latest generation of super critical power stations, Sulzer Pumps' technology is selected the world over, both by private and national power generating companies. Sulzer Pumps is also active in the equally important fields of FGD treatment plants and nu-clear safety systems. Another important field is the retrofitting of existing plants to increase life and performance while improving reliability. WaterA ready supply of clean water is one of the basic necessities of life. Supplying water to ever growing city populations or producing drinking water from the sea are both growing activities in response to population demands. With installations ranging from bulk water transportation supporting some of the largest cities in the world to ground breaking reverse

osmosis plants delivering large volumes of water at previously uneconomic price levels, Sulzer Pumps' technology makes these schemes possible. Pumping water demands the highest possible levels of efficiency; this exceptional performance must be maintained over extended periods of time as the bulk of the cost associated with water supply schemes comes from driving pumps. Specifically matching the pump hydraulics to system demands and the engineering knowl-edge associated with delivering long operating life are key to Sulzer Pumps' success in this challenging market.

General IndustryProcesses as diverse as metal produc-tion, sugar refining, fertilizer manufacture and ethanol refining all have a common link. They contain processes that are highly erosive, corrosive or have other particular demands that compromise the life and reliability of traditional process pumps. Sulzer Pumps' unique knowl-edge of these challenges gained over years of experience in manufacturing process pumps has led to the develop-ment of a modular range of pumps able to be configured to process operating demands. Hard wearing alloys, corrosion

resistant materials, unique sealing solu-tions and modular bearing assemblies allow operators to specify the right pump for each process while reducing spares and maintenance costs through the use of interchangeable sub assemblies. No matter how extreme the service, Sulzer Pumps has a process pump solution perfectly suited to meet the customers' requirements.

  • The Best Production and Test Facilities in the WorldWherever you are, Sulzer Pumps is close-by to bring the latest pumping technology to your unique process. We constantly seek to strengthen our manufacturing base by increasing the efficiency of all our facilities, including our foundry operations in Finland and Brazil. Examples include the use of global sup-ply partners to ensure both raw materials and factored items are supplied to the highest quality standards and invest-ment in state-of-the-art machine tools, packaging and test facilities. These con-tinuous improvements will benefit you as we develop an ever more advanced manufacturing philosophy. This work is at the heart of the value we give you.

New FacilitiesSulzer Pumps recently completed and successfully commissioned two com-pletely new manufacturing plants. Our existing facilities in Brazil and China had, for various reasons, reached their limit for development and expansion investments. The decision was made to move off the existing sites and build new plants in more favorable locations while still retaining the existing employees. This allowed us the dual benefits of custom designed pump factories staffed by our highly skilled workforce. This combina-tion meant the new plants were brought on stream with a minimum of disruption to work in progress.

InvestmentsAs well as building new facilities, Sulzer Pumps has also invested heavily in exist-ing locations. Examples include the com-plete re-configuration of our US plants in Portland and Houston. Using lean prin-ciples, the buildings and machine tool layouts were updated and arranged to optimize workflow. The result has been improved productivity and capacity at both locations. In Mexico, investments in machine tools and improvements in plant layout have increased capacity, particularly for products used in refinery applications. In the UK, a fourth test bed was installed at the Leeds plant and the main test bed upgraded with an inverter drive for variable speed motors of up to 15 MW.

Demand for products from our Indian factory resulted in investments to in-crease the factory size and improve productivity using lean principles. Active markets and improved manufacturing capacity put an increasing load on our engineering activities. Dedicated engi-neering centers have been established in the UK and India to support plant based engineering teams.

    6

  • The Best Production and Test Facilities in the WorldAs well as investment in the facilities themselves, the information systems used are also being upgraded. In North America, a project to migrate all manu-facturing plants to SAP has been suc-cessfully completed. We are currently repeating the exercise in Europe and the Middle East. This rolling project will result in harmonized systems across our manufacturing locations improving efficiency, speed of communication and management of the supply chain.

Manufacturing locations are only part of the story though, our global network of service centers has undergone lean assessment and update. The exercise has released substantial extra capacity and improved process efficiencies. The ongoing lean working practices and as-sessments mean improvements which are maintained and further advances will be made over time.

Test FacilitiesPump performance testing, be it for hydraulic assessment or full string test-ing to prove package integrity is a core strength of Sulzer Pumps. We operate a range of test beds around the world, each dedicated to the needs of specific products and markets.

In Finland, the test loop is set up to allow the rapid testing of end suction pumps of all sizes for the pulp and paper, food, metal and fertilizer industries. The high production volume for these segments demands a rapid set up/break down process. This is achieved with modular pump interface piping that can quickly be rotated into position using two cus-tom-built rotating assemblies holding the required range of suction and discharge pipe sizes.

At the other end of the scale, the UK test bed is able to accommodate gas turbine

driven pumps of up to 30 MW. The building is equipped with all the required systems to run gas turbines, large diesel engines and high voltage electric motors. There is sufficient space to allow several skids to be installed at once maximizing the facilities flexibility.

Specialist vertical pump test beds are located in Houston, France and South Africa. Testing for pumps installed in nuclear power plants can be accom-modated in Canada and our new plant in Brazil has the largest pump test facility in the Southern hemisphere.

Whatever the pump you purchase from Sulzer, we have the test capability to fully test it before shipping to prove performance and ensure problem free commissioning on site.

  • MC® Dischargeris designed for dividing and controlling high consistency stock flow and for dis-charging towers and bleaching reactors.

The Discharger operates so that the stock entering the chamber of the dis-charger is fluidized by the rotor. The out-lets are constructed directly to this same chamber. The discharger itself does not generate pressure, so an MCE™ pump is required in the pro cess to pump the stock through the discharger.

Chemical Mixeris a medium consistency (MC®) mixer for mixing both gaseous and liquid bleach-ing chemicals and also steam into paper stock.

The rotor of the mixer fluidizes the stock together with the casing turbulence gen-erators, thus disrupting the fiber network and resulting in the optimum mixing result. Perpendicular positioning of the rotor and the unique three dimensional turbulence zone prevent the separation of gas.

MC® Discharge Scraperoperates in connection with a medium consistency tower discharge pump. Maximum stock consistency in the tower is 25-30%.

The Discharge Scraper scrapes the stock over the complete bottom area of the tower and leads it into the feeding chute of the MCE™ pump, thus enabling an even discharge and simultaneously preventing channeling of the stock in the tower.

  • SALOMIX® ProductsSALOMIX® SL/STSL/ST agitators are side-mounted gear or belt driven propeller agitators specially designed for fibrous stocks in all process conditions. They are characterized by a low power need and high efficiency. By combining an adjustable four-bladed cast propeller with the conical body shape inside the tank, the stock flow to the propeller is streamlined. A rigid design makes these agitators reliable and provides extended operational life. The product range includes propeller diameters from 500 mm to 1,650 mm while the power range is from 11 kW up to 75 kW. These side-mounted agitators are mainly used in the pulp and paper industry.

SALOMIX® L SeriesThe L series covers gear or belt driven agitators mounted either vertically (on the tank top flange or through the tank bottom) or horizontally to the side wall flange of the reactor. The power range covers agitators with 0.5 kW up to 450 kW motors. Versatile impeller op-tions with single or multilevel paddles, propellers, turbines, dissolver discs, anchors etc. make it possible to control many different kinds of agitation opera-tions and process needs in compliance with the rheology of the mixed fluid.

SALOMIX® TES, GLI, VULCATES spreads the stock evenly on the top surface to control the flow in the upper medium or high consistency part of the tower reducing air entrainment into the stock and preventing stagnant zones in the tower. The quality of the discharged stock remains good.

GLI is a special center fillet located at the bottom of the tower. GLI enables trouble-free operation of medium and high consistency storage and bleach-ing towers with a large bottom zone using several agitators. GLI creates a well-controlled mixing/dilution zone at the bottom of the tower ensuring even discharge consistency and good opera-tion of the tower.

VULCA is another type of center fillet pillar also located at the bottom of the tower. The filling and pumping of stock is carried out through VULCA. VULCA helps to save pumping energy, boosts bottom zone mixing and prevents mixing of air into the stock.

TMS – Tower Management SystemSulzer Pumps TMS – Tower Manage-ment System is designed for improving the performance of any kind of tower, regardless of inlet or storage consist-ency, shape or size. The system can be utilized with straight towers such as high consistency bleaching and stor-age towers, reduced bottom medium consistency storage towers, blow tanks, low consistency broke towers and more. Tower Management System equipment covers SALOMIX® TES, GLI and VULCA.

  • Quality, Environment, Safety and Occupational HealthProduct Life CycleSulzer considers the total life cycle of its products to reduce cost as well as envi-ronmental impact. This includes the de-sign, manufacturing, marketing, packag-ing, transportation, operation, recycling, and disposal of the products. Similar considerations apply to the provision of services. To identify relevant influences on product life cycle efficiency, Sulzer has implemented a screening tool that focuses on energy consumption during production, material usage, and costs over simplified product life cycle. The tool generates “footprints”, showing costs, energy and material consumption, and environmental impact. It thereby helps

to identify room for improvement, e. g. through a reduction in material used or the energy consumed. The tool has been successfully tested for selected products and will be used continuously to assess relevant Sulzer products.

Sulzer PumpsReliability and availability of pumping systems and equipment depend on the quality of their design, technical com-petency and manufacture. To achieve these goals, a Quality Management System covering all operations is es-sential. This covers not only our internal operations but also our relationship with the customers. Our innovative products

and services create high life cycle value for our customers. We monitor our cus-tomer satisfaction in accordance with a planned procedure, and we utilize the feedback to improve our processes. In manufacturing operations Quality Assur-ance (QA) begins with contract review and continues throughout the process in a planned and controlled way. Our globally recognized Quality Management System complies with national and inter-national standards using ISO 9001:2000 as its basis. All our manufacturing loca-tions are certified in accordance with this international standard.
