Goals

Strategy
o Encourage local parents to send children to
Sakshar
o Regular interaction between parents and
teachers/founder
o Recruit local teachers who have completed
high school education
o Split children into two groups – NFE 1 and NFE
2 based on age and skill level
Strategy
o NFE 1 focuses on grade levels 1-3 including
basic reading, writing and math
o NFE 2 focuses on grade levels 4-5 including
literature and more advanced math
o Detailed record is kept of student progress
o Regular evaluation to see if student is
mentally prepared to join formal school
Strategy
o Target children under 10 years who have never been
to school, drop outs and recent migrants
o Attempt to place students in formal school at grade
level appropriate for their age within 6 months
o Provide crèche for younger siblings
o Remedial evening courses for students who have
graduated
o Nutritious mid day meals
o Health check ups, de-worming, vaccination

o Skill level of many students at par for their age
o School hours are 9a-1p including lunch. Remedial from 2p-5p
o Founder and teachers are involved and well known in the area. Regular interaction with Parents
o Good tracking of students by teachers
o Students happy with the healthy meals
o Many parents are construction workers or unskilled labor – would not be able to send older siblings to Sakshar without the crèche.
