We conducted this online survey across our core regions between 29th November 2017 and 22nd January 2018. The report is based on the findings from those respondents who completed the survey, Blue Skies recruitment data from 2017 and sector specific market insight from clients and our experienced Managing Consultants.

2018 Salary Survey2017 proved, as anticipated, to be another interesting year for recruitment. Demand for talent has remained strong across each of the markets we operate across; marketing, digital, PR, client services and creative. In a talent scarce market, candidate experience has become increasingly important. With businesses working harder than ever to retain key talent and counter-offers now commonplace, it’s essential to deliver an engaging and memorable recruitment experience for candidates and we’ll be working closely with our clients across 2018 to help them achieve this. Whilst salaries have and will always play a key role in enticing the best candidates, it’s the businesses presenting the very best overall opportunity and experience that will win the war for talent.

Key trends we expect to see across 2018 include the increased need for temporary or freelance workers. With the skills-shortage not expected to ease anytime soon, freelancers present an attractive solution to managing key projects or workloads. With GDPR on the horizon, businesses are having to radically reappraise their attitude and behaviour towards data management and it will remain a key focus for many of our clients across the first half of 2018 but is anticipated to ease as businesses quickly develop a deeper

understanding of the implications and learn how to practically address it. Finally, we look forward to supporting our clients as they look to embrace technological advancements, everything from AI and data to AR and image recognition. The digital landscape as we know it is constantly evolving, as are the skills and experience required by our clients, and we’ll be working hard to ensure we can fulfil not only our clients’ current staffing requirements, but also those of the future. 2017 was another phenomenally busy year within the client services space. The market, so far, has remained candidate driven yet salaries have remained comparable to those of last year. As before, the importance of softer benefits continues to be extremely prevalent and is a huge contributing factor for candidates considering their career options.

Strong client services candidates are highly sought after and are often securing multiple interviews and in many cases will receive more than one job offer. As a result of this agencies have had to expedite interview processes and are offering competitive salaries along with a generous benefits package. Opportunity for career progression and continued professional development has repeatedly been found to be one of the most important factors for candidates when comparing their options, as has the importance of the working environment and culture an agency offers. Clients who have offered candidates the chance to explore the office and meet potential future colleagues and senior team members as part of the interview process have often stood out and set themselves apart from their competitors.

We have seen a rise in the demand for candidates with a digital specialism, whether that be digital account managers, social media gurus or more technical SEO and PPC backgrounds.

This trend looks set to continue over coming months and years.

All in all it’s looking likely to be another busy year in client services recruitment!

The Freelance Creative market started out slightly unpredictable in 2017. With the hangover of Brexit and the uncertainty that it produced, we felt that many clients would look at taking freelancers on until realising the impact that it would have on their work. However, the first half of the year actually saw an uplift in permanent creative roles, especially on a middleweight level. Whilst our clients were still using freelancers, it took a good few months into the new year before they were using them in the same volume as the previous year and by April, all of our freelancers were in demand with clients getting back to business as usual.

The skill sets that were most demand for freelancers in 2017 were conceptually led creatives that could do a hybrid of art direction and design, followed closely by digital and UX designers and creative artworkers. It was a lean year for copywriters, whilst they were still being called upon, the length of assignments were shorter being mainly 3-5 days long rather than for a few weeks at a time. Whilst we can’t be certain of the reason for this, at least one client has said that they had been asking more of their account managers to write longer copy and using freelance support to come up with top line concepts, tag lines and digital banners.

2018 has started out slowly for freelancers. Clients are in the stages of being on the cusp of taking on big projects and campaigns from their clients, so we predict that freelancers by March will be kept very busy. The best ones may be often locked into long term freelance assignments so that clients can guarantee getting the top talent and having continuity for bigger projects. Thus our advice to clients is to look ahead at upcoming projects and book ahead with freelancers to ensure that they get the best out there in the market and to cover holiday periods well in advance as it seems that 2018 is set to be a busy year for freelance creatives overall.

Knowing exactly who would be a good fit for us, using blueskies saves me time. It isn’t just about the skills and experience an individual might have, for me it is more about the personality. They know what I am looking for, the process is always smooth and efficient and the agency has benefitted from a number of key appointments, which have helped us grow and improve our services.

Sue Bailey | Managing DirectorGough Bailey Wright

One of our agencies of choice when we are looking to recruit, blueskies are extremely personable and friendly; they understand the Bright culture and what we look for in candidates, therefore we always get excellent new recruits who are exactly whay we need.

Bright Consultancy

We have worked with blueskies to assist with our recruitment for a number of years now, across Creative, PR and Account Handling, for both freelance and permanent vacancies. They understand our business, the challenges we face and the kind of candidates that we need to grow. They work hard to find us the very best talent on the market when we are (and even when we aren’t) recruiting. Our two most recent recruits via blueskies have been exceptional additions to our team and I can’t recommend them and their service highly enough.
