SAIS NEWSLETTER No. 3

November 2011

Dear Parents and Students, As November draws to its end, the soothing spirit of autumn fills the air, alleviating some of the summer heat that carried on through September and October. The air is filled with a more joyous spirit, the spirit of celebration in anticipation of the 40th anniversary of the birth of the blessed union of seven Arab Emirates. The amazing story of this union has become an inspiration to many people worldwide. This occasion offers many glorious memories and important lessons. One of those lessons is that in the face of enormous hardship and humongous obstacles, the will and determination of honest people will always prevail. And with dedication and faith, major accomplishments can be made. Our students are encouraged to learn from this lesson. When you feel things around you are going bad and that you have hit rock bottom, then it is time to pull your sleeves up and double your efforts; from the bottom there is only one way to go – up! In the spirit of the 40th UAE National Day, the school is abuzz with energy and a joyous spirit is felt everywhere. The school will be celebrating this occasion on Wednesday, November 30th. A plan of the celebration will be sent separately a few days before the event. On behalf of the owners of our school, our administration, and our faculty and staff, I would like to congratulate the people and the leadership of the UAE on this occasion. The story of the union is an inspiration to us all. The accomplishments of this young nation are felt at home and afar.

As we prepare for celebrating the National Day, our students should also be preparing for the end of term exams. Some of these exams will begin on Sunday, November 27th. A detailed exam schedule has already been given to our students. A copy of the exam

schedule was also sent to all of our esteemed parents through their accounts on the SAIS portal. We advise our students, as well as the parents, to create their own study schedule, allocating appropriate time for each subject. Advice on how to prepare well for exams is given later in this newsletter. PTA As part of our efforts to improve the school environment and communication within the school community, we are now in the process of forming a Parent-Teacher Association (PTA). An invitation to join the PTA has been sent to all our parents with their children. An electronic copy was sent to all the parents through our school portal. Parents interested in joining the PTA are requested to fill their information on the letter and return it to Mrs. Carole Abboud (MS Coordinator) or Mr. Toufic Khachab (HS Coordinator). Be mindful that not all the parents who apply will be allowed to join the PTA, as the number of members in this initial stage will be small. As the PTA matures, more parents will be invited to join. Reception Area As you all know by now, the doors in the reception area, leading to the school elementary and middle school sections are being closed everyday from 8:30 am till the end of the school day at 3:15 pm. This action has been taken to prevent people who do not belong to the school community from wandering into the school; and to ensure that no disruption to teaching happens as a small number of parents are in the habit of interrupting classes to talk to teachers or to their own children. I would like to assure you all that the positive effects of this new arrangement has already been felt. Interruption of teaching has now decreased greatly, and student safety has been boosted. I would like to thank SAIS parents for their cooperation and patience on this matter.

Student Pick-up I would like to thank all SAIS parents for your cooperation on this topic. Using the school side doors at 1:20 pm for pick-up of K-4 students is going smoothly. The new arrangement has limited interruption of teaching in G 5-12 classes. Also, congestion in the school

reception area has lessened, allowing us more opportunities to further work to provide better services to our students. Pride and Joy Following are the names of some of our outstanding students who either topped their classes or succeeded in joining the Honor Roll. Those students, along with many others, are a source of our pride and joy, and I am sure that their parents feel likewise. I would like to congratulate them for their accomplishments, and I would like to encourage all of our students to aspire to join their ranks.

Saeed Mohamed Butti Binbutti Almheiri 11D 3rd 87.45 From the desk of Wing A Coordinator (Grades 1 - 4), Ms. Deborah Anne Mustafa Asalaam alaikum dear parents,

Isn’t it amazing how time flies?! So many things are happening at school that we would like you to be aware of. First, grade 4 exams begin November 28th - December 14th.

Your child should have received a schedule with the appointed days for each subject area exam. There will be early dismissal on December 5th and 6th. The students will leave at 1:00 pm. Arrival time in the morning is the same at 7:45 am. If any student arrives after 8:40 am, he or she will be sent home and receive a ‘0’ for their exam. Make sure your children are well rested and have plenty of nourishing breakfast in the morning to ensure that they are fresh and ready to succeed.

Second, in teaching the students about the care of their “environment”, we will host an assembly in the gym for all grade 1-4 students on November 28th. The Sharjah Water Authority will give the students an entertaining and educational presentation on water conservation, specifically talking about ice. Below are some

links to teaching your kids about the importance of water in our lives. http://www.wateruseitwisely.com/kids/

Third, we are so excited for the upcoming UAE National Day! This holiday will be celebrated at school on Wednesday, November 30th. Students and parents will have the opportunity to learn about the cultural traditions of the UAE. If you would like

to help your child’s classroom teacher make this day extra special, kindly inform either me or the teacher, and we would be delighted to have your participation. This is a “free dress” day, and the children are not required to wear uniforms; they may wear their National Dress or any dress of their choosing. There will be an early dismissal on this day.

Lastly, we are collecting many lost items on a daily basis and we do not know who the rightful owners are because most of the items are not labeled with names. Please remember to label your children’s bags, lunch boxes and jackets with their names and class number. Next to my office you will find a box holding the Lost and

Found, there are two others, one on the first floor and the second in the gym. Please remember to have a look and claim your child’s lost treasures before we go on our winter break starting December 16th.

I am looking forward to meeting many of you on our UAE National Day celebration. I am always happy to answer any questions you may have about your child’s schooling. Please feel free to stop by my office and say hello. With warm regards, Deborah

From the desk of Wing B Coordinator (Grades 5- 8 Girls), Ms. Carole Abboud Important skills to be taught to children and adolescents:

Time management is one of the most important lifelong skills you should to instill in your children since early age. As the term exams are coming up

soon, parents are encouraged to allocate some time in the afternoon for their children to review for the exams. Generally, it’s best to let kids have a break after school before settling into doing more “school work.” Allow some “downtime” for active play, a healthy

snack, and time to visit with friends or mom and dad. Discourage video games and television, as children need to be active, not passive, after school. Additionally, excessive television viewing among children has been linked to a greater risk of obesity and violent behavior. Having a TV in the bedroom has been linked to lower scores on math, language, and reading tests. Another fundamental skill to teach to students is reading. Paying attention to your child’s reading interests can help you encourage more leisure reading, the best way to improve reading skills! Parents can help encourage their children to develop a love of reading by:

• Establishing a bookshelf corner somewhere in your home and stocking it with books your children choose.

• Encouraging them to write stories and share the stories by reading them to other family members.

• Being positive about their creative efforts – even when the story may be about a topic you wouldn’t choose.

• Encouraging relatives and family friends whom your children love and admire to give books as presents.

Housekeeping News:

I would like to congratulate the middle school girls for their consistent efforts in keeping their classrooms and the playground clean. Grades 6AA, 7A, 7AA, and 8AA won the monthly cleanliness competition.

Another competition will be held as well at the end of November to choose the best decorated bulletin board as a part of the National Day Celebrations. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all UAE citizens and expatriates on the 40th National Day. My best wishes to a country that is home to more than a 100 nationalities, a country that welcomes people from all cultures and communities. May God bless the UAE with prosperity and peace!

From the desk of Wing C Coordinator (Grades 9- 1 2 Boys), Mr. Toufic Khachab Term 1 exams will take place between the following dates 7th to 15th December.

Students will be given revision sheets to guide them in their study. I encourage students to set their own study goals and schedule making sure that they have the time needed for each subject. Students need to work harder and put more effort when they are studying at home.

SAIS will be celebrating the National Day on Wednesday, November 30. During the celebration, students will enjoy some events including traditional poetry, local dancing (razfa and yola), and some of the country’s traditional dishes. All students are invited to join in to make the event memorable

I would like to stress on the importance of the following:

Attendance

We would like to remind our students with the school policy on absence, which conforms with the Rules & Regulations of the Ministry of Education, “missing more than 20 school days during the school year may prevent a student from being promoted to the next grade”. Also, according to the

school Behavioral Point System, for every absence, without a valid excuse provided by the parents to the school, the student will lose one point. All students are expected to arrive on time and attend all classes. Please make plans to improve your child’s attendance this school year.

School Uniform

Please make sure that your son comes to school in proper school uniform, with the school logo. For every uniform violation, the student will lose one point, according to the Behavioral Point System.

Mobile Phones

Students are not allowed to bring mobile phones to the school under any pretext or for whatever excuse. Students who do not comply with this regulation subject themselves to the confiscation of their phones till the end of the academic year.

KEEP OUR SCHOOL CLEAN

We are proud of our students in the High School who are assisting in keeping our school clean by cleaning the playground at the end of each break. Our aim is to STOP LITTERING in school playgrounds and to ensure a clean and healthy environment for our students. We are hoping that you would talk to

your children about the importance of contributing positively to this initiative and to always adopt good practices towards their school environment. From the desk of Wing D Coordinator (Grades 5- 8 Boys), Mr. Kassem Zayour Dear Parents & Students, I would like o congratulate you all on the 40th Eid Al Ittihad hoping that this year will be prosperous and merry for all of us.

As we are approaching the end of the term, exams will be taking place in the coming week(s), to complete the assessment of student performance in the first term. Good time management is a very important tool to ensure that students catch up with work and to perform successfully. It is important that students are well-rested, eat a good breakfast and are in timely attendance during the days of the testing.

I wish you all good luck and good achievement for the coming period.

From the desk of Wing E Coordinator (Grades 9- 1 2 Girls) and Career Guidance Counselor, Ms. Noha Naamani University Visits NDU University (Notre Dame University at Louaizé), Lebanon, will be visiting SAIS on November 23rd to meet with a number of interested students. Studies have shown that most high school students and their parents are confused while choosing the ‘right’ higher education courses. The uncertainty is multiplied by the fact that over 30% of the first year university students either drop out, as they cannot meet the demands of the course, or change their course in the second year because they simply did not like it. This confusion is somewhat justified by a number of reasons:

• For the students, their career choice is probably the single biggest decision that they have had to make in their life so far.

• The ever changing labor market conditions have made the choices unlimited. • There is information overload with university courses. • The financial implications of the final decision are usually not fully understood by

high school students. Students will have greater confidence in making career decisions if they:

• Have a better understanding of their interests, values and personality, and • Have realistic knowledge of their abilities and aptitudes.

In order to provide students with a suitable career direction, students are advise to receive professional assistance. One important advising tool is internationally recognised Psychometric Assessment, administered face to face. These tests start by assessing a student’s interests, values and personality. This enables the testers to gain an understanding of the type of work tasks, industries and work environment that best suit the individual. These tests also assess the student’s abilities, verbal and numerical, to identify their strengths and weaknesses. One can then identify the careers and courses they are most likely to enjoy, and give them an action plan to help them on the path to a fulfilling career. Following is a brief description of some of these assessment tools. Aptitude Assessment – (Intelligence) Recommended for Grade 9 to 12

Page 20: SAIS NEWSLETTER No. 3 November 2011 - saisuae.com · SAIS NEWSLETTER No. 3. November 2011 . ... Shaima Mohamad Haji Al Najjar, ... Sereen Al-Hamadi, Mary Anwar Al Nassr Alha, Mayed

Over 60 years of accumulated evidence supports the power of ability tests in predicting occupational and academic outcomes. The Aptitude Tests assess a person's ability to think logically using words, numbers and abstract concepts. They assess the ability to both understand and develop logical arguments and solve complex logical problems. Aptitude assessment will provide a realistic overview of the strengths and weaknesses of the students, which will help them and their parents to choose the right subjects in grade 11 & 12, and the right university course once they have graduated from school.

The test assesses eight vocational interests and five personal work needs. The vocational interests identify work areas which an individual is likely to enjoy whereas the work needs asses how well suited they are to different environments. The assessment also entails a detailed analysis of how an individual will characteristically perform or behave in three occupationally relevant aspects: Interacting with others (Interpersonal style), approaches to problem solving and information handling (thinking style), and patterns of coping with work pressures (coping style). The assessment will clearly identify 2-3 career options for the student. One can also understand more about the university training requirements, certifications as well as job outlook and expected salary once the student enters the workforce. N.B: Please contact the school for more information about these tests.

From the desk of Wing F Coordinator (KG1 & KG2), Ms. Dionne Zantua

We hope that everyone had a wonderful time spent with family & friends during the Eid holidays. We are wrapping up Term 1 as our last day will be on December 15th. Term 2 will commence immediately after our winter vacation on January 8th.

Occupational Preferences – Assessment of Personality, Work Preferences and Values Recommended for Grade 11/12 students: The test is designed to provide a comprehensive and fully integrated assessment for career guidance and development. The test consists of an occupational interest questionnaire and a measure of personal work needs – personality.
