SS PETER & PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH, HOPKINSVILLE, KY 4

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Some thoughts from the Scripture Readings this weekend may include:

In the Gospel, Jesus invites us to take his yoke upon our own shoulders and work with him to bring God’s love into our world. In the Eucharist, we renew our commit-ment to live in his way and God gives us the gift of joy in our simple service to “Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord.”

Jesus revealed that God is not far off from us; God is very much with us all of the time. We need to learn how we can see and know God’s presence with us. What can you do to help you see God working in and through your life?

Each of us needs help at times in our lives. Jesus assures us that he will help us if we turn to him when life is hard. Are you willing to humble yourself and ask God for help?

CORRECTION—Military: We congratulate Joseph Ngu-yen, son of Khanh Nguyen and Kim Dang Nguyet who left on Monday, June 22nd as he headed to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. Joseph begins his basic training for the Army Reserves and will remain at Ft. Leavenworth till November. In November he will attend the University of Louisville where he will be studying Computer Science. Let us keep Joseph in our prayers as he be-ings a new journey in his life. Joseph is 2020 graduate from Hopkinsville High School and a 2016 graduate of Saints Peter and Paul School.

Enlightened Perspective

I’ve learned…That the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.

I’ve learned…That just one person saying to me, ‘You’ve made my day!’ makes my day.

I’ve learned…That having a child fall asleep in my arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.

I’ve learned…That being kind is more important than being right.

I’ve learned…That I can always pray for someone when I don’t have the strength to help in some other way.

I’ve learned…That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.

I’ve learned…That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and heart to understand.

I’ve learned…That life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

I’ve learned…That we should be glad God doesn’t give us everything we ask for.

I’ve learned…That money doesn’t buy class.

I’ve learned…That it’s those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.

I’ve learned…That under everyone’s hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.

I’ve learned…That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.

I’ve learned…That life is tough, but I’m tougher.

I’ve learned…That when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

I’ve learned…That I wish I could have told my Mom that I loved her one more time before she passed away.

I’ve learned…That a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

I’ve learned… That when your newborn grandchild holds your little finger in his little fist, that you’re hooked for life.

And I’m still learning. WELCOME VISITORS: If you are visiting Saints Peter and Paul for the first time today, we would like to say WELCOME! Maybe you’re back again for a return look. Maybe you’ve been away for awhile? Either way we would like for you to feel at home here at Saints Peter and Paul. Please call the parish office if you have any questions or would like to join the parish. We would love to help! (270) 885-8522.

JULY 5, 2020 • FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 7

Pastor’s Greeting,

VIOLENCE AND WRATH Since shortly after ordination (1978) I have from time to time won-dered about the accumulation of conse-quences in our society and throughout the

world which follow from the grave evil of our killing millions of innocent human beings, the unborn and other very vulner-able people. That is in addition to the other taking of hu-man life by war, regional conflicts, genocide, terrorism, and other criminal homicides. The degradation of human beings by trafficing, exploitation, and other denials of basic human rights and dignity—all of these things add to the burden of violence being suffered by humanity. The violence of these days powerfully reasserts the question in my mind. What effects do all of these violations of the human being have upon humanity? The thought suggests itself to me that, more than just a coarsening of cultures, there is an accumulating burden of diffused wrath. It brings to my mind biblical ref-erences to the “wrath of God.” But the biblical term does not seem to mean a limit to God’s patience or forbearance, but thresholds at which human wickedness explodes into ghastly violence. I do not understand God to be vindictive or to be wait-ing until humanity reaches a tipping point of evil before triggering divine retribution. Quite the contrary, God miti-gates the evil consequences of human sin, the “wages” of which is death. Within humanity, however, the choice of evil so upsets the conscience, so disturbs the social fabric, so in-jures the family and the common good of society, that the effects may be described as sowing wrath on earth. God designed us for the good, so that we ourselves might, in re-ceiving and sharing the goodness of his gift of love, grow as gifts of loving goodness in the divine likeness. Wherever and whenever this truth is offended, injured, or denied by human evil, then anger, rage, and wrath are generated. If you will, it is the devil’s own plot to weaponize human rage and wrath within and among us to deadly, destructive ef-fects. It is an horrific scheme, prompting fallen humanity to return evil for evil, corrupting the innocent, and reaping an exponentially multiplied harvest of death and destruction. God’s shield and countermeasure to interdict and to defuse the wrathful rush to destruction is the Cross of Jesus Christ. By taking upon himself the sins of the world and the death of its consequences, Jesus Christ absorbs the evil-generated wrath of human history. The death and destruc-tion of sin are nullified (not erased from our history) and completely overwhelmed by Christ’s resurrection and the new creation (a history of redemption thereby being writ-ten). The Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the incar-nate Son of God, manifest God’s judgment on this world—God’s absolute rejection of any victory or future for evil and the overwhelming victory of God’s own life and love for us. During the march of time, however, we are stunned by the enormity, insanity, perversity, and abomination of the evil of which we humans are capable, even without consid-

ering the preternatural horror of the demonic prodding which urges us to sin. Some of the evil we commit is out of foolish ignorance, some of it deliberately cold hearted and wicked. Even otherwise morally virtuous people can be ter-ribly tempted to counter evil with evil, to fight fire with fire, to give the wicked a taste of their own medicine. Jesus, however, prohibits this. Evil may never be done so that good might follow. A good purpose never justifies an evil means to accomplish it. Even in a justifiable use of force to repel an unjust attack, the force must be measured, propor-tionate to the attack, and reasonably calculated to succeed with the least harm done to all. While a lethal force may be at times necessary, it may only be used as a last resort to turn back a lethal aggression upon itself. And, while one may virtuously hate moral evil, one may never hate one’s enemy, only the enemy’s evil pursuit. Similarly, we must hate our own evil and sins, but may not hate ourselves. So, Christians direct the evil which comes at them to the Cross and stand with Jesus Christ at his cross during the trials and tribulations of this world. We cannot surrender to the temp-tation to respond to evil with evil, thereby becoming the very evil which we detest and abhor. By facing human wrath and the evil which generates it with the Cross of Jesus Christ we can shield ourselves from its venom and even de-fuse or dampen its rampant march to destruction. If stand-ing with Jesus Christ we should be mowed down by the hate-filled violence of this world, we can be assured of victory in the light of the Lord’s resurrection. The battle for the soul of this world rages on, but the peace of Christ abides with those who abide with him. Fr. Richard
