Confidence in AVEVA Engineering to serve as a platform for innovation

Improved accountability

Enhanced confidence in data quality

The creation of a robust and reliable data trail is critical in complex projects. If team members are not sharing one single version of the truth then the likelihood of duplication increases, because assumptions tend to be made.

One team assumes another will pick up on a specific aspect, or that they have already done so. Users assume data has been changed, when it has not; or they assume it has not, when it has. Without a unified view teams cannot collaborate on a master design, one where all who make a contribution can see all the contributions being made. With incorrect assumptions in the early stages, a project can be at risk of budget and schedule overruns.

Another way of looking at it is that, while the design is being created, errors can occur resulting in stress points that will create customer dissatisfaction.

Challenges: clarity of information accuracy, history and reliability at every design stage for every userWith over 36,000 employees spread across 60 countries, Saipem is a major global EPC contractor in the onshore and offshore oil & gas industries. The company was embarking on a major new project and Saipem recognised the opportunity to introduce a tool that could deliver better control over the Engineering & Design process.

The latest project Saipem were faced with was a complete development of a natural gas field. The complex project included a number of wellheald platforms and integrated onshore and offshore pipelines.

The complexity of this project demanded a reassessment of certain engineering tools and data-management strategies in use at Saipem. In areas such as line lists, for example, individual users, mostly working in Excel, each had their own line lists, with no sharing between users.

‘We needed a solution that was very flexible, easy to use, smarter and data-centric,’ commented Stefano Cartocci, Offshore Information and Communication Technologies Italy Coordinator at Saipem. ‘It also had to offer easy adoption for users who were accustomed to working in Excel.’

The Saipem team evaluated AVEVA Engineering with a Proof of Concept to make sure that any team member could grasp it. The transition from Excel to AVEVA Engineering was fast and easy. Once everybody had mastered the basics through the trial period, we were quickly able to expand it to live projects and start generating multiple deliverables,’ he explains.

Solutions: creation of electrical, auxiliary and line lists accelerated by 40% Saipem deployed AVEVA Engineering to replace the lists previously held in Excel, including electrical load lists, auxiliary lists and line lists. In future the lists will be connected to a 3D model as well as a datasheet for electrical equipment items. Deliverables are created at the FEED phase and then passed across to other teams working on the project.

The company estimates that time savings are around 40% and, ‘…more importantly,’ according to Cartocci, that ‘… confidence in the data produced is now 100%.’

As a result of having higher-quality data and information, Saipem’s teams are now aware of the value of the platform for driving innovation. The company has gained a clear ‘mind-set change’ among its Engineering & Design teams.

Looking to the future, Cartocci expects even more integration of AVEVA Engineering into the data-management framework. ‘So, for example, AVEVA Engineering will become the connector between the Saipem Common Data Environment, 3D Model and calculation tools. In addition, we see an increasing demand in Northern Europe to use the AVEVA Suite. So we are investigating and testing AVEVA Everything 3D™, AVEVA NET™ and AVEVA Diagrams™ in addition to AVEVA PDMS™ which we already use.’
